One of the best trailers I've seen in a while. It's nice to have a kid-friendly movie that doesn't pander to them at the expense of alienating the old.

Arcade Fire - Wake Up

Thanks.

It's good to see that Spike got to actualize his real vision of a faithful adaptation since at one point it was rumored the studio, after viewing a rough cut, was so turned off by the absence of cgi monsters, pop culture references and fart jokes that they were going to scrap everything he shot and start over with some bootlicker hack.

Arcade Fire - Wake Up

A different version than the album. I like it.

I'm glad we get to see his vision too. Spike is 2 for 2 with great movies, I think this will be the ever elusive 3rd in a row.

I heard Karen O did a large part of the soundtrack. I don't know if she gets the soundtrack credit or not.

The last kid movie I really liked was The Iron Giant. Coraline was pretty good too. I'm hoping since Jonze is at the helm WTWTA will transcend age demographics and appeal to anyone aged 8-80.

I know the Pixar movies get all the praise that would normally be reserved for stuff like Casablanca but I just can't get into that type of computer animation. I walked out of Wall.E even though I love sci-fi.

Spike Jonze's "Where The Wild Things Are" Trailer Gets Tamed (http://io9.com/5184251/)

Slashfilm reported back in February of 2008 that test audience reviews, such as the one below, forced Warner Brothers to push back release date to Jonze's film so he could make it a little less intimidating:

"And some kids at my screening began to cry and asked their parents to leave, so that should give you an idea." "The things are not cute. Max comes off a bit weird and off-putting ‘He slaps his mom!' and he seems confused and not charming at all." "No rumpus, no big set pieces, no 'state-of-the-art' lucrative sequences just some running around on some desert place and thats that."

This breaks my heart a little, because I would love to see a dark take on this book about freakishly large but gentle monsters, from inside a wild kids imagination. Hopefully it still has a Jonze edge, and what was cut will be released in a directors cut DVD, optimistically speaking. But apparently the test audience wasn't the only problem, rumors were circulating that the studio had issues with the main little boy as well, so it's been a long road from then until now. Still, after watching the trailer, you have to admit, what is shown is undeniably beautiful, plus using the Arcade Fire as a trailer soundtrack is a big fat indie fan pleaser, it should be fun if not something new.

The early reviews are pretty much all raves across the board. I caught At the Movies with Phillips & Scott yesterday evening and they lauded it as one of the year's best. Jonze toiled on it for over a half decade so it's good to know that his valuable time and effort has apparently paid off. It's reportedly very dark and radical and it explores a great deal of emotional terrain associated with childhood so we can perhaps breathe a sigh of relief and put to bed all worry that studio interference watered down the spirit of the source material.

Maurice Sendak tells parents to go to hell

This Friday, October 16, the movie adaptation of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are opens in theaters.

The poignant 10-sentence book about an angry boy who is sent to bed without supper and sails to a magical land overrun by wild creatures has been made into a full-length feature film with a script by director Spike Jonze (recently interviewed by the Chronicle) and local boy Dave Eggers.

Ever since the media got word of the film, reporters have hounded Sendak, Eggers, and Jonze. One of the main questions reporters are asking is, Will this film based on one of the best children's books of all-time be appropriate for children?

The creative minds behind this film have seemed to dance around this question in most interviews, but Sendak freely spoke his mind for a Newsweek story, appearing in the October 19 magazine. Sendak, Jonze, and Eggers were all interviewed for the story.

Reporter: "What do you say to parents who think the Wild Things film may be too scary?"

Sendak: "I would tell them to go to hell. That's a question I will not tolerate."

Reporter: "Because kids can handle it?"

Sendak: "If they can't handle it, go home. Or wet your pants. Do whatever you like. But it's not a question that can be answered."

Jonze: "Dave, you want to field that one?"

Eggers: "The part about kids wetting their pants? Should kids wear diapers when they go to the movies? I think adults should wear diapers going to it, too. I think everyone should be prepared for any eventuality."

Sendak: "I think you're right. This concentration on kids being scared, as though we as adults can't be scared. Of course we're scared. I'm scared of watching a TV show about vampires. I can't fall asleep. It never stops. We're grown-ups; we know better, but we're afraid."

Reporter: "Why is that important in art?"

Sendak: "Because it's truth. You don't want to do something that's all terrifying. I saw the most horrendous movies that were unfit for child's eyes. So what? I managed to survive."

Jonez take is very instictual....lots of handheld camera to reinforce an intimate feel...often the cinematography is gorgeous.....the creatures all have strong defined characters with a degree of method acting and Freudian underpinnings. This is probably more for adults who want to unleash a child trapped inside than the average kid raised on more routine kids fare. The boy is full of unfocused anxiety and half formed flights of imagination.
I enjoyed it but you do have to have an open mind.

The initial tide has turned and now the reviews are all over the map. In a way this makes me more intrigued to see it. Unanimous praise is always nice since it unites people together in joyous celebration of the medium, but something with a wide divergence of opinion is usually more interesting to see and discuss.

Just got back from it, I personally loved it but a lot of that may be nostalgia and the fact that I really dig Spike Jones' stuff as a whole. That said, it was good, probably wouldn't bring a kid to it as its a bit dark but overall really good stuff.
