Well, we finally have a name and release date for the new album from the greatest, hardest working band in America: WILCO

It's titled Wilco (the album) and it will be released on Nonesuch on Tuesday, June 30th.

Here's the official listing for all 11 tracks:
Wilco (the song)
Deeper Down
One Wing
Bull Black Nova
You And I
You Never Know
Country Disappeared
Solitaire
I'll Fight
Sonny Feeling
Everlasting Everything

Some facts I found on their message board:

* There's a song called Dark Neon that appeared and disappeared from the Wilcoworld tracklisting, and will likely be an extra track or B-side or something of that sort (perhaps like Let's Not Get Carried Away?)

* Besides Rolling Stone, some people heard the album at the start of the month at one of the private charity shows Jeff does. This was discussed in After the Show.

* Per the David Fricke interview with John at Jazzfest (secondhand for me; I think it was reported either in the other thread or the Jazzfest ATS thread), the duet with Feist was supposed to be a big secret until the album came out. That news broke a long time ago, though.

* John also indicated in the aforementioned interview (again, secondhand for me but reported elsewhere) that the album's title came about in part because the artwork didn't come together quickly, and they somehow fit together.

* Photo shoots in Milwaukee for possible album artwork (there were no guarantees that this will appear in the final product) included fans in line outside the Pabst Theater, including a few fans chosen to wear three of the band's Nudie suits. There was also a prop birthday cake.

* Nonesuch has the album page up, but no cover art or samples yet: http://www.nonesuch.com/albums/wilco-the-album

Some of the tracks can be downloaded in live version here (https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=batch_download&batch_id=dVlwOU1kNEhTSUJMWEE9PQ). So far, I love 'You Never Know'. Can't wait for the album version.

So put all things about the album (expectations, reviews, etc.) here.

On a random Wilco-tangent, I'm part of a local musical history research project for one of my classes and I've been able to get in contact with two of the three owners of Lounge Ax, but I did not know that the third, Sue Miller, is also Sue Tweedy.

I seriously doubt I'll be able to get in touch with her for an interview.

Thanks a lot, Jeff.

Love the song on the site, but it's just setting me up for an even bigger let down when the album likely just furthers Tweedy's mad quest into bland, soft rock adult contemporary.

COME BACK, JEFF. Just grab a fistfull of pills, just this once. Stop having a boner for shitty, noodly, wussy guitar solos and come back to us. You already made an Eagles record, and we were all sad. Please don't do it again. The next time you won't even be the Eagles. You'll be America. Then it's just a short tumble to Bread-ville. It's not too late to turn back.

Another album with Billy Bragg might be what the doctor ordered.

Honestly, did anyone here like most of SBS? I'm not saying it was awful, because it definitely has a few strong songs, but overall...meh. So bland. It's basically background music.

It's just a progression. Just another sound that they change on every album. Is it my favorite, no but it does have a couple of my favorite songs by them on it.

And it actually got a few people I know into the band because it is softer and more accessible than say, A Ghost is Born.

Which was just a softer and wankier version of YHF.

Just because something is different doesn't make it a progression. Different can also mean a regression. Wilco might just be one of those bands where they real fires burned out after a few albums. They can still make pleasant music, but the spark might be gone.

I don't think you can say the fire burned out. Just because they make less complex music. Their musicianship and how hard they tour shows me how much they love music and have so much more to share with their audience.

I don't want complex. They never were a complex band. There's just something missing when I've heard the last couple of albums. I don't think it's coincidence that the albums since Tweedy took total control of the band and cleaned up have sounded so much more "flat" and bland and same-y. Again, it's not like they're making BAD albums, but it just sounds to me like they're going through the motions and jus doing whatever Jeff wants to do. It's like Prozac music now...now highs, no lows. Just the same middle all the time.

I have seen them live many times. I want the Wilco back that ripped it up live AND dropped it like it was hot on the albums.

Power pop and twang, two great tastes that they deliciously blended...now both are all but gone.

I don't necessarily disagree with this analysis, but I also don't believe there's a big difference in quality between the top and bottom selections.

It's not like, say, the Stones, with Exile on top and Dirty Work at the bottom.

