ZOINKS! That sucks, dude. BTW... for future reference, I usually use my external drive to BACK UP the important stuff. Not to be the only source for it. I feel your pain, though. Seriously.
I know there are ways to retrieve the info, though. Don't give up. It may cost you some, but it will be worth it, if family pics are involved.

How technical are you?
You can remove the drive, plug it into the innards of your computer to extract the data or you can pay someone to extract the data.

Yeah, you can definitely send it out and get most if not all of the data recovered.
It's the hidden expense of digital photography. You think you're saving money on film processing costs, but you have to buy hard drives to store the images.

Once my external hard drive was making grinding noises and wouldn't work, turned out the power supply just was bad.
I agree, take it out and plug it in internally or get a usb - sata/ide cable, they're cheap

You must have a data recovery specialist in your area. The computer nerds near me charge 100 bucks to recover files.

I have had this happen to me before and I used a program called Get Data Back (http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-downloads.htm) but if the stuff is really important to you it might be worth paying a professional to get it back for you.

That's why you should have been using Carbonite!!!! Your information could be saved and you could have a discreet affair.
I store my family pictures on an external drive, my laptop, and on an older desktop that is only used for that purpose.

Toss that jigga in the freezer for 6hrs
Oof. Does it look like the external drive isn't getting power at all? If so you could probably pick up an enclosure to recover the data. I have them if you need or can give it a go for ya. However if the drive failed mechanically, I can't really help..
Let me know I can always meet you over here somewhere to pick it up.

YES!
Mike, Styckx speaks the truth. You gotta cool it down, and see if some life comes back to it, and then get that stuff off it, KEEPING IT IN THE FREEZER.

that really blows, i have like three back ups of all of my family pictures and then we also print out the ones we like through snap-fish or one of the other online photo printing places just in case the other three backups go down. i am very anal about it, if you couldn't tell.

im in kenilworth.
not that far.
the data is not lost. just.......... inaccessable.
wife-piece says it sucks, but all the important pix are printed somewhere.
she's not thrilled about the 1800 to repair it, but its something we can do 10 years from now if we want to.

Exactly. I have all my important shit backed up on an internal,
mirrored on an external and then once a week or so I back up to a server.

2G for family memories, it sucks but it's important.
I do redundant backups for photos - I keep new ones on the PC, once I clean or print or edit them I move them to an external, then I burn them to a DVD archive in case one or the other fails at some point. Once I burn the DVD I case it & store it in the basement in a firesafe.
I also print them and keep them in books, but in the event of a loss I like having a few options to turn to, It's a lot of work but I only do it for non-replaceable media.

ok.
talked it out with a neighbor (computer guy for 18 years)
fucker's going into the chill chest for a bit.
when we break it out, we are going to hook it up to his comp as a slave. he's got enough room so that we can pull whatever we can off the drive.

be careful with this, this can also damage the drive with moisture depending on the temp of the drive and the humidity in the freezer

JP is correct. The interior of the drive is airtight, built in a aseptic environment.
But the external portion of the drive is not and condensation can build up after you remove it from the freezer and cause all sorts of hell. The HD runs off of 12 volts so you may see some fire works if not careful.
