Any tips? The name I want is currently owned by one of those websites that justs hoards names and sells them to assholes like me.

Has anybody had to deal with this? These guys seem shady in the couple of emails I've sent back and forth.

It's called cybersquatting and it's illegal. Fines up to $150k per violation. I read about it while researching some domain name issues for a client. As it wasn't really the issue at hand, I didn't look too much into it. From what I remember u would need to show that the holder of the sitename has no real nexus between the name and thier business (or otherwise). Bottom line, u should contact a lawyer and see whether it would be cheaper to retain thier services or simply pay the guys off.

They get around that now as well, usually only specific corporation names or business names are held to that standard as well, but that law only covers a company if they do nothing with the site and hold the name until someone makes them an offer for the domain.

These places are so shitty that they will just transfer the name between their companies so they can hold onto it indefinitely, that law was meant to help people get domains but in the end it only hurt, those companies are real assholes.

I'll go ahead and out them right now. It's called MostWantedDomains.com and it seems like this is all they do.

They have a form to fill if you're interested in a domain name, complete with a line where you make an offer. I offered 200 bucks for purchase of the name. They sent me back an email with one fucking line....

"Not even close."

What kind of a cocksucker business is this? I've thought about having a lawyer do the dirty work, but another part of me thinks it's just as effective to get the .net name, which is available.

You'd better go ahead and register it quick, or they might snatch it up just to fuck you over.

Here are some links that explain the prevailing law...

some copyright/trademark hurdles, but a decent internet attorney should be able to steer ya right. Ask for a free consultation, of course.
