My girls sisters laptop is really messed up. She claims just after installing avg. I fiddled with the pc for a bit, but there are tons of glitches, and whacky things going on.

It takes forever to boot, sometimes it boots with no real gui, but moreso a win95 esque desktop gui. The menus are there but the vista graphics aren't. Ill load up the registry and it freezes. Control pannel, freezes. I tried using the restore point just before the avg install and to the furthest date and still its messed up.

She claims she doesn't need anything on the hard drive so I said I'd trash the vista and clean install.

Going through here manuals, disks etc that came with the pc. There isn't a vista boot disc, and I don't remember my desktop comming with one either.

How does one go about doing a clean install on the preloaded vista pcs?

Awww fuck man, she didn't get any installer discs did she? Have the same problem with my relatively new HP laptop with Vista.

I have no idea how to get installer discs. I think you may be able to call them and pay for a copy.

I mean I know how I would do it, but I'd rather not go over that publicly.

Clean install is the way now man, just not sure how you're going to get your installer disc. Vista is fairly simple to install. You MAY have to go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence to get it to look at the DVD drive 1st, but that's not always a problem.

Well yea, that's what I was getting at. Not sure of OP's technical proficiency, but this is what I would do, except I'd just use my own copy I've had and used for awhile now.

Most computer manufacturers have a lil partition or a separate hidden file with all that you need.

Lenovo has n emergency button I push and it reloads a fresh version of Vista.

HP has a partition, all you need is a boot disk and simple know how.

Dell has a disk and partition, the disk is a boot disk that activates the partition.

Acer is very similar to HP's solution.

What brand and how old is the thing?

I love torrents, legal of course.

I do not recommend an inexperienced user try to dl an OS as their first torrent. Hell, most people who dl the occasional torrent are clueless as to how to grab the quality ones and not the malware, spam, or bandwidth hogs.

Just use the comments like the one above this post as an example anytime torrent is brought up.

I'm wondering if microsoft would provide her with a boot disc if she or I called and explained the situation.

I think it would be total bullshit if she were to have to pay for vista when her preloaded pc is garbagio.

Not sure how those monkey fighting monday to friday plane guys work.

Microsuk will not help her.

Who makes the computer? When did she get it?

I believe its hp. I didn't notice when I was trying to fix it, and its a recent purchase, a year or just under. She is going to cuba tomorow, so ill try to fix it while she is gone. If not ill see if hp or the gay big box store where she bought it can help. But non the less she needs a clean install period.

Lesson here: It is still under warranty so call HP tech support and either have them send a disk (extra charge) or explain to you how to create a boot disk that will access the pre-loaded image. Do not try anything else or you will void the warranty.

If it's under warranty, call HP. Yes it will suck but re installation of the OS is very basic, even the Indians can walk you through that.
