The grandeur and sadness of a post-human Earth will be coming back to your TV screens soon. The History Channel is turning its hit documentary Life After People into a series (http://io9.com/5204043/the-tragic-beauty-that-no-human-eye-will-ever-see), with more stunning visuals.

The series premiere, "The Bodies Left Behind," makes the rather unusual move of looking at what will happen to those already dead when all the living humans disappear. The episode explores everything from Egyptian mummies to cryogenically frozen bodies, comparing their potential longevity with more abstract attempts to preserve humanity for posterity, such as the Sistine Chapel or the Statue of Liberty.

"Outbreak", the next episode, does what any good second episode should do and unleashes some utter chaos. All the pets roam free, plants grow uncontrollably, and viruses that humans had conquered return with a vengeance. The third episode, "The Capital Threat", appeals to the patriotic side of our post-apocalyptic voyeurism by examining the fates of various symbols of American democracy, from the Washington Monument to the Constitution.

Throughout, Life After People will feature interview from experts in all relevant fields, including engineering, geology, and archeology. The series will also visit sites that humans have already left, such as Japan's Hashima Island, a former coal-mining facility that was once the most densely populated place in human history before its abandonment in 1974. And the series promises to continue the original special's proud tradition of examining what happens to skyscrapers when all the humans leave (I can't help but suspect this whole enterprise is really just a serious, high-minded attempt to make The Simpsons' vision of the Fox special When Buildings Collapse into a reality).

The series debuts at 10 pm on Tuesday, April 21.

I enjoyed the first special, as it was better than I Am Legend... this looks like a great concept for a show.

I saw a commercial for this last night and was immediately interested. I remember thinking to myself that this is a concept we don't really think too much about. If I can remember to watch this when its on I'm def. goona check it out.

my main problem with this show is that it just takes some "Left Behind" approach where people suddenly vanish. it makes no sense!

It's just a hypothetical situation. What would happen to Earth if people were to just disappear? It's not a question of what happens to us, but what happens to Earth. There's no human story involved.

Al Gore would be out of a job.

I don't know if they're directly related (beyond the central idea) but Alan Weisman wrote "The World Without Us" and it's AWESOME (http://www.amazon.com/World-Without-Us-Alan-Weisman/dp/0312347294)! Though I'd imagine the show will cover much of the book without all the hassle of having to turn pages and interpret symbols.

yeah, i get that. but i think it would also be interesting to speculate about what would happen if 6.5 billion people were to suddenly die in one day (or a week) from some super-pandemic.

we'd kinda know that

people would start dying from said pandemic, eventually people would starve, all out wars break out as everyone not yet infected fight over food shelter etc

If we were to disappear tomorrow there is no doubt that this is what the future will be (not may be).

We do A LOT to maintain our comfort level - if we leave Earth goes on unchecked.

That will be another television special, although there probably has already been one.
