View Full Version : "The Three Stooges", ANOTHER unoriginal idea

Guess who will be playing Larry? The most un-funny man in America.
Sean Penn - Larry
Jim Carrey - Curly (in negotiations)
Benicio Del Toro - Moe (has not signed on yet but they want him)
I was never a huge fan but I know tons of guys who are. Is this blashemy?
I remember there as a made for TV movie and Chiklis played Curly and was supposed to be great. Do we really need another one?

Why are people so pissed off about this? It's not like they're remaking old Stooges films. It's a biopic. They have a pretty interesting story and they're getting top shelf actors. What's the problem?

I was thinking the same thing.

The article says specifically that ...
"The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts."
Even so, I will keep an open mind about the project. There have been a number of films about the Stooges over the years but this one has enough big names involved to make me think it might be done right.

I've thought about it more. I love the Three Stooges. I watched more Three Stooges over cartoons I think. I was an addict.
I am happy that there are people out there that would like to bring them back into the limelight. They deserve it. They are still on syndicated tv every week.
AMC made a pretty good TV movie a few years ago. It was kind of inaccurate, but was close enough. Michael Chiklis played a good Curly. Some clips of it are on Youtube.
I just don't get the casting. It's gonna have to be a pretty drastic change for del toro and penn.

I disagree. I think Mary gets worse each additional viewing. Loved it at the time, never keep it on the TV. Dumb and Dumber is the hardest I've ever heard a theater laugh (the snowball scene) so I'd say that.

You're both wrong. Kingpin is the only one that still holds up pretty much just because of Bill Murray.
Gerald
03-26-2009, 12:11 PM
I wish Sam Raimi were doing it instead. He's a Stooge disciple who would bring a lot more visual flair. When the Farrellys are on top of their game (D&D, Kingpin, Mary, the underrated Stuck on You) they're as good as anybody at extracting laughs from a situation but when they're off (Me, Myself & Irene, Shallow Hal, Fever Pitch, The Heartbreak Kid) it's not a pretty sight to behold. However this project has been kicked around their office for a long time now so it's reassuring to know it's not something they're rushing into.

There are some interesting cast members (Sofia Vergara, Larry David as Sister Mary-Mengele). Fortunately, the Jersey Shore group is just a cameo.
From Wikipedia:
Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe Howard
Sean Hayes as Larry Fine
Will Sasso as Curly Howard
Jane Lynch as Mother Superior, a nun who runs the orphanage the trio grew up in
Larry David as Sister Mary-Mengele, a nun who runs the orphanage
Sofía Vergara as Lydia
Jennifer Hudson as Sister Rosemary
Lin Shaye as Nursery Nurse
Stephen Collins as Mr. Harter, the trio's adopted father
Carly Craig as Mrs. Harter, the trio's adopted mother
Craig Bierko as Mac, "one of the heavies trying to exploit the Stooges"
Kirby Heyborne as Teddy
Dwight Howard as Himself
Kate Upton as Sister Bernice
Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi as Herself
Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino as Himself
Jennifer "JWoww" Farley as Herself
Ronnie Ortiz-Magro as Himself

I think this is going to be a box office failure, but the DVD and on-demand business is going to be a big deal.
Also, if you have cable, check to make sure your provider doesn't have Me-Too (A Wiegel-owned station out of Chicago) shows a rather large programming block of The Three Stooges every Saturday night. Rich Koz (legendary Son of Svenghoolie host and frequent Wrestling Observer contributor) hosts filling the viewer in with various facts about each short being presented. This is a plus and a minus, actually. Often Koz is explaining how they had to get stand-ins for Curly during the short because he had died before production ended or how they had Curly on set but he had no actual spoken lines in the short because he was unable to talk at the time. Or that Shemp busted his sternum falling off of a table making this short and that the proceeding scenes are featuring either a double or Shemp in a body cast not moving. The trivia can really kill the joy of watching Stooge-A-Palooza.
