View Full Version : USA Rugby Team Gaining Respectability

The Olympic Committee is considering bringing rugby back as an official event. This means that the USA gets to defend it's decades old olympic title! (Yes, we currently hold the olympic title) Since our Olympic heyday, the USA team has been the world's doormat...until fairly recently. Alot of the blame could be placed on our commercial media. When there is no media coverage, potential talent is not exposed to the sport. Similiar to soccer's problems, the networks cannot cram a rugby game full of commercials. Players have to put endorsements on their uniforms and the field has advertisements, even between the goalposts. Today we can field a respectable team despite the commercial media blackout here in the United States.
Alot of us need a fix of contact sports, especially after the NFL season ends, even more so after hockey season ends. Sure, baseball is all fine and good but rugby is a 100mph contact sport from beginning to end. It's even legal to hit players on the ground, even stomp them!
We have the IRB Sevens (7 on 7) Tournament going on now. This weekend the USA won a "shield" after beating Portugal, Scotland & Tonga. We got beat by Cooks Islands, New Zealand and Wales. Sevens is a faster game with little defense. I prefer the 15 on 15 Rugby Union style with all the scrums, rucks, mauls, etc... (Especially Bath) But I'll watch whatever is on. Since I'm home on disability I have been staying up until 3 or 4am and that's when alot of games are on Setanta Sports. Most games can be found on internet streams too.
The USA Eagles have some more nationals coming up if anyone's interested. The Ireland game should be a real "cracker" as the Irish National Team just won the grand slam after like 60 years:

Denver Barbarians

The games started in March and continue through the end on May. I wish the Bayonne Bombers played in the Super League. I'd make every game!
Now if only the media would get on board. They can't seem to get around having 40 minutes of action between commercials. I think it's great.
It's also nice when we can talk shit to other countries after we beat their asses.

I wish I could play but I got this horrible bad back. If I could, I would be the smart-assed hooker who farts in the scrums after everyone has binded. (That's rugby talk kids)
There's free live streaming of games at www.justin.tv/live24rugby and www.justin.tv/stusports9 /stusports10 and /stusports11 for all you manly men looking for something rougher & tougher than golf and tennis this summer.
Maybe RonFez.net can start a rugby team. Fez can be the Loose-Head Prop and everyone else can fight over the hooker. (That's more rugby talk...I think)

Munster defeated the Ospreys setting up a Heineken Cup playoffs chock full O Micks! Man I'm telling you, if you get excited watching baseball, you will shit yourself watching the Heineken Cup this year. USA finally plays Ireland this afternoon. Fucking ESPN shows a shitty Super League game yesterday but they won't show our National team against Triple Crown winning Ireland. It should be on www.justin.tv/kostaz005 or /kostaz007 . Maybe ESPN doesn't want to show us embarassing ourselves against another country but maybe that's what it will take for people to start supporting our national team. I think the USA will keep it close here at home (they're playing in Cali) and ESPN should show it given they show crap like lacrosse, bowling and cheerleading on a daily.
Bulls/Chiefs championship yesterday was great esp. the $$$ won on the Bulls. It's a nice feeling to like a team that actually wins. (Im a NY Jets fan) I've been following my favorite Bulls player Victor Matfield all year. He was healthy all year and he did a great job at captain. The fact that he once got in trouble for wearing metal in his arm band brings back fond memories of Iron Mike Sharpe.

07-17-2009, 08:10 PM
Very exciting game at 3am this morning. #1 ranked in the world team New Zealand takes on #3 Australia.
Since August last year, the All Blacks have held the position as the number one ranked team in the world, dethroning South Africa as the IRB's recognised 1st spot on the international ladder.
If Australia end a 23 year, 10 match losing streak against the All Blacks at Eden Park, they will knock New Zealand off top spot.
The Wallabies however, currently third in the world, can only move up a maximum of one spot either way, with the South African Springboks currently second in the world.
The World Champions will claim the top rate on an All Blacks loss, whereras if the Wallabies achieve the unthinkable and defeat New Zealand by more than 15, they would leap-frog the All Blacks into second and consign the defending Tri Nations champions to third position on the IRB rankings.
The Wallabies were second in the world after defeating South Africa last year, but the Springboks regained it a week later with a thrashing of Australia.
Game is on Justin.tv on a bunch of channels @ 3am EST:
/kostaz007
/sportzone001
/namik2
/namikstudio
According to the bookies, the AllBlacks are going to destroy the Wallabies by 19 points.
I hope it's closer than that, but if I was to bet the game I would have to take the All Blacks. The Haka alone is worth a couple of points.
Should be a real good one!!! If you happen to be up at 3am and have nothing to do, this is a quality matchup! Don't miss this one!

