The Bears acquired quarterback Jay Cutler today for No. 1 draft picks in 2009 and 2010, a No. 3 pick this year and Kyle Orton, the Sun-Times has learned. The Bears receive the Broncos' fifth-round draft pick this year.

WHY GOD, WHY?!?!

That's a ton to give up. But its the best arm in the league. Maybe not the best all around QB, but one of the best arms I've ever seen.

Solid defense, awesome special teams, great running back, Hester has some value, good pass catching TE.

They need to draft a WR and sure up the defense. Hard to do with fewer picks.

Pretty much all the sports talk here was saying it would take Orton, 2 1st's and at least a 3rd to get him, and that's exactly how it went down. It's a lot to give up, but they still have their 2nd and 3rd picks in a draft that's deep in several of the key spots they need.

I'm just stunned the Bears have a real franchise QB for the first time in my lifetime. Holy crap.

Besides, Angelos almost always fucks up his 1st round picks.

Changed it up.

To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.

To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back a third-round pick in 2009.

Underwood was projected undrafted before the combine. He might last as late as the 4th round. You can get a very solid receiver at 49 or trade the 49 and one of the 3rd round picks to move up to the front of round 2. Alot of options now, they could even trade back into the 1st

I love how some denver fans were talking just the other day about how they are glad to get rid of him, after they see orton in action they will be begging to have cutler back. Chicago fans should be excited to have someone like cutler being able to throw to hester down the field, now if he can just catch the ball.

The Patriots have built their defense in the 1st round.

Yeah, he was the archetypal "game manager" at QB: just go out there and don't fuck up, because it's the defense that's going to win this for us, not the offense.

Yeah say that after the first 6-7 games, orton is terrible. Imagine vicks head but having zero accuracy, that is orton, not can he not throw very deep, he cant hit target that are wide open.

youre probs right, but mcdaniels says he has a system and he seems high on orton (until they turn around and draft dirty shanchez) so i'll give orton a shot. orton IS tied for most passing yards in a game for purdue. he can air it out, and denver has receivers and a solid o-line

I always felt that Orton got a bum rap in Chicago, frankly. He's a coach's kid, has a great attitude and works hard. He doesn't have a cannon, but I thought he got the job done until he got hurt. He had no great receiver last year, and the line is average at best.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did pretty well in Denver. He doesn't have Cutler's physical upside, but I think if he was given a chance with a decent offensive package he could be in the top half of QBs in the league.

I don't think he got a bum rap here at all. People made fun of how goofy he looked and his post-game activities, but his press was mostly positive and the fans, for the most part, really liked him. Every realized what he was: a solid QB and a good team leader but not a gamechanger. He was an ideal version of the typical Bears QB.

I mentioned earlier how giving up the two #1 picks doesn't bug me at all because Angelos has been so shitty with his 1st round picks. I finally spotted an editorial that sums up exactly why I feel that way:

The Bears finally have the quarterback they've longed for. If anyone thinks the Bears paid too much, let me show you the 14 men who have been first-round picks for the Bears in the last 15 drafts: John Thierry, Rashaan Salaam, Walt Harris, Curtis Enis, Cade McNown, Brian Urlacher, David Terrell, Marc Colombo, Michael Haynes, Rex Grossman, Tommie Harris, Cedric Benson, Greg Olsen, Chris Williams. Let's eliminate judging the last two, from 2007 and 2008, because they don't have enough on their résumés yet. Let's look at the other 12.

Stars: 1 (Urlacher).

Very good NFL starters: 1 (Tommie Harris).

NFL starters: 2 (Walt Harris, Marc Colombo).

Had some moments, but ultimately failed: 3 (Grossman, Thierry, Haynes).

Busts: 5 (Salaam, Enis, McNown, Terrell, Benson).

Four of the 12 became consistent NFL starters, or better. An awful, awful track record. That is why Angelo, a career scout who has too often loved draft picks more than A-Rod loves himself, wasn't very emotional talking to me about what he gave up.

Granted, both Olsen and Williams could easily fall into the starters or even very good starters categories, but even then that's a pretty horrid track record with that many 1st round picks.

I've already got it, but my Neckbeard jersey will aways be first in my heart.

Hey, look Mojo!

We got us a quarterback!

(now if we could only find someone for him to throw it to, then we'd really be in business)

Yeah, ideally they need to get a lockdown #1 receiver, but I can live with what they have in the meantime. It's not the best situation, but he's got several decent options.

I realize as I'm watching this exhibition game that I've never seen cutler play before. Holy shit is this going
to be fun.

And if I can give a sleeper fantasy pick? Earl Bennett. He may not be great, but he's going get a good chance
to catch passes.
