The worst was around the time of the Iraq invasion, when reporters decided to "correctly" pronounce the name of the tiny Arab emirate where the US Central Command is located. It's Qatar, of course, and for years, people had pronounced it "KAH-tahr." But they tried to make it sound more "Arabic", so it became "Cutter" or "Gutter".

NPR did a story on this at the time where they had some natives of Qatar pronounce it the way they do, and they made a sound that I've only made when I've had severe bronchitis. It's a sound I'm not sure I can make, because I haven't been speaking Arabic from birth. So, therefore, I'll just say "KAH-tahr", thank you very much.

I agree and would add that the "liberal media" is entirely a myth. Sure, they will editorialize issues pertaining to gay marriage and crime statistics, but considering the way that just about any media outlet talks trash about any union about to go on a strike and how none of the major TV networks will say bad things about Ronald Reagan, General Electric and the Disney Corporation, I cannot imagine how the media is promoting a real liberal agenda.

By this definition, the only real liberal media are cartoons like South Park (which is obviously not liberal) and The Simpsons (which is too much of a cash cow to be undermined by FOX).

If the media were truly liberal, they would actively be fighting the FCC at every opportunity. Instead, they practically steam rolled their own censorship.

I also hate the following media sayings:

"soccer moms"

Why punish one of the better sports in the world because you hate women who overly structure their children's lives? Why not punish Tae Kwon Do or Karate?

"hockey moms"

Oh, I see... let's try to orchestrate a positive spin on a game that is essentially the same game as soccer but requires more expensive equipment than soccer and is played, almost exclusively by North American and Eastern European white men.

"the beautiful, hilarious Tina Fey"

The media only seems to stack positive adjectives on Tina Fey. They can't wait to say nice things about her. It is like the media has a form of Tourette's Syndrome while talking about her. To a lesser extent, they say the same things about Sarah Silverman, though I think some media outlets dislike her.

"the big game / the big dance / any other euphemism for a major sporting event"

I would rather not hear about The Super Bowl or March Madness than to hear those stupid code words for the events. Why not just make it illegal to mention The Super Bowl or March Madness like certain dirty words or ethnic slurs.

I say they should call The Super Bowl the N-word (NFL), the F-word (football) or the S-word (Super Bowl).

This reminds me of another saying that O&A, Ron and Fez or some other person in the media uses:

"We're living in a post-Imus world..."
Uggh... I just can't throw my passions behind the aftermath of Imus getting fired because CBS Radio executives are cowards. Especially, in lieu of "Opie and Anthony" getting upset because they cannot do radio contests where red-headed men compete to see who has the most revolting ass-crack.

On the bright side, Ron only uses it to preface an interesting discussion about an interesting topic.

I feel like the Imus and Michael Richards incidents were a perfect opportunities to have real discussions about race in the United States, but... they turned into opportunities for New York-centric media figured to talk about Al Sharpton. If you don't talk about Sharpton, no one outside of New York will hear his messages.

there are liberal media outlets and conservative media outlets and media outlets that just want to sell stuff...and i think at this point EVERYONE knows where to go to get what they want

But they really did a good job in brainwashing people that the entire media is liberal. After Obama said the special olympics jokes my friend goes to me and says "i can't believe they arent even talking about it in the media" and i said "what are you talking about? I hear about it everywhere, i've heard about it too much" and he said "well it wasn't on cnn". Why is CNN considered "the whole entire media" when its just one channel? I don't even know anyone who watches CNN anymore

this is not political, but the phrase "comic genius" is used way too often

my dvr still records "At the movies" after they changed the name from "Ebert & Roeper" and put in those two new clowns. Anyway, when they were reviewing "Soul Men" the casey affleck looking guy says "i know this phrase is overused, but Bernie Mac was, without a doubt, a comic genius"

really? Bernie Mac? He was kinda funny...but genius? I don't even think he was the best "King of Comedy" (DL Hughley was the best)

Then they were reviewing "Adventureland" and the same guy says "Bill Hader is without a doubt a comic genius". I think Hader is good but I don't think hes proven himself to be anything close to a comic genius yet

The blatant lie about media coverage is constantly used. Like with the Tea Parties, even people ON THIS BOARD were saying they got no coverage outside of Fox News. That simply was not true. I rarely watch Fox News and I had heard several stories about them.

yeah. its always used "I heard nothing in the media about THIS story" but the only way you can hear about a story if its from the media. Unless it happened to a personal friend. People are so weird

I also think the people that cry "liberal media" are people who think they are so much smarter than everyone else and its not fair that all the people in the world aren't exposed to their view enough. Like, everyone else in the world just blindly follow the liberal media and only the selected smart people can discover the truth in Fox News. I really think in 2009 everyone knows the deal with the news channels..they know where to hear conservative stuff, they know where to hear liberal stuff, and they can make a decision on their own. Its not a big deal

We're watching Obama's landing and reception in Riyadh in the office right now and I thought of something similar that irks me to no end: people who say "SAW-dee Arabia".

The ruling family is the Al-Sa'ud (pronounced "Al Sow-OOOD"). The correct pronunciation of the country is therefore "SOW-dee Arabia".
