I want to start my own weekly newspaper or newsmagazine in my area. All the ones around me suck, I read them everyday/every sunday and I just think about how much better I could do to report the news or write the headlines. Anyone else have a similar ambition??

Yes you do have a point there. I have considered maybe an online newspaper is more viable. Cheaper and easier but how much readership would I get compared to being on the newsstands and on the coffee tables?

The other thing is I now have less to compete with. Seeing as the locals are shit, it would be a great time for an inexperienced high school graduate to enter the scene. Maybe my publication would be free? Its not really about money its more about getting my voice out there.

That is a good idea I will add it to my punch list. I hope Ron & Fez are ok with me "borrowing" it

I actually thought the weekly papers were doing relatively well.

Actually, now is probably the best time to buy used newspaper printing equipment. I'm sure the Rocky Mountain News has a lot of stuff they're looking to unload.

Bingo. Our lil' paper does good for the three areas served. Granted in these three suburbs of Houston there are less than 100k, it still does well. The one in Pasadena (I think it's still the largest suburb) does even better and delivers more than once a week.

i recently wanted to start a small business in an economy that is awful, in a business that is steadily going down the tubes, to a small town.

Whenever I go home to Massachusetts, I think about a similar plan.

For TV News, my town has 2 choices; the Springfield feed or the Albany feed; both stations are over an hour from me and one of course is in another state!

Since I was a kid, I dreamed of a local news station and still kinda wonder why no one ever tried one.

For everyone poo-pooing Sat's idea, it IS possible to run a local newspaper or newsmagazine and turn a profit. Someone I know does it. The only issue is, he does EVERYTHING involved with it. Ad sales, layout, delivery, writing, etc. He works anywhere between 50-70 hours a week "in season"... but he's his own boss, he works with his wife, and he's happy with his life.

Did you try seeing if you could get a job at one of the local papers? Maybe your writing would in some way have an impact on the rest of the paper.

A couple of quick thoughts:

1. Statistics show that more people are now getting their news from the internet than newspapers for the first time in our history. This is a trend that is not going to change.

2. Weekly newspapers can do better than dailies because of focus. If they purely focus on local news they can do quite well as there is still a need for that information...because the dailies lost that when they cut writers and editorial staff.

We should start our own marketing firm. It'll be like thirtysomething!

So at this marketing firm would I have to whine about my feelings all day?

Well, to a point. Then I take a louisville slugger to your work area and start the Dr. Denis Leary STFU routine. Like I said, this is my vision of thirtysomething.

I love money!!!!!!!! Which is why i want to spend it something that probably wont turn a profit. weird

Well of course I would end up doing all the work. I have a hard time trusting other people to produce something that will be credited to me

I never even took that journalism class my high school offered I doubt they'd hire me. Plus my ideal writing style would be fairly unorthodox. I think they'd keep me on the editorial page

Points taken. My idea was never intended to be the go-to news source for my town. They already have that, and they have a staff larger than my own. I really want to publish only the stuff I think should be publish

I dunno this sounds more and more like a blog every time I think about it. I just dont want to get lost on the internet

Is that the moment in the movie when I get snarky and remind you that the humor is only good because Bill Hicks did it first?
