Everyone likes to talk about great bands, guitarists, etc...but we all forgot there are great vocalists. And sure his style is a little dated, but the mother fucker was the inspiration for John Lennon, Buddy Holly and so forth...he died so suddenly in 1989.
And yet one of his greatest perfomances pre-death were "Black & White" and SNL (before it got ultra-shitty with music guests.) His perfomance with K. D. Lang of "Crying is amongst some of the best musical performances I ever saw, and I was 11 at the time. What a legend. Guy was phenomenal...

Good call. Orbison influenced a lot more people than you might think -- like Bruce Springsteen.

he always reminds me of summers in Hungary... cause my parents would blast it driving around with the windows down and the summer air whirling through the back of the car tangling and tying my hair into knots

I saw Roy Orbison a few months before he died. Great show even though he only performed about an hour. When he hit that high note on "Crying" his voice was absolutely piercing. Fantastic!

It took me many years before I got to liking Roy Orbison, but once I came around, I couldn't get enough.
For those who loved the sound of his voice, I strongly recommend the music of Israel Kamakawiwo Ole.
The music is different, but the beauty in the voice is there and it can carry you away.
I'd start with the album Facing Future and go from there...
