i really like reggae, but i am having difficulty expanding my musical portfolio in that department.

i really like roots reggae, especially old mono recordings. i really hate anything dub or dancehall.

i listen to toots and the maytalls, burning spear, peter tosh, bob (especially the earlier stuff). i also like old-school ska stuff like the skatellites.

any listening suggestions that are similar to what i've listed here are greatly appreciated!

Desmond Dekker is pretty foolproof. There are a bunch of Trojan Ska and Reggae box sets that can be downloaded pretty readily.

Did you make this thread for me?
THIS IS MY AREA!!!!

:)

If you don't like dub, the mono stuff gets tough. As most producers only made a single recording of most groups and then stretched it into 21941239048913048 different versions. (mostly dub ones)

Try:

the Heptones, Steel Pulse (earth crisis is a great summer record), Alton Ellis, Prince Buster.....

Good places to start.

Pick up this book:trojan records story (http://www.amazon.com/Young-Gifted-Black-Trojan-Records/dp/1860744648/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241095781&sr=8-1)

Comes with a CD and a great back history.

Try these acts out for some new flavor:

Cedric Im Brooks & Light of Saba
The Meditations
The Upsetters
Dr. Alimantado
The Congos

What about Dub turns you off? You're missing out on King Tubby and Lee Perry - two of the finest men involved in the scene.

thanks for all of the tips everyone. a lot of this stuff is great. i actually don't mind king tubby and lee perry, from what i have heard from them. i guess that dislike was a strong choice of words...it's not my preference. if anyone has some good dub suggestions i'm more than willing to give them a try.

i might also have the genre wrong...i just really don't like songs with long, drawn out periods of time where it is just an echoey drum riff, with splashes of super reverberated guitar chucks and incomprehensible shoutingesque lyrics.

Culture
Aswad
Garnett Silk
Luciano(sweep over my soul especially)

If you are interested in newer stuff that drew inspiration from those artists you named tell me and I'll give you more.

Dekker is one of my absolute favorites.
There is a great podcast available on itunes (for free) called Sounds of the Caribbean. They do everything. It's a great way to explore the genre.

I would never have guessed in my life that on RF.net i could find another capleton or bounty fan.

Hmmm wonder what a certain host would think about their music.

Also might be helpful to know that WFMU 91.1 in NJ has a Reggae show on sunday mornings called Reggae Schoolroom with Jeff Sarge. It airs from 9am to noon on 91.1fm and can be streamed worldwide on the world wide web at WFMU.ORG (I stream it for the sake of the signal which fades if it gets too cloudy).

Lots of stuff you might otherwise be unfamiliar with - and sometimes it's just nice not to have to be the DJ in your own house.
