View Full Version : Would you read a message board about you?

Let's say for a moment that you were a famous actor/actress, musician, athlete.

Would you monitor a message board that was about your movie/tv show/band/team etc?

I would find it incredibly difficult to know that there was a group of people dedicating so much of their lives to talking about me that I would have to read some of it. It would be the real life equivalent of an auditorium of people having a discussion about you and you have the ability to watch from the back. I think I'd have to check it out.

Now, I'm pretty confident in what I do and mentally stable so I would never let what was said get to me (easier said than done, I'm sure) but from a curiosity standpoint I think I would definitely lurk.

I do.

It's glorious.

I'd read it with some morbid curiosity. I think it would be fun to sit there and read the poster's deep thoughts about my motivations, motives and "real" feelings on things so I could laugh about how wrong they probably were.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

You're crazy as a shit house rat, bro. Just admit it.

And no, I wouldn't read it. I see absolutely no upside in it. It's either going to be people praising you or trashing you, and there's the danger of trying to play to your crowd. I believe any artist should do what THEY feel, not try to give their fans what they want.

Aren't you obligated to read it and take every piece of advice and criticism any random poster gives extremely serious and to heart?! Aren't you obligated to incorporate their ideas into your body of work?
Come on now, everybody knows that!

Then I'd use my status on my own messageboard to bang the hot girls.

I think there can also be a happy medium of participation. Kevin Smith was always great about if for years. He would let people trash him and they would discuss it. He soured on it because the dark side got to him. I wouldn't go as far as discussing my merit for the fact that I didn't care but I always appreciated that a fan could contact him.

Like I said, it's a no-win scenario because that comes across looking like a needy person begging for praise and willing to debate fans on a message board hoping to "convert" them.

And for what purpose? To feed your ego?

Seems kinda creepy to me.

Well you say 'looking like a needy person begging for praise' but if you were truly confident in what you do you wouldn't care what you look like.

All you could do is know what you are and not worry about how you are perceived.

EXACTLY. So why debate people who don't like your work? It's insanity.

It's like the time Norton hunted down and confronted critics (even college chicks writing for their shitty little school newspaper) who trashed "Lucky Louie."

That sickened me and really soured me on Jimmy. It seemed maniacal to me. I could never in a million years picture Mick Jagger arguing with people and critics who didn't like the latest Stones album, for example.

You just do what you do, put your work out there, and let the fans and haters debate it.

This place used to be a source of many topics and debates on the show back in the day, but there's less and less of it because the board has taken on a life of its own as time has passed.

We post a lot more about ourselves and things completely unrelated to the show or its content here because RFnet has become a community unto itself. It's just bound to happen when we all know each other as well as we do.

That being said, I've already stated that I don't think Fez should post here. He's only going to get ass kissers responding to his posts and maybe an occasional hater.

If he posted under a pseudonym, however, I think it might help him gauge the true sentiments most people have about the show, his opinions, or whatever.

Well I think in my scenario, you could chat with those who appreciate your work as well.

Personally, I could talk with someone about my work, their opinion good or bad, and walk away from it the same as I was when I entered. I know my strengths and weaknesses.

Again, I don't see the point in it.

If someone started a thread about my guitar playing, for example, there would be people saying they loved it and people saying I sucked.

What am I supposed to do, tell everyone who says I'm great how right they are and battle everyone who says I suck?

When I go on stage or just play my acoustic around a campfire with my friends I play my heart out to the best of my ability. I have absolutely ZERO control over what they think of it.

I'm just saying that I don't think talking on your own message board automatically means that you are unsure of your own ability or have an ego problem. In the Kevin Smith example, he connected and gave info and told stories to a ton of fans. I find that incredibly admirable. I personally wouldn't argue with someone but I would also never let their negative opinion dictate what I think of my work.

Some people on here actually get offended by what someone says about them. I personally find that insane but if that's how other people define their life, so be it. I can only be me and if someone wants to judge me on my film/band/posts then they can. I'd just like to read it to get a kick out of it.

FezFez may or may not be Fez and Ron obviously follows this place pretty closely.
If its good enough for them I will start monitoring drjoek.net (http://www.spreadtheiris.com/)
What should I use as a board name?
