Today I saw a man get hit by a car while riding his bicycle. He was very old and spanish and got hit by some soccer mom in a SUV. He flew into the middle of the street and just sat there. It happened on Jericho Turnpike for all of you that know Long Island. I called 911 for the first time in my life to make sure someone got there before the bitch left him. They responded very quickly. Have you ever called 911?

I watched a kid at a kindergarten soccer game get hit in the head, go down and not come right back up because he was out like a light.

Dialed them up right away. Told them it was a kid who was hurt and they got there lickety split.

Kid was OK.

One time my mom called 911 when my brother tried to cold start our woodstove without having any idea how to warm up the chimney first. It took the fire chief about 1-2 min to get to my house but the first engine about 5 minutes. I think my house would have burned to the ground if there was a real fire.

Another time I was driving home with my friends from a party and this drunk driver was coming down the wrong way of the highway and swerved about 5 feet from my car and hit the divider. I stopped in the middle of the highway and said "should I call 911?". We all agreed we should keep going seeing as there was some alcohol and drugs on board and everyone was drunk/high.. I kindve regret not calling but I really just wanted to get home after that

Well is your town a paid or a volunteer fire department?? I will say this that when a call comes in for a "structure" fire here a crew is ready set to go within three minutes. Sure there is travel time and what not, but they will be in there as soon as they can. Most firetrucks today are equipped with a minimum of 750 gallons of water. Even if the place is on fire with no incendeniaries or accelerants there will be fire, but the time frame is plenty enough time that they will be able to knock it down and save the structure.

Also, the chief of the department can isolate a room, pull people out of a building and do some pre-planning stuff before the crew gets there. The chief will tell what truck to do (ie, come straight in, hit the hydrant, etc). The chief will do a lot to contain the fire until the crew gets there. Or at least he/she should. I have seen some incompetent chiefs elected only cause of politics, but that is a whole 'nother rant. Bottom line, have some faith in your dept, and trust to know that even the chief by himself has a bare minimum of tools (air packs, water can) to get people out of trouble before a crew gets there. Well at least that is how it is by me...

The dept is entirely volunteer. I think they do a pretty good job for what it's worth, but I think my town is too spread out for them to be completely effective.

The only time that I've ever called 911: the phone in my bedroom (which I never EVER use) has a speed dial for 911 on it . One day I pick it up to make a call and accidentally push the Emergency number. Realizing what I did, I panic and hang up the phone immediately. 10 seconds later the phone rings and it's the 911 operator asking if everything's OK. I explain what a shithead I am and how it was an accident and she says "OK". Two minutes later the doorbell rings and there's a cop on my porch and another one pulling up in front of my house. Apparently, in my town the cops are required to show up everytime you dial 911 whether you need them or not. So, like a fucktard I have to explain how I don't know how to use a fucking phone and appologize for wasting their time.

when i was like 18/19, i would rollerblade every day through my neighborhood.

one day, after rollerblading for a while, i laid down in my driveway with my hands behind my head and looked at the clouds for a while. that might sound weird, but - seriously - i had the most comfortable driveway ever. people i tell that to think i'm nuts...but those who have tested my theory all concur...my driveway was fucking awesome. it was the perfect hill for reclining comfortably while looking up...

so, i wasy lying there, and my nosy old witch neighbor came over to the property line and asked if i was okay. i responded "Yeah, i'm fine..." she asked what i'm doing...i said "i'm lying in my driveway."

she walked away; i laid back. then i looked up to see her and the old man across the street conferring...and he came over and asked if i was ok. i say yes, i'm fine. he asks what i'm doing...i repeat "I'm lying in my driveway!"

a few minutes go by, and a much better neighbor from down the street walked by with her dog...she stopped to ask if i was okay...i said, Yes! i'm fine! she asked what i was doing....i repeated "I'm lying in my driveway!"

she pointed up to indicate the sirens that were then blowing from the fire station 1/2 mile up the road...and said..."that's for you!"

apparently, the old witch and the across the street old codger had conferred about me on the phone...BEFORE coming to check on me...and called 9-1-1.

the volunteer fire fighters weren't very happy to have had to leave their homes and suit up on a hot day for that.

that's my closest interaction with 9-1-1.

Thats funny. also made me think about having 911 on speed dail.. its only 3 digits.. could hit it by mistake..however if someone had a stroke or sumin it would be easier to hit the one button.
