A couple of years ago in a trailer for 300 they used a NIN song. Then the other day I saw a trailer for Terminator Salvation and the used The Day The Whole World Went Away for the trailer. Its one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums. I'm happy to see songs that I love getting exposure. Should I feel differently?

Nah, I'm kinda happy Green Day sold out... twice. One of my favorite band growing up and I still like their mid-to-late 90's stuff.

NIN had always lent their music to "good" movies. Trent also isn't with his label anymore, so I don't think he has any control over who gets his music.

But yeah, I like hearing music I love in movies. I have no problem at all with artists selling their music.

20 years ago, maybe. But now, with MTV playing one shitty reality show after another and terrestrial radio playing incredibly tight song lists dictated from corporate HQ (and satellite radio not much better), I am not going to criticize any artist who lets their music be used in a movie or even an ad, as long as it's not for a totally sleazy product.

NIN covered "Dead Souls" for The Crow in 1994.

It's not really sellingo out. Trent didn't change his style or even write a song just for the movie. The movie took his existing music he made how he wanted and added it to their stuff.

It's just business these days, but he didn't sacrifice anything in my opinion.

I have no problem with this anymore. If we aren't going to buy their music anymore, SOMEBODY has to.

And as a side note, I listened to the Fragile recently for this first time in a while and that is a fucking amazing album.

I always liked the Southpark description of selling out.

"If you're in the entertainment industry, and you make money, you're a sellout".
Just the term "selling out" is the most retarded thing ever.

Its not selling out. Selling out isnt just selling your music to some place for money. Its changing the music into something that wasnt what you wanted just to make money.

If you are a band and you are making the music you became a band to make and someone wants to buy a song for a commercial, thats just selling it like selling an album. If some place comes to you and says you make rock songs, but we will give you 10 mill to make pop songs so we can sell it better, THATS selling out

I'm thinking it was the Fragile that was in the trailer to Unbreakable, which is a cute little gimmick.
And I got all excited when they played Every Day is the Same in Wanted but then they just kept playing it for some reason

Trent did a Digg Dialogg about two weeks ago and spent time during it discussing the current state of the music industry. Artists don't make money selling albums. When they are on a moajor label, the label takes a majority of the money, and people pirate the music anyway. By just giving away the music, you then create alternative means to monetize. With the Slip, they figured out how many albums they needed to sell to break even on costs to make the album and set up to sell just that many cds (plus limited edition packages and whatnot), then make up the money merchandising, touring, etc.

It's impossible for an artist to make money in albums in any way, so if a band I love, like nin, needs to sell their songs to commercials to make a living then I can't begrudge them for it.

And most of the people who call musicians sell outs tend to be talentless people with no concept to begin with, like the kid in the rockumentary Hype!

NIN covered "Dead Souls" for The Crow in 1994.

Thank God for that because I was 12 at the time and benefited from learning who Joy Division was.

Letting a movie or commercial use your music used to be selling out, like in the 70's maaaaan. Now with piracy and declining record(yes I said record bitches)sales I don't think it is looked at the same way.like Mojopin said someone has to pay the artist.

The Fragile, Disc one, other wise labeled Left.

I like to put the left one on the right and the right one on the left, just to make Trent an even angrier midget.

Speaking of angry midgets:

That's Trent's future.
