View Full Version : When was the last time you saw a dentist?

I went to the dentist for the first time in 2 years today. It was a combination of high deductible insurance plus lack of pain that stopped me from going, plus the whole OCD thing of people's fingers in my mouth.

It was a pretty pain-free experience, and the dentist noted how he liked my teeth.

(Commish pic here)

So when was the last time you went, and why or why didn't you go?

2 days ago. I was long overdue for a cleaning since they don't take my insurance in Doha.

I can only imagine what dental hygiene is like in the Sandbox.

They probably just pray over your mouth, reading the Koran and shit.

There isn't an option for over five years? I honestly don't recall the last time, but it had to have been when I was in college. I have to be pushing five years. Never had a cavity but it's similar to the cliche "If a tree falls and no one hears it..."

My parents did not go bankrupt paying for my orthodontia for me to neglect my teeth.

As an added bonus, I actually like my dentist and everyone who works in his office.

(Unfortunately, they're out-of-network, so I have to pay face-value, up-front for services and wait to be reimbursed.)

I'm in the middle of an extremely expensive dental procedure that began with the extraction of my top eye tooth. It was such a nasty extraction my dentist is letting 6 weeks of healing go by before we keep going. All this is out of pocket mind you, very gay. We're talking several G's of work, closer to 10 than 5 with all the combined work.

Moral of the story is kids: Brush your fucking teeth. Get cavities taken care of before they turn into an abscess, root canal, cracking in your own head and finally an extraction. Teeth are very important and should be cared for just like anything else but it's easy to neglect them.

No, I'd rather remember the good ol' days.

I have all but that eye tooth in place and hopefully I'll have that back within a month or two. I already had a couple other root canals and fillings. One of my molars is basically all filling! It's a miracle of modern dentistry.

I'll celebrate by bloodying my nose and taking a new 2009 pic.

I went to my dentist's office last thursday. I didn't actually see the dentist, because the hygenist did all the work and he popped his head in and asked "how is everything?" then bounced (didnt even shake the hand this time). If my insurance didnt cover 100% I would have a hard time showing my face in a dentists office.

I need to find a new one that takes Metlife. Its not easy! My previous dentist does what all new dentists do, which is start out having real convienient hours, and then after 6 months, they decide to open 2 days a week and make you wait all day. This guy was open Mon through Saturday! Now he opens Tuesday and Thursday and from 10 am to 4 pm. No late hours, nothing convienient.

Now that I've found a dentist I like (friendly, gentle, small hands) I'm going every 6 months. Been on that rotation for about 5 years now and all is good, only one cavity.

Longest I went without seeing a dentist was ~7 years. Moved back to the city I grew up and thought I'd see if the dentist I saw as a kid was still practicing. Surprisingly he was so booked an appointment. NOTHING had changed in his office in the past 19 years. Same equipment (ok, maybe the curing light had been added sometime in the 80's), same receptionist (his wife), same toys in the kiddy coral, same furniture. Kind of nostalgic and creepy at the same time. Did think it was neat that they still had my chart from my last visit in 1979.

I swear to christ I was out of the chair in 15 minutes.

Make sure you have a WaterPik and some Periomed.
Use an Oral B Rotating brush.
Rinse at least 2 times a day with Listerine.
Floss every day.

Proper home care leads to a healthy mouth.

Good night. I need to brush.

3 or 4 months ago? Not having insurance blows, but I figure it's money being well spent. And my dentist is real good and gives me somewhat of a break when it comes to payment. My whole family goes there and have been for some time.

I'll tell you this, flossing was the best thing I've ever decided to do. Not only did I have a cavity free appointment, but I read at a doctors office that if you floss every day you add 6.2 (or 6.4) years on your life.

You may want to rethink that. There was a story in our local paper about a guy who was unaware of a tooth infection.

On a cold day in December, the active 44-year-old systems analyst, who jogged nearly every day, was on a break at work when he suddenly had no idea where he was.
He told someone to call his wife, who arrived and had to help him to the car.
The Stephens City resident was unaware of it, but an infection in his tooth had caused a grapefruit-sized abscess to form in his brain.
The abscess had ruptured and spilled fluid into his spinal cord. He was septic in minutes.
Adrian was taken to Winchester Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to drain the abscess. The medicine he was given for his sepsis eventually led to a collapsed lung and kidney failure.
He then fell into a coma for about six weeks. His limbs became paralyzed. His liver failed. The abscess required multiple drainings.
"It was as serious as you can get," said Dr. Connie Smith, an infectious-disease doctor who treated Adrian.
Smith has seen people survive with his kind of infection, but the six- to eight-week antibiotic regimen usually takes its toll on patients.

At one point, his doctor gave him a less than 2% chance to survive. He had been given his last rights, and the doctor told him his person goodbyes.

Well, I finally went today, after way too long. The good news is, at the age of 44, I've still never had a cavity in my life. The bad news is, I have periodontitis. I don't have insurance (they said the multiple cleanings would cost about $1,000), but I'm checking into a local community college tomorrow. The tech (who is a good friend of mine) said I'd be a good candidate for their dental hygiene program, and it would save me a lot of money.

If I don't get it treated, it mean no teeth in ten years, and a good likelihood of heart disease.

Barely anybody has Dental insurance and even when they do its usually a "scheduled payment plan" as opposed to traditional insurance. So, don't feel bad. I just spent two grand having amalgam fillings replaced with resin, cleaning, polishing and some other shit. Scaling and planing next week.
