This guy (Oh . . . let's just call him Fudge Snails because he took a Confidentiality Oath and wants to keep his identity on the down-low) recently took a side job working for the U.S. Census.

Right now they are doing "Address Canvassing" where they are sending people out to every home in the country to verify the Census address list. The thing is that the canvassers all have these handheld computers with GPS and they are instructed to take a GPS "map spot" while standing at the front door of every single house in the country.

Now, if they already have your mailing address what purpose could your exact GPS location possibly serve? What nefarious plans could they possibly have for this info.?

I'll hang up now and listen to your responses.

I will add that the training they are given is very specific. They are not to stand near the mailbox or on the driveway or anywhere else on the property. They must be as near to the front door as possible when they take the GPS "map spot". Weird, huh?

GIS, which is one of the programs they use to map current cities, suburbs etc. Its used for marking houses, various buildings, government sites, parking spots, etc. Its actually very cool software once you learn how to use it.

OK what is the point of this thread? If they already have someone's address they could get the coordinates from that. So really they are getting little to no new information to "track" someone by. It just sounds easier and more accurate for your to do it by computer then to enter an address and have the computer estimate the coordinates.

Geographical information system, there's lots of different types of software for it. I used this for a project for an internship a few years back.

OK what is the point of this thread?

I'm just waiting for LordJezo to tell us how they will use these coordinates to find us and put us in FEMA concetration camps.

If there is no other reason for this thread consider that:

1) They already have all of our addresses so there is no need for the GPS map spotting
2) As mentioned there are much easier ways to get it than sending people door-to-door
3) They paid nearly $1 Billion for these hand-held computers that don't even work half of the time
4) They are paying nearly 150,000 people about $20 an hour to do this busy-work (not that Fudge Snails is complaining)

Well that is not necessarily true. It is more accurate if they are planning to plot things out based on geographic coordinates. BUT it is not like they have any new information on a person

So you guys dont actually knock the door and talk to the person? Or do you actually do this for every single house? I thought the people they paid were the ones who went to the houses of people who didnt send in their census forms.

The Census is one of many examples of where the federal government is extremely bloated and over-stretching.

The purpose of the Census is simply to take a head-count of the people in each state to determine representation in the House of Representatives.

There should only be 2 questions on a Census questionnaire:
1. what's your address?
2. how many people live in your residence?

Anything beyond that is a waste of all of our taxpayer money!!!

In my job, I use GIS every moment of the day. I map utilities.

I do not have a clue how the location of the front door of a home could be of any use to the Government, unless they already have the homes location plotted and now are pinging the front door to get a better virtual snapshot of the home. The images they have is aerial, which usually is from directly above. The newer Google "street view" type maps are very useful to me because it give me physical attributes of the homes I need to look at. As to why the government needs that info, I have no idea. I suspect it helps them plot terrorist running points.

in a katrina situation, they could pinpoint survivors' front doors and airdrop aid onto peoples porches

Its also useful for state and local governments with city planning and things like that. How far the home is from the street, you can plot sewer and power lines, hydrants, storm drains etc. Like I said its cool if you know what you are doing with it other wise it is just boring.

Damn. You beat me to it. I'm sure that's what they're doing. And the reason you have to go to the door is so you don't just drive by the house, activate the GPS, and drive off without knocking on the door.

Well, this is wrong. Go have a look at the IPUMS website to see what all the data collected in the US Census is good for... The data collected can be used for most government projects with regard to policy making and budget restructuring.
Do you think they should make cuts in the welfare program well then, target an area with a known dependence on welfare - chart it over tens years, have those people in that area gained any economic ground? Do they still need as much as they once did? Is welfare making a difference in that area?
Want to know if the schools are operating adequately or if there are enough jobs for grads in an area or if the effects of racial redlining are starting to wane .......IT'S ALL IN THE CENSUS DATA!

If you expect your government to propose and execute legislation/policy then you have to allow them to gather up-to-date information - this is how it works.

I was talking to someone about this a couple days ago when the census duded showed up at his house. I don't think this is for FEMA camps but all part of the slow process of total government domination over our lives. This year it's just GPS of the house but soon enough it will be GPS tracking on each person for some nonsense of learning more about the population movements or something. Who knows, it's scary, but at least I'll have my .357 soon to back up my shotgun when things go bad.

Also it's more than just a survey, you're there most likely looking in doors and observing things that they wouldn't otherwise know. Does the person have an American flag flying or a proper UN flag? Do they have anything on their cars that show they support a non Democrat party? What does the inside of their house look like? Do they have too much wealth displayed and perhaps taxed more?

You're only the first version of the upcoming civilian spy police force.

Census Worker Accused Of Inappropriate Questions (http://www.kctv5.com/news/19341437/detail.html)

She said he started with the expected questions -- "How many people live here?" -- but it didn't take long before the talk took a surprising turn.

Mertin said the man commented about her clothing, asked if she'd like a back rub. She said he even asked if she "was wearing pink undies."

Mertin said she felt immediately uncomfortable and started to back away, but it wasn't just the conversation that bothered her.

"On several occasions, he touched himself," she said.

Towns are now starting to use gps to map property lines for tax maps, fire departments use them to pinpoint fire hydrants.
Every plat and map that traditionally was on paper will be transferred to a computer database and use accurate GPS mapping. Geographic information systems are big business, but towns no longer have the budget, so it may take awhile before they can afford these non-essential project.

Okay forget the nonsense about big brother watching for the census.

The real issue that is going to be talked about in the coming months is the role ACORN is going to play in the census. They have already shown themselves to be an arm of the Democratic party with voter fraud so the census may be used as a tool to increase the power of the party in terms of district lines and such.
