Hey there -

I'm trying to make the wireless wii sensor bar... it can be found here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ryy7oPMZ2gU&feature=related
But the components I got were slightly different than the ones in the video. Plus I'm an idiot.

Here are components I got:

IR Diodes:
http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/946156-emitter-ir-5mm-940nm-clear-40deg-lte-5208a.html
Voltage - Forward (Vf) Typ 1.2V
Current - DC Forward (If) 100mA
Wavelength 940nm
Viewing Angle 40°
Radiant Intensity (Ie) Min @ If 4.81mW @ 20mA

Switch Slide:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=450-1609-ND
Contact Rating @ Voltage 0.3A @ 125VAC

4 x AA Battery Holder
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=BH14AAW-ND

56 Ohm Carbon Filter Resistor:
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=P56BBCT-ND
Resistance In Ohms 56.0
Power (Watts) 0.5W, 1/2W

Now here is the deal:
* I tried doing the battery case red wire lead out to the resistor directly to IR 1 directly to IR 2 (I didn't pay any attention to which wire from the IR diode I attached to first..) then directly to the negative lead from the battery case

it didn't work :(

questions:

1) Does the Battery case with 4 x AA screw up the voltage for me? Should I use two resistors? Am I just screwed?

2)I attached that directly to the switch - the switch has three prongs coming off the back of it - I put the input on the far side, the output on the other - so Prong 1 - In, Prong 2 - empty, Prong 3 - Out, that didn't work. So then I put the input in the middle, output on the end... still didn't work. I soldered a piece of the wire lead to it then twisted it around once or twice.

3) I then attached to the resistor by taking and twisting the wires and then putting some solder on them. Does the resistor have a specific direction? (it has four colors on the band, is one end the pos & the other the neg? or does it not make a difference?) Is my soldering plan dumb?

4) the diodes - one is longer, one is shorter - and I'm twist & soldering directly to the diodes... does this create a problem? and I'm hoping my soldering mechanism does the trick...

I think that's about exactly where I am.. do you have any ideas where I went wrong?

BATTERIES (4 AAxbatteries holder) to SWITCH (3 prongs, don't know what they mean) then RESISTOR (no direction, solder straight to wires) to the diodes.

PLEASE HELP!!!
THANKS :)

I know a couple of electricians.

Want their numbers?

Why would you try to use the directions in a video and then get different components?

Just go get the shit he said to use. Do you enjoy wasting your time?

Everything is the same except the battery holder, which is the only one they had... so I'm wondering if that voltage changes anything around. Maybe I need two resistors. I'm pretty sure this is simple for the EE minded... but I am not that person. Ho hum... I guess it's time to read up on it myself.....

Yeah You better crack open a copy of University Physics before you just start soldiering willy nilly unless you like breaking the stuff you bought.

I like ImproptuRob. He put Googe in his quote area. Those guys really need a bump, no one's ever heard of them.

Googe is ridiculously popular - but if you look closely, I actually am pimping googe's mature, more popular OLDER brother googLe... fewer poems about money, but still fantastic.

OK, well I can't type and you can't solder.

SO we're even.

AHEM! I'll have you know I got that keyboard workin' by my soderin' hands :) I'll get pics up tomorrow. I do miss Jersey.

Wow you got that thing working? I guess I lost 20 bucks.

did they send you a schematic? That would be 10 times easier to work off of then a YouTube video.

The youtube video actually had a schematic with it - the only difference is that the battery holder is 4 AA instead of 2 AA (so like 6V instead of 3V i think... but don't really know cuz I have almost 0 clue)

Without a doubt the voltage difference of the two holders is the problem and it would be more time consuming to "fangle" your way around it. The wired sensor bar is powered by the USB bus which is 3.3 volts. What I would suggest; power it by an old USB cable in the mean time until you can acquire the correct battery holder.
