Nothing has frustrated TV fans more than the never-ending release of The State DVD from MTV. It has become the Duke Nukem Forever of the television universe.
One minute, it's on and the next minute, it's off. Then it's back on again, then the whole thing gets called off. Then it rises from the ashes like a flaming phoenix into the never-ending sky only to get doused with a fire extinguisher by an MTV Home Entertainment executive.
Now it appears that ill-fated collection of magic discs is coming soon to a DVD store near you until MTV decides it's time to destroy your dreams and tell your children there is no Santa Claus again.
Actor, writer, State cast member and recent Reno 911! addition Joe Lo Truglio announced on his personal website that the complete series DVD of The State has a summer release date or failing that, a release this summer. He also released two never-before-seen images of the DVD box set's inner sleeves.
The inner sleeve of MTV's The State DVDThe inner sleeve of MTV's The State DVD
Now before you decide that this is the news that should cause you to wet your pants, hold up and try not to think about firehoses.
The marketing might be perfect. The timing may be dead-on. But things could fall apart for no reason the same way it has the last 2,143 times someone made an almost identical announcement. MTV seems to have gone out of their way to keep their few good shows from ever seeing the light of day while they literally push their worst shows directly in our faces. I'm still scrubing chunks of Room Raiders out from the pores of my cheeks to this very day.
Thanks to a healthy dose of reality, 200 CC's of suspicion and the pessimisectomy I received the last time this box set was announced, I've learned not to get my hopes too high. In the end, the only way I can be sure this unforgotten gem will hit the shelves is when it actually gets there.
THIS IS HUGE!!! I hope its not bs.

I read up on this every few months... and yeah, it's been all set for awhile they were just waiting for mtv to pay for music rights.
You won't be hearing very many actual songs they used on the dvd. Too pricey.

I have been waiting for this for years, and MTV has been a massive wrench in the gears. They had better not f-up this release again.
My damn ex-wife took my VHS tape of "The Best of The State" when she left, so I haven't been able to watch The State in years. That bitch.

Slightly off-topic, but what's the deal with the guy on the bottom left of the DVD cover? He seems like the least visible post-State cast member. He also seemed to have much less airtime on the show than the other cast members.

That's Michael Patrick Jann, He did alot of the writing.
He did that REALLY overlooked hilarious film "drop dead gorgeous" and I guess does stuff with Reno 911 now.

Thomas Lennon says The State will drop on DVD in July (http://scifiwire.com/2009/04/thomas-lennon-says-the-st.php#more)
Thomas Lennon, co-star of the upcoming comedy 17 Again, told reporters that his cult MTV show The State will be coming to DVD this summer. "July 14th," Lennon said in a news conference on Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif. "For real: Bastille Day. The whole g--damn thing. I have no idea why it's coming out on Bastille Day, but it's coming out on Bastille Day."
The State was an acclaimed but ratings-deficient sketch-comedy television series that ran from 1993 to 1995. Lennon said that the show hasn't debuted before on disc because of music rights issues and the fact that its fan base remains modest. "There was a lot of music clearance issues, and then, you know, it's a cult show," Lennon said. "The fans are die-hard, but there's not tons and tons of them."
Lennon also said that the set is packed with extras, but some episodes have been changed due to those music issues. "It comes with $249 worth of pudding," Lennon joked, referring to one of the series' skits. "It has the crappy music on it. All the music's been—if it wasn't cleared, we had to redo it. And a lot of scenes that were cut—for good reason. They suck. So it's got some incredibly sucky bonus materials, but it has commentaries on every single episode. I've seen the package, so it exists."

Yep. It feels kinda inauthentic without the original music, but I know I'll still buy it if that's possible.
They should put Porcupine Racetrack on iTunes to help advertise. "We paint ourselves green, stick tomatoes in our ears, it'll be a promotional thing."
$10 to whoever names that reference.

Probably my favorite State skit ever.
I was talking to my buddies chick earlier. Is Kevin Allison the only cast member not getting work?
I think he was in the Reno 911 movie, but I haven't heard of him doing anything else.
And I'll believe these DVDs are coming out when I see them on shelves.

Michael Ian Black posted it on his Twitter. I'm downloading it now so hopefully its not just a bunch of computer viruses. I read that when they recorded it they spent all the money to produce it on partying and recorded this totally fucked up so it should be interesting

i just watched David Wain's student film on this site
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/08/david_wains_aisle_six_investig.html
its pretty good. Its a perfect parody of those awful 80s afterschool specials they used to show in health class. And Thomas Lennon and Joe Latrulio are in it and they both look like teenagers. Really cool to watch

i got the dvd on July 3rd. The only drawback i have is the deletion of the music they used.
theres an insert in the set explaining how they couldnt possibly use all the music they originally used.
Due to the fact that it took this long to come out, i wont complain.
The Barry and Levon skit sounds like it was totally overdubbed. i could be wrong, but Marvin Gaye is taken out and the crowd reaction seems canned too.
its a great trip back to the 90s and young John Stewart is in it as well.

The DVD set is great. I was a bit worried I was only remember a minoroty of truly funny sketches, but most of each episode is still fucking hysterical. I really don't miss the music except for the Barry and Levon sketches.