Definitely not. Like I said, as much as I found the last two albums to be let downs, we're talking relatively speaking here with a band with some stellar output. Even their "worst" albums have songs I really like.

i've seen them live a buch of times, and the last time really turned me off a bit (and it's been almost six years since i've seen them)

they were opening for R.E.M at red rocks, and jeff had to have a new guitar for each and every song ... if there's a fixed time for you to play, why not just play as much as you can ...? peter buck played two hours with such nonsense

i blame jim o'rourke and the rest of those sonic youth folks for corrupting jeff ... and nels cline isn't helping matters

the last two album were eh, and i have high hopes for the new one ... and from what i've heard, i really regret not seeing them in greenpoint

but it'll be hard to pass up a twin bill of yo la tengo and wilco by the sea ... with mermaid avenue being a few blocks away, i wonder how much will be played

Well, there are some songs that detractors of the last two albums are going to hate. But there are also a few songs that at least melodically are reminiscent of Summerteeth.

Since we know you're curious and probably have better things to do than scour the internet for a download (though we do understand the attraction of the illicit), we've posted a stream of the full album at http://wilcoworld.net/records/thealbum/ . Feel free to refer to it as "wilco (the stream)" if you must.

We also have our usual guilt abatement plan for downloaders. If you have downloaded the record, we suggest you make a donation to one of the band's favorite charities, the Inspiration Corporation -- an organization we've supported in the past & who are doing great work in the city of Chicago. Information and donation button here: http://inspirationcorp.org/. (http://inspirationcorp.org/)

That's all. Enjoy the stream. Tickets for summer shows, etc. http://wilcoworld.net/tours/ Note that we'll be holding a free online midnight screening of the "Ashes of American Flags" film this Friday night (at both midnight US Central time and again at midnight Pacific). So get the popcorn or whatever together and be sure to log on and tune in on Friday.

What I like about what I'm hearing of it so far (and I'm just working my way through it for the first time) is that it seems to take in the experimentation of YHF and A Ghost is Born without going overboard with it, like those two albums could (seriously, Jeff, ten minutes of white noise?) They've really seemed to have learned how to bring everything together now. It's good.

It's a nice healthy mix of that stuff and the really poppy stuff like Summerteeth.

gave it a listen to, and a big 'eh' overall

really liked "you and i," nice to hear the twang back ... "deeper down," "one wing," "i'll fight," and "sunny feeling" weren't too bad

"bull black nova" was dreadful ... i've become tired of the loose fur repetitious notes/hooks (jim o'rourke's insignificance is brilliant -- that song isn't), and i can see it being dragged out needlessly into a ten minute jam

"wilco the song" was nice, a bit silly (i wonder how it'll hold up), and "country disappeared" lost me as soon as jeff's new falsetto schtick kicked in

overall not too impressed or wowed ... propabably the weakest of the post YHF records

I was pretty indifferent my first time through. I've decided to let it sit on the shelf a bit until I'm jonzing for some Tweedy. They've never disappointed me before, so I don't expect this to be any different.

DeRogatis comments:

http://blogs.suntimes.com/derogatis/2009/05/jay_bennett_dead_at_age_45.html

Jay Bennett, a rock musician with deep ties to Chicago best known as a former member of Wilco, died early Sunday morning in downstate Urbana, where he had been running a recording studio, according to a spokesman for his family.

The singer and multi-instrumentalist was 45 years old.

"Early this morning, Jay died in his sleep and an autopsy is being performed," said Edward Burch, a friend and musician who collaborated with Bennett on the 2005 album "The Palace at 4 a.m." "The family is in mourning and is unavailable for comment at this time."

Born in the Chicago suburb of Rolling Meadows, Bennett began playing in bands as a teenager. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned multiple degrees in secondary education, math and political science. In between, he co-founded the Replacements-like power-pop band Titanic Love Affair, which released three albums during the alternative-rock heyday between 1991 and 1996, when it was dropped from its label.

Bennett was working at a VCR repair shop in Champaign when he was tapped to join Wilco as it toured in support of its first album, "A.M." A talented arranger and versatile musician who could play virtually any instrument he picked up, from mandolin to Mellotron, Bennett formed a fruitful partnership with Wilco bandleader Jeff Tweedy. His contributions over a seven-year period were key to the albums that resulted in the band's national breakthrough, including "Being There" (1996), "Summerteeth" (1999) and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" (2002).

