View Full Version : My dentist retired and I need a cleaning

In my life, I've only had three dentists; my pediatric dentist, my adult dentist, and one dentist I went to near school because I wanted my teeth cleaned before graduation.
I'm extremely OCD about dentists. I have this whole tooth/mouth thing. The one dentist I went to before graduation freaked me out so badly that I now have this highly irrational fear of dentists I do not know.
So fast forward to now:
My dentist who I used for the last 15 years has retired. His office/practice with other dentists is not covered under my insurance plan, so I'm not entirely sure I want to go back to his office anyway.
I need to get my teeth cleaned, but there's like a zillion dentists around me and I'm not sure which one to go to.
So the question is, how do you pick a dentist you're comfortable with?

Who does Liz go to? Your family? Co-workers? I pretty much only go to doctor's on first hand recommendations. It's rare that I am uncomfortable if someone I know suggested them.
Try moving and finding new doctors. It's the worst. I was asking everyone when I moved to Dallas.

I would be willing to offer advice if you are interested.
Except upon looking at the tags you appear not to want any.
Good Luck
PM me if I can help

I didn't think about that. My mom recommended me to the dentist I was using beforehand. Since my mom doesn't have the same kind of qualms I have about dentists, I'm pretty sure she just flipped to another doctor in the office. I can see who she is using and go from there.
Liz's dentist isn't covered under my insurance. Also, her dentist has an office where we used to live, which is a hassle and a half to get to.
If I can't find someone I'm comfortable with, I may just bite the bullet and pay the extra to be in the old office.

I've heard you clean teeth with rusty fishing hooks and your anaesthia consists of a few swigs of Tito's.
I'm on to you, old man!

After the clusterfuck I had when attempting to switch dentists, I am sticking with my original. They are really good, and helped me out of a jam the other week. The office is located in Morganville.. if you want more info PM me.

Incidentally, my pediatric guy was in Freehold/Morganville.
Maybe I should just go back to him. He had an NES hooked up so you could play games while you got your teeth cleaned and floride done.

sweet... I should suggest that to my dentist. Although he does have LCD TV's above your head and you have a remote.

What I REALLY want is sedation dentistry. I have a feeling that a cavity or something is going to be found, and if you think I'm OCD about just having my teeth cleaned, I would have a certifiable freakout with cavity and other similar work being done.
Seriously. I used to love going to the dentist when I was a kid. Now because of my OCD. I have mini panic attacks. I do not like people getting that close to me for long periods of time, especially putting their fingers and metal in my mouth.

sounds like my 3 year old did better at the dentist last weekend getting a cavity filled without sedation or novocaine

You're talking to someone who performed ingrown toenail surgery on his own feet (and quite successfully, I might add)
It's not so much the pain I'm concerned about; it's people's hands in my mouth.
My company changed dental plans so I have to give up my beloved dentist for the past 12 years or so. The selections near me are lacking. I may be a minority patient.

But you're not concerned if they knock you out that you will be touched inappropriately? What if your shirt is untucked when you come out of the haze?

they wear latex gloves and the tools come out of freshly opened sterilized packets... trust me I told the dentist to get a new set of utensils last weekend cause it had some tooth compound on it that did not come off in the cleaning process and no matter how sterile it was I wanted a new set for my kid...

Again, it's not the sterility of anything, it's just... hands... motion... movement... in my mouth. Not good. it creeps me out.

SO DON'T GO TO THE DENTIST.
Brush your teeth twice a day, floss, use mouthwash...fuck them. It's basically a scam if you take care of your teeth.

thought of just keeping your eyes shut? maybe play some music so you can concentrate on that?
When you panic like that it's all about relaxing... breathing and trying to concentrate on anything but what freaks you out and has you in panic.

Actually that stems from something else. The podiatrist I went to would have been really good looking if she wasn't the size of a barrell. She also made the mistake of leaving me alone in a room WITH ALL HER TOOLS OUT for about 20 minutes. So I was in that empty room, looking at the tools, and seeing drills and other stuff I had no idea what the were used for.
I promptly freaked out, went home, cut away the infected tissue, and actually pulledthe nail fragment that was causing the inflammation through a small hole in the front of my foot.
I dressed it with neosporin and epsom salts. Healed quite nicely. Haven't had a foot problem since, knock wood.

I TAKE CARE OF MY TEETH
I still get cavities and need cleanings. Healthy teeth and gum are directly related to heart health.

after reading the first few lines I thought you were going to say you used her tools while waiting.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
I went for a cleaning for the first time in 7 years last year and everything was fine. The dental assistant actually commented on how great everything looked. I always brush at least twice a day, floss twice and use a mouth rinse twice. I also don't eat a lot of sugary foods, so maybe that's kept away the cavaties.
The point is is that Tenbatz doesn't NEED to go to the dentist every year if he's willing to take care of his death.

My post about this way back when.
Incidentally, I went to another podiatrist when I had some tendinitis and she took a look at what I did and complimented me on what I had done.
Maybe I should be a doctor.

well usually you get a cleaning with your check up. I can't always afford it but really should get one once a year.
Maybe Matty should get a Rotadent or sonicare toothbrush :) (see my question in the Dr JoeK thread)

I haven't been to a dentist in almost 2 years. But I do want a cleaning. And I do brush every day. I have some tartar buildup I want to get rid of.

Just ask for teh gas. I had the straight up sedation dentistry but it was because I had 6 hours of dental work done at once. The gas and/or a xanax will make you not care.

That's right. Know what the call the person who graduates last in his or her class from med or dental school?
Doctor!

I preformed many an ingrown toenail procedure, I could have done it for a case of beer and some food.
