So Chris Stanley mentioned on the show that usenet is still around and usenet is basically used for porn. I've never used usenet before. What is usenet? Is usenet worth using?
I currently use bittorrent and just download everything I need (legally, of course) that way. Is usenet better or worse for that? And do you have to pay for usenet?
If you use usenet, do you like usenet?

I made my bones on usenet, as mentioned in the listening thread.
It is still the go-to spot for safe downloads.
Download FreeAgent, hope your provider has usenet access, and enjoy.
And bone up on your UNIX. Yeah. That's how we kick it.

You need more than 360 degrees to fit my cock and balls in.

Usenet is where all the stuff you download using torrents comes from. Every ISP used to give you usenet access but most if not all of them have stoped to prevent the trading of things like kiddie porn and other stuff. Now you can buy Acsess to Usenet and then use a program to grab binaries. I use Grabit (http://www.shemes.com/) for Usenet access and to grab the binaries. The way it works is files are split up into multiple pieces using something like winrar and a movie could end up being 100 rar files. You download each of those rar files and a few par2 files which help fix and piece together the missing parts.
I would stick to torrents if I were you for a few reasons. 1. You have to pay for Usenet 2. It's not as easy as torrents to use and most people do not know how to use bit torrent correctly 3. Most of the contnet that is on Usenet will eventually end up on your favorite bit torrent tracker. Usually things end up on Usenet first then it goes down to the private bit torrent trackers then to the public bit torrent trackers (pirate bay, mini/mega nova) Then to places like Limewire and other p2p file sharing methods.
I like Usenet the speeds are faster then torrents it allows for "Anonymous" uploading and downloading. Usenet is reliable they can shut down torrent sites left and right but they can't stop Usenet. Chris Stanley dosen't know what he is talking about it's used for more then porn all of those movies he downloads most likely originated from Usenet.
In the day and age I would stick with torrents since the same stuff you will find on usenet will end up on a tracker somewhere. There are pros to using Usenet some times files get pulled down and they are on usenet and it's a great place to dump files that you use for another site as a "Storage"
Forgot to add this
The way you find things is by subscribing to "Groups" like say you wanted to download DIVIX movies there are groups for that, But you have to search through the groups subscribe to them and refresh them everytime if you want to see if something new was uploaded. The one program I linked to has a built in search that will search the groups but otherwise it's searching through thousands of groups and subscribing to them and updating them frequently to find new things. I use Usenet for 2 groups really and that's it.

I have been usine usenet for a few years now, its ok for downloading stuff but is chock full of spam. With the right filters though it can pay off though, most internet providers have some kind of usenet service just search under their website on how to setup newsgroups. Watch out though some ISP's limit bandwidth on that port and limit download/upload totals. I have not heard of any ISP in a long time charging for extra usage but it has happened in the past.
Comcast definately does not have a usenet service, but you can access it by using a third party such as giganews which does cost roughly 30 bucks a month.

I'm pretty sure every IPS in the US dosen't off Newsgroup Access anymore and there are cheaper programs out there compared to Giganews. I forget exactly when but most of the big US ISP's took away access. I know that Comcast, Verizon and a few others did. With Comcast I think I got like a 2 gig a month limit so that's why I use shemes and grabit, it's pretty cheap.

I suppose you are right most of them have dropped usenet service. I only mentioned giga cause it was what i have been using, the only reason why, the retention is 365 days with them. Then again I dont know an awful lot about different usenet providers. I just know i used one provider and they only kept articles for 90 days and even then they heavily censored it all.

Yea, thanks to some sickos trading kiddie porn it is difficult to use usenet. Using torrents are just much easier on users right now, and many can not use torrents correctly. Read the torrent comments people, it will save you a nasty experience.

not just the kiddie porn.
the ISP's got tired of hearing from RIAA MPAA so they cut down the binaries groups, which is where the files are.
the last time I was active on usenet, some groups were being flooded by software companies with garbage- because usenet is like a bucket with an intake on bottom - there is finite limit to the amount of space, and when you "put something new" in, the oldest post gets deleted- therefore when they flooded with garbage, it would delete other stuff.
usenet is old school- back in the days before message boards that was where you posted-
alt.tv.simpsons for example ruled.

First rule of usenet is that you don't talk about usenet.

torrents provide an easier user-experience for the most part but it's also dependent on seeders where Usenet it's almost always up and most good Usenet sites provide at least 100 days of retention, if not more. Yea you pay but with mine (easynews) it's 10 a month or 20 gigs, whichever comes first - and any gigs that I dont use gets rolled over into the next month so it's pretty cheap and a nice compliment to torrents.
As far as using it, Google has a ton of links to read - its not that hard with the right app. I use Newsbin but I hear Grabit is really good as well.

Exactly, easynews is well worth the ten bucks a month.

I use grabit which is the easiest one I've come across but now I'm going to look into using Easynews instead of Grabit's provider. I didn't know Easynews rolled over like that.
