Damien Rice is on a subsidiary of Warner Bros.

his first record was on Vector Recordings which was not a WB subsidiary at the time of its release and 9 was released on Heffa I believe. He is now on 14th Floor Records and unless things changed recently they are Indie. He released one album on WB which was a Live Album.

If you want to say he is part of WB now that is fine, but then you wouldn't be able to include White Stripes on that list as they released that album on V2 as a re-issue which is Universal Music Group.

This is why I hate lists like this because there is so much arguing to be had, especially about what can be considered indie/not indie. Do you count distribution deals as being part of Indie? If you do then there are alot of albums that need to come off that list.

I don't think an album has ever bored me more than Newsom's album "Ys". Songs that wander aimlessly for well over 10 minutes, sung in a really annoying warbling voice.

And there's a reason most bands don't have a harpist in them.

Compared to most lists of this sort, I don't find it so terrible. Yes, I would argue about favorites of mine left off, or the order of those included. But it's a helluva lot more accurate than what we usually see.

So let's make our own lists. How about we all come up with our own Top 20, and then I'll tally up the points (#1 is 20 points, #20 is 1) for an overall lineup?

The label...I'm not going to be over-technical about it, though. The 'mats Let It Be, for instance, is eligible, but Tim isn't. The first three Uncle Tupelo's are eligible, but Son Volt and Wilco aren't.

I'd say that even though In Rainbows was licensed to a label with major distribution, it was originally self-released.

The same with Damien Rice and other albums that were eventually picked up by majors.

Which Damien Rice album was released on major label?
1st was Vector
Next was Heffa both indie labels.

you are quite mistaken about Damien Rice as he has stated publicly multiple times that he refuses to sign with major label.

It was reissued as a Vector/Warners (or Sire) album a few months after it's initial release.

You may want to check into that, because it was only Vector unless Warners did the US distribution which in this case shouldn't matter at all.

Again, I don't want to be too nitpicky in this. I'd rather err to the benefit of the artist.

And yeah, the TVT-era for NIN definitely qualifies.

More research - all of his releases have been licensed to Warners.

I knew that a couple of months after I had purchased 0, Warners had taken it over. They even reissued it with additional material. But that's cool to leave it eligible.

Wait, are we picking off the Amazon list? If not, i want to do this but it'll be a pain to remember who did what on which label.

I would have included Songs for the Deaf but they are on Interscope.

You would, wouldn't you?

Their self titled was on Stone Gossard's label, Loosegroove.

I might add Teenage Fanclub to that list.

Alright I'm sorry. And add Bandwagonesque to my honorable mention. I could only pick 20, some slipped thru my thoughts.

I'll post mine, but I'm not researching the labels. If they were distributed by the bigs at some point, fuck it.

I think I have my order complete but I have changed it numerous times.

5. Phish – Juanta

That is a beautiful album, but I prefer the one before it - Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is ok.
Good choice!

In general, would you rather a band you love on a personal level be hugely successful or smaller and more of your own?

it depends, because I want everyone to hear how amazing they are and it is kind of selfish to want to keep a band all to yourself. I understand the connection and it has happened to me quite a bit where a small band I love blew up and everyone knew them but i mean that is the point so everyone hears them not just 5 people. But also sometimes getting big ruins them.

I want the bands to get big without a major label, that is my wish that way they can still do what they want.

Let them have success. Maybe not U2 success but at least enough to allow them to quit their jobs and pay their rent with their music, as well have some solid spending money. I used hide bands away - thinking it was more special that way. Then I realized how petty and elite that is - Share the wealth.
