Sounds like you got a case of "Antivirus 2009" A nasty rogue. Works itself it pretty tightly.

background on FB? or her desktop?
A lot of desktop backgrounds and screen savers include viruses when you download them.

Social networks like Myspace and Facebook have often been the victim of malware. Some call it Click by Hijacking. Something, maybe an ap, a picture, etc. has malware code embedded so when you click it the malware is now on your computer.
Make certain your anti-malware programs are up to date, run a full system scan on the strongest form of detection, and make sure it is set to scan "archived files."

At this point, it should probably be pointed out that simply getting the popup is not enough to get the malware -- you still do actually have to download the program itself. But it can lock up your browser and make you force quit out of it.
I would really run a browser with anti-ad plugins: AdBlocker Plus for Firefox, or Safari AdBlock. NoScript for Firefox might help too.

I've had experience that this picked up malware that other stuff didnt pick up.
