What are some of your favorite programs from the past that were once fantastic and over time have turned into bloated crap and became near unusable?
For me, I'll have to say Nero Burning Rom. Back in the day it burned cds/dvds/iso, and did it well. Was slim, fast, and got the job done. Then they turned it into some pseudo media center pile of garbage that tries to do everything under the sun and couldn't even do that well. Imgburn has replaced nero long ago.

I think the answer we're looking for here is "Windows"

well vista works great, but i never had it back in the day. Just now.
Another bunch of software that doesnt hold up is the Sega CD games. Not that they were any good when they were new, but they would really be terrible to try to play now

Winamp
I was a big fan of winamp, but it became very bulky. Sad, because it was a nice alternative to WMP.

Microsoft Office, when they started that "ribbon" bullshit on the top.
I've switched to iWork for my office app, though OpenOffice is fine too -- and free.

Real Player was pretty much a necessity to hear audio in the 90's. So glad I no longer need to use it anymore.

I would have said Real Player, but I thought it was a piece of shit back in the day too.

Sound jam was the shit, now itunes is weak.
Apple needs to make an itunes light, with just the player and playlists.
I almost love using songbird on linux.
Also imovie.

Tell me about it. I actually went back and re-installed Nero 6 since that was the last version that worked like the "old" Nero.

I'm seriously considering doing that. I have 8 in here now and like stated above, there's a million things it tries to do. I just need it to fucking burn CDs and DVDs. Not have a home page, not open all my media through it, none of that shit.

Imgburn is decent, but I've had a lot more ruined discs than I ever did with the old Nero. Since going back to Nero 6 my burn rate at least 95%.

Real Player and Quick Time have always sucked IMO.
ICQ/IRC protocol aps like Trillian. The protocol is a dying one and the aps like Trillian are over bloated.

I hate how big AIM got too but to be honest I do use it once or twice a month to send files to people that are too big to E-mail. So I need the full, bloated version. I just make sure I go through those set up screens, uncheck just about everything then turn off that annoying homepage bullshit and it's not that annoying.
Netscape Navigator
It used to be the number one web browser. It really went to hell when they made browser skins available for it. Now, it is dead. It is kind of a shame, but the program just became so bloated with needless add-ons.
Norton---started out nice now most of us wont use it because of all the crap it tries to control

Is it dead? I thought it became Firefox

Netscape Navigator still exists but no one uses it. Mozilla and Netscape are interconnected, but Firefox was developed completely independent of the Netscape browser.

OH MAN is this true. And don't even look at Go Back, are you kidding me? My old boss put it on most of the work computers where I worked. It made 2 of the older computers take almost 10 minutes to boot up and stop it's stupid checks to make itself usable.

AVG - once they moved to 8 and tried to make it a suite, it became bloated and just a pain in the ass.
Same with Zonealarm - once an app moves from doing one job to a suite of many apps, it's usually time to find something new to use.

AVG'S had a series of strange fuck-ups that made me stop trusting it, such as labeling a vital Windows system file a "virus" and deleting it, leading to the system no longer booting. I've switched to Avast.