Relations between Bennett and Tweedy, both painstaking perfectionists, soured during the latter recording, as documented in the film "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," and Bennett left the band. Earlier this month, Bennett filed a lawsuit against Tweedy for breach of contract and unpaid artist's royalties, stemming in part from his role in the film.

In late April, Bennett wrote on his MySpace blog about dealing with intense pain from a hip injury suffered during a dive from the stage while playing with Titanic Love Affair. He was preparing to have surgery, but was concerned about his lack of health insurance. However, he also was looking forward to finishing his fifth solo album, "Kicking at the Perfumed Air," at his studio, Pieholden Suites, named after the song on "Summerteeth" that best encapsulates his talents as an arranger.

"This whole experience [with the hip pain] has really taught me to look both inward and outward for support, and I've learned things about myself that I thought I had completely figured out years ago," Bennett wrote. "Family and friends have helped me to keep faith in a future that will actually be much more carefree than my constricted present state. I encourage you all to tell me stories of recovery, as they really do help... All in all, I'm 'in a really good place' right now; I'm just waiting until I can make it all happen."

Bennett's former bandmates in Wilco are touring in Spain and could not be reached for comment. But Burch said he had spoken to bassist John Stirratt, and the band was "broken up" about the news.

"He was an extremely talented musician and a great person, and I'll miss him terribly," Burch added.

From Wilco's website: (http://beta.wilcoworld.net/index.php)

We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him -- as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time.

I have to say, this really didn't sit well with me at all, on any level, actually. I've had real friends die recently, and I mean real friends, not just people I knew, and I handled that better. I actually openly wept when I heard about this.

Jay was a very large influence on me. The picture in my sig pic is of me during a recording session with my band. We (mostly pushed for by me) went for a completely diy approach entirely influenced by YHF/IATTBYH, primarily Jay's participation as performer/engineer, etc. When I try and come up with thoughts for a riff or a solo, I think WWJD, and it ain't Jesus I'm thinkin' about. I've got a dvd of random tv appearances and concert footage that I have gone over for hours just to try and figure out a particular fingering or riff of his.

I have no problem wearing his influence proudly, as he wore his influences blatantly (even if I'm not that good at it yet). Just listen to Summerteeth and it's obvious. There's nothing but Beatles, Elvis Costello, Beach Boys and others all over that thing. The Palace at 4am is a great example because that's still got all those influences, whereas after Jay was out of Wilco, not much of that sound lingered. Now the next two albums he did had more misses than hits, and honestly were kind of sad, and not in a good way.

It just always felt like he was still hurt by Jeff, to me. I still even think if you watch IATTBYH, it looks more like Jay is kinda in love with Jeff a little bit. His ousting was like watching two of your friends break up.

I just hope he's at peace.

I found this report about last night's Wilco show:

Wilco played a show in Spain last night. Here's a report (lifted from the viachicago message board):

Jeff commented after the first song of tonight's show, "a sad day in the Wilco camp." He went on to say that the band wanted to send its prayers out to Jay's friends and family and "take some time to remember our fallen comrade and fellow traveler." That was the only mention of Jay's tragic passing during the show, except when the band came out for its second encore and Jeff said, "This one's for Jay," before launching into a spirited version of "Monday."

I wouldn't say the band was subdued, exactly, but it certainly wasn't one of their looser, more goofy performances, as one might expect. I guess there probably was a hint of melancholy, but more than anything, they just seemed pretty focused on playing well. At one point, Jeff asked how the crowd was doing and then someone yelled back, "How are you doing?" And he replied, "I've been better."

Setlist: 1. Wilco (The Song) 2. Hummingbird 3. Hell Is Chrome 4. Handshake Drugs 5. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart 6. Pot Kettle Black 7. Ashes Of American Flags 8. Bull Black Nova 9. You Are My Face 10. Jesus, Etc. 11. Impossible Germany 12. I'll Fight 13. Poor Places 14. Reservations 15. Spiders (Kidsmoke) // E1: 16. The Late Greats 17. Hate It Here 18. Walken 19. What I don't get is, outside of Remember the Mountain Bed, all of those other songs are part of a regular set. Why use your request on A Shot In The Arm, for example? It's virtually a given. And Katja, almost every time I've seen them, if not every time, they've opened with Misunderstood.