Rugby Sevens can officially call itself an Olympic Sport after it won a majority vote at the IOC congress in Copenhagen.
Sevens' presentation led by Bernard Lapasset, IRB President, was well received by the IOC committee with the exciting, fast and huge universality of the sport impressing the members.
Rugby Sevens had 81 votes in favour and eight against with one abstention. Golf was also voted into the 2016 Games passing by 63 votes to 27, with two abstentions. The Bella Centre in the Danish capital hosted the conference.
Both sports will also particpate at the 2020 Games.
"We are excited and honoured to be joining the Olympic Games and I would like to thank the IOC members for believing in our Olympic vision and our values and recognising that Rugby Sevens is a perfect fit for the Olympic Games," said Lapasset
"The Olympic Games will be the pinnacle of the sport for all our athletes and the Rugby family. The best men's and women's players in the world are excited to be able to showcase their talent on the world's greatest sporting stage."
"We are now looking forward to working in partnership with the IOC to develop and implement a Rugby Sevens tournament in Rio that will reach out to new audiences and inspire a new generation of sports fans around the world," added Lapasset.
Mike Miller, CEO of International Rugby Board, called rugby sevens a "modern, youthful and skillful sport" that was made for television and sponsors and "loved by fans and players alike."
Former Argentina captain Agustín Pichot, Cheryl Soon, captain of the Australia team that won the Women's Rugby World Cup Sevens in 2009, Kenya Sevens captain Humphrey Kayange, Anastassiya Khamova, one of Kazakhstan's top female players and New Zealand Rugby legend Jonah Lomu also proposed Sevens' case
Lomu, a former Commonwealth Games gold medallist, said: "To see my sport in the best arena would be fantastic for rugby, men's and women's. We are very passionate about it - you just have to say where we have to play and the best players will come. I can speak for all of them - they will turn up."
Rugby has proposed a seven-a-side tournament for 12 men's and 12 women's teams but would be keen to expand this number if it is logistically possible. Miller also discussed the benefits of an intertwined tournament for the Men’s and Women’s teams.
A reoccurring theme throughout Rugby's presentation was the huge success of the Rugby World Cup Sevens tournament in Dubai.
"Congratulations to both federations. We all look forward to great competition in 2016 and 2020," Jacques Rogge, the IOC president, said.
"Time will show your decision was very wise."
RULES — Rugby sevens uses the same rules as traditional 15-a-side rugby union, with two major differences: Each team has only seven players and each half lasts seven minutes (rather than 40), separated by a one-minute break. Also, the scrum involves three players from each team, instead of eight, and conversion attempts after a try must be drop-kicked — instead of them usually being place-kicked. Matches even after regulation time go into extra time in five-minute periods.
OLYMPIC FORMAT — A four-day tournament involving 12 men's and 12 women's teams. Each country will bring 12 players to the games.
FIELD OF PLAY — Rugby sevens is played on a standard sized rugby field of about 110 meters by 70 meters.
ORIGIN — The format originated in the Scottish town of Melrose, where butcher Ned Haig had the idea of the game as a way of raising money for his club. The first Melrose Sevens was held in 1883. Tournaments are now held in nearly all the 96 countries which are members of the International Rugby Board, the sport's ruling body.
OLYMPIC PAST — The traditional 15-a-side game of rugby was played at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.
DEFENDING OLYMPIC CHAMPION — The United States won the last rugby gold medal at the 1924 Paris Games, beating France 17-3 in a final that included fighting in the stands and police protection for the Americans as they left the field.

USA Rugby in Boulder Colorado announced Monday that the Churchill Cup Rugby Tournament will be returning to Denver, Colorado this summer.
Three days of doubleheader pool play will take place at Glendale’s Infinity Park on June 5, June 9, and June 13, but unlike last year where the finals were held at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, this year’s three finals matches will be played at Red Bull Arena in Harrison New Jersey June 19.
The lineup of teams includes the traditional Churchill Cup participants the United States, Canada, and England.
France, Russia, and Uruguay will replace 2009 participants Ireland, Argentina, and the republic of Georgia.
Tickets for pool play at Infinity Park will be available through Infinity Park Box Office. In 2009, Denver was the first city to host all nine games of the Churchill Cup, which has traditionally been a traveling tournament with matches held in multiple cities.
The Churchill Cup is named for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Established in
2003, the alliance between the English Rugby Football Union (RFU), Rugby Canada, and USA Rugby was created to help develop the sport in North America following a successful tour of the continent by the English National Team in 2001.
They built a WendyBall stadium in Harrison? I dont follow WendyBall but I'm happy the RedBulls are building their stadium so we can use it for real sports like rugby. I guess I'll be checking it out live on June 19. I hope they have mass transit.
I also hope the USA team doesn't embarass us.
I have a feeling our womens rugby team will do better than the mens. Our chicks are tough!
Why is it easier to watch a South African Blue Bulls game in the USA, than it is to watch the USA women's team in the USA? Something's not right there.

You know, honestly, rugby is a much more interesting sport to watch than (American) football. There's constant action, unlike the ten seconds or so of very intense action followed by 45-60 seconds of standing around scratching your ass in football. It's almost as rough -- you don't get the violent, flying collisions you get in football, but there are some nice hits. I've always wondered why it has never attracted more of an audience.

