View Full Version : The Jane Goody saga

Apparently, this situation was a gigantic story in England. It got some press here but I find the story fascinating.
Jane Goody was a reality show star, appearing on Big Brother which is or was a huge show over there. Became famous for being kinda stupid, lost fame, found out she had terminal cancer live on TV and became an icon of sorts.
This news piece can explain it better than I can.

I find it really fascinating. She lived so much of her adult life on camera and even everything up to her death. It's like Truman show type shit. Very sad but very compelling.

I tried to care about this, but can't.
She marketed her own death. That may be the most vain thing I have ever heard a person do.

So her kids could have millions of dollars. It's vain but it has its benefits.

For a second I thought this was a typo and you meant Jane Goodall.
But to stay on topic, I have never heard of this woman so I can't speak for her character. Until I see her video footage (which I probably won't) I'm going to assume because she was part of a tv reality show her "documentation" of her cancer was done in pure vain? If it wasn't, or had it been anyone else it could be a great way to educate the public. Or as Savage said, at least her kids might get something out of it?

Why is being on TV a joke? I don't get it. Might not be the most admirable thing but not many of us would turn it down.

Even if it was done purely in vain, I find it amazing that a life was documented like this.
And she had druggie parents, probably wasn't in the best position in her life, got on a TV show and got famous. Found out on camera, that at 27 she would die of cervical cancer. If you're already that famous for being a reality star, why then would you turn away from it?
Like the piece said, millions of girls when out and got checked because of it. The money goes to her two children. She was incredibly famous throughout the world at her death. Just the whole scenario is intriguing.

Most of us might not turn down a chance to be on tv, but going out of your way to sign up for a show that puts your life under the microscope is entirely different in my eyes. They are basically putting their lives in the hands of writers and producers who don't have their best interest in mind. You open yourself, your life, your past and your family up to scrutiny, no thanks.

Exactly. She was already on TV and shit, but the cancer is what got her in the spotlight, and she milked the shit outta it. She could have written a book or started a foundation, but she chose to let the cameras show that she couldn't lift a book or whatever. She's a fucking phony.

Let's think this through as well. Did SHE actually push kids directly to go out and get tested? Or did these women only do so indirectly related her plight bc it was on tv?
Sorry, I don't give out humanitarian awards for just getting cancer in front of a camera.

You may not agree with how she chose to live her last days but how does that make her a phony? Yes she could have written a book or started a foundation, but she probably did what she knew and what she knew already had an audience. I can't fault her for taking advantage of what was given her.

She did what was easy.
She told her agent or publicist one day she had cancer, they foamed at the mouth and let her know it wasn't a bad thing. She was gonna be the biggest star in Europe. Just let em' take pictures of the bald head, and show the kids weeping. Maybe they caught her last breath on film (That would be GREAT!)

there is no doubt it has had a tremendous impact on the number of young women going for cervical cancer screening it has increased by as much as 50% in girls inder the age of 30. Also the Government are debating wether to change screening age from 25 to 20. So obviously in that respect some good has come out of her living out her last days in the press.
However she really was a nast peice of work and her racist treatment of bollywood star shilpa shetty was nothing short of a disgrace,.

Women don't do annual Pap tests in the UK? With nationalized health care, I don't see why an inexpensive test is so ridiculously difficult to do, especially seeing as how your tax money is paying for it on the back end with chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Frankly, it seems archaic in my eyes.
To date, the Pap test is still our best indicator of someone's incidence of cervical cancer. It's one of those cancers that can sneak up on someone, but having regular Pap tests increase a woman's chances of having it caught at a treatable stage. I'm no fan of getting them, but I'd rather have a little unpleasant pinch than surgery, radiation or chemo!!! Hell, I'd even rather have a freaking colposcopy than any of those things.
I know there's some question as to their value, but, even with the false positives people get in nations where the Pap test is pushed as a mandatory, regular thing, the instance of cervical cancer among women who get screened is still lower than among women who don't:
Pap testing has cut cervical cancer rates by 75 percent or more in nations with thorough screening. In the United States, there are now about 10,000 cases of cervical cancer each year and 4,000 deaths. More than half the cases are in women who do not undergo screening. (NY Times, 16 January 2007, Pap Test, a Mainstay Against Cervical Cancer, May Be Fading (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/16/health/16pap.html?scp=1&sq=cervical%20cancer%20+%20pap%20test&st=cse), subscription req'd; emph. added)

I'm usually the first person to call people out on being phonies, but I have to be honest... even though attention seeking was most definitely in the mix, *she documented her hair falling out from the chemo*.
That's the absolute reverse of being vain.
The Brits ate her story up and tossed tons and tons of money at the rags reporting this, and they in turn gave her money. As long as her estate was set up correctly, there's no reason to think that the only reason she did it was for her kids.
I don't think she was a "great person", but I will give her props for forward-thinking and marketing herself until the very end. And if she saved a few lives, good on her.