If anything I'd request them NOT to play it. It's been played at EVERY show since that album came out!

I'll be there. The last time I saw them was at Tall Stacks and I was not impressed at all. It might have been because my group left MM&W to see Wilco, which I was not to thrilled with at the time.

Great show! If I had a pussy it would totally be wet. They sounded great and Tweedy even had some really funny audience interaction. I was hearing people bitch after the show about what songs they didn't perform but they have so much great stuff that it would be impossible to do it all. I left feeling very satisfied with my Wilco-ness. I didn't record any of it (even though I had my flipcam) because i just wanted to enjoy the music. I had perfect seats too..it was awesome

the breakdown ...? or the chart itself ...?

The breakdown. Is this a show where the fans could vote for the songs played? If so, a ton of Wilco fans voting for a dozen songs off of AGIB and SBS bums me the fuck out. Hell, even if it wasn't the fans, the band picking a dozen songs off those albums while only 5 off of their 3 best albums makes me not regret at all it being years since I last saw them live.

Saw the show on Friday, I am not the biggest Wilco fan ever, but I enjoyed it (god damn there were a lot of fine young ladies there..). Tweedy sounded good and the lead guitarist was amazing. I could not really hear the mix on either of the keyboards and they seemed to have some rough sour sections where maybe the settings on a couple of pedals were off (me nitpicking).

Tweedy did a pretty good job of entertaining the crowd. At one point, he bent down at the front of the stage and held chords and plucked while an older gentleman in the crowd was given the responsibility of strumming the rhythm (which worked out beautifully). Later in the show Tweedy did some kind of "bicycle man" dance for a few minutes while twirling the mic with about 3 feet of leash. He topped this off at the end of the song by flinging the mic in the air and then striking some kind of Elvis style pose and then managed the catch the mic on the way down with little effort (pretty impressive considering the ear shattering thud that would have occurred if he didn't catch the mic).

On a little bit of a tangent: The bars/refreshment kiosks at this venue were called "The Oasis". I typically get a kick out of such clever marketing ploys but this one made me feel like I had a splinter stuck under my finger nail. After ascending what seemed like 500' of stairs, am I supposed to be so exasperated and crawling on my hands and feet begging for even a molecule of water that I should feel joyous that they are willing to part ways with a 12oz beer for $6? The "refreshment" that this "oasis" brought to me seemed to be more of a mirage than anything.

The "died in his sleep" part doesn't sit well with me. After all the emotional and physical problems, and the lawsuit and all... it just lends itself to thinking that he made that decision for himself.

Possibly, but it could also mean a heart attack. He kicked drugs a couple of years ago, and reportedly then gained a lot of weight. Let's face it, he wasn't the healthiest guy around.

Ex-Wilco Member Jay Bennett Died Of Overdose (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/ex-wilco-member-jay-bennett-died-of-overdose-1003986858.story)

Authorities say former Wilco guitarist Jay Bennett died of an overdose of the pain killer, and that they're investigating his death as an accident.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup says tests show the 45-year-old musician died from fentanyl. The drug is found in patches commonly prescribed to treat chronic pain.

Bennett died May 24 after being found unresponsive in his home in Urbana.

Had he gotten the surgery already? Hell, even if he had, the guy was apparently in a lot of pain, so maybe he was still seriously hurting even if he got the surgery. The article says they're looking at is accidental, so it sounds like he might have just taken too many to try and dull the pain from his hip.

Such a shame.

That was a great show last night and the crowd was in a great mood(Thanks to the amazing weather) as well as the band being playful...

Wow, one of the better setlists from them in a long time. Looks like a good show.

Yeah, it was a pretty ridiculously awesome show. The only time I've seen them better in an outdoor venue was at Stubb's in Austin under a not-so-lone-starry Texas sky on my birthday.

Very good to see Rich and Katja and meet Sean and Rich's lady. Would've hung around by you guys longer, but my bandmates had a better spot to check out the show, so screw you guys.

There would be an infinite amount of red arrows in that picture if that were the case.
