What the fuck does this even mean?

I was just watching a trailer for "Haunting in Connecticut", and it said it was based on a true story. But in the trailer, there's like an arm or something reaching out of a kids mouth, like he's possessed.
That never happened. It is a story I guess, but by that effect, couldn't they say Lord of the Rings was based on a true story? Since it is an actual story.

I also don't know the difference between based on a true story, and based on actual events (if there is a difference).

It's based on a couple in Southbury who had the Warrens come in and give their house a "seance" and clear the demons.
Connecticut has an obnoxious amount of stories like this: http://www.cosmicsociety.com/hauntedct.html Including this gem:
BETHEL - Bethel High School - Infamously known as "Suicide High" because of an usually high number of suicides associated with the school. Sightings of ghosts in basement and second floor accompanied by cold spots.
I've lived in Bethel my whole life, went to Bethel High School for 4 years, and not only is it NOT known as Suicide High by anyone, I have never felt or heard anyone describe any cold spots or ghosts, none, ever. The "Trueness" of the story you tell with ghosts all depends on your desire to tell it.
Edit: As for Suicides, Bethel had a high "Youth Mortality Rate" for several years, right around when I was in High School, which is what I'm guessing is what they are talking about here, only one of these was a suicide. The rest were accidental deaths.

My town (Brookfield) isnt even on that site. The "true story" in this case is that some kid became "possessed" back in the early 80s. The Warrens were involved, and the devil actually left the boy and took possession of his brother in law. Then the brother in law killed his landlord. And his lawyer tried to claim innocence due to demonic possession.

There was a tv movie made about it (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085422/). It has Kevin Bacon in it.

That was the most retarded thing I've ever written about

A good example of this is Texas Chainsaw Massacre which was 'based on actual events.' The actual events were that Ed Gein did some taxidermy on corpses- but thats close enough for 'based.'

From the Wiki for The Haunting in Connecticut

the writer of A Dark Place, Ray Garton, said, "Elements of Carmen Snedeker's story clashed with elements of Al Snedeker's story, and it seemed everyone was having a problem keeping their stories straight. Frankly, I didn't notice until I had nearly finished all my interviews and began going over my notes, then I started having trouble matching up the details." When Garton approached the investigators about the inconsistencies mentioned, they told him, "make it up (the story) and make it scary."

Didn't we already go over this type of issue with the Amityville Horror case????

I read the book when I was a kid and it scared me shitless.
Then I read up on Hans Holzer's account; Holzer believed the place was actually Evil.
What I didn't read about was the subsequent lawsuits between some professional skeptics, "psychic investigators" and the family who lived there ... and the waffling back-and-forth between whether or not it actually happened as recounted in the book.

HOWEVER, families who've lived in the house since haven't had problems with anything supernatural, just crazy fans. I thought that there were laws passed after this happened that made it pretty much illegal to publish the address of any site like this, but maybe I am wrong.

I was reading accounts of what's going on with the CT house where this allegedly took place and the current occupants are getting the same crap as the family who bought the Amityville house out on LI did after the book and film came out.

People are sick.

p.s. - Slacker, that's an awesome song to play while driving through suburbia. I've done it on many occasions for my own amusement.