I think one of the biggest reasons soccer never attracted more of an audience is that we just don't see it as our sport, which is probably the same reason baseball never got much of an audience in a place like England. I think the same can be said for rugby in the US.

The NFL is becoming more like the NBA with all the stupid fouls and rules. They're ruining the game I have loved for over 30 years. How can they leglislate helmet to helmet hits? It's ridiculous. If they are REALLY concerned about safety, let them wear flags. The real answer is to get rid of these dangerous helmets. From the day a kid puts on a football helmet, he feels invincible and starts launching himself around like a rocket. Too bad helmets are so pretty and a billion dollar industry too boot! We're stuck with helmets, and probably stupid rules too. Rugby players dont need head to head rules. They police themselves. They have one referee for 30 players. NFL has like 5 or 6 refs for 22 players. No wonder the NFL game has slowed to a crawl like the NBA. I hate when the ref affects the outcome of games.
The media is to blame for no TV coverage. If rugby was on TV people would watch it but they cant saturate rugby with commercials so the media doesn't want it. Not even newspaper coverage! The internet has helped rugby explode the past few years though. I love watching a violent bloody sport without commercials on Sat/Sun morning. It's like watching the NFL channel on Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 8pm.
Im hoping the Rugby World Cup and the Olympics will help popularize it here in the USA. (Even if the olympics is only "Sevens Rugby")

SuperRugby's debut on Direct TV was awesome this weekend, lots of action & blood, with the exception of the fledgling Rebels who could not score a single point in their first ever home game. Fans stayed till the bitter end though...lets see how long that lasts.
Western Force should have won after a monster game by babyface #10. Quade Cooper can suck a bag of dicks, he's a cranky fuck always yelling at his teammates. And he kicks field goals like a retard, I mean really, what the fuck is with the stupid arm pose before the kick?
SuperRugby Champion Blue Bulls were lucky to win against the Lions. Their age really showed in the 2nd half. Still the team to beat.
I'm getting Direct TV installed this weekend for SuperRugby & NFL. SuperRugby is FREE on ch. 490-491!!! I'm leaking clear juice!!!

I love how www.foxsoccer.tv cut out the announcers during Leeds/Newcastle and all you could hear was the field mics and the referee. So fuckin cool. I wish the NFL had that option.
The Bulls won their first 2 games this year playing like shit. I'd like to see them when they play well.
Rebels won their first game ever thanks to Danny Cipriani who took a night off from the clubs to play rugby.
Poor Lions. Played well 2 weeks in a row and lost 2 weeks in a row. They should go back to playing like shit.
Looking forward to Friday night/Sat morning. Rugby is awesome!!!

Who would have thought that this was even a sport here? Good luck US Rugbians!
Rugby is enjoying a resurgence. Don't forget the NFL was formed from rugby and still uses some rugby rules. USA is in a tough pool with powerhouses Ireland and Australia. When rugby finally goes mainstream, we will have better players to compete with these other countries. Right now we would get our asses handed to us by New Zealand, England, France, Argentina, Ireland. USA can barely beat Japan, Italy, & Russia & they suck.

USA plays the Russians Thursday. We should really beat them.
I want to know who made the wise decision to replay USA/Ireland at 1pm Sunday? Nice way to introduce rugby to the American crowd, WHILE WE'RE ALL WATCHING NFL FOOTBALL!!! Idiots! They couldn't replay it at 11am? How about Monday? Jeeze I mean the NFL fan is rugby's target audience. Why would they compete against it? Dumb...just dumb.

Man I hope you guys aren't missing this good rugby. Samoa is playing hard.
World Cup is every 4 years and it's way better than the shit you'll get in the olympics. That's 7's and it's played with 7 players for 7 minute halves. No defense. No mauls. No holding your goal line. Different game.
Enjoy the World Cup while it's here. And while USA is still in it, not 4 long though...

We have WIFI at my diner so I sit at the counter catching up on my rugby games and everyone who sits next to me gets hooked. Especially old guys. They can't believe they play without any protection. Then they wont let me leave until the game is over.
There's even this retarded kid, he's really into country. He wears a big cowboy hat, big buckle, and EVERYTHING is country. He asked me if this was a "country computer" I said sure! This is country rugby too! Then he freaks out when I put on a John Wayne movie. Cute lil retard.
Rugby is seriously addicting. It's the NFL on meth but you can't enjoy rugby unless you have no work life (or life) and can stay up past 3am. I got into rugby after I got disabled, looking for sports at 3am and once I found it I got addicted. Even with shitty streams sometimes. These World Cup streams aren't the best but they want 14.00 a game for PPV so FUCK DAT!

If this was the 70's maybe. Not now. The right wingers would have your rugby balls in a vice. Some cunt would sue for a purple nurple. Running around with an erection could be kinda dangerous too.
Leinster's O'Driscoll out for 6 months for shoulder surgery. That sux.
