View Full Version : Who Were Your Childhood Sports Heroes?

I had a few:
Joe Namath: He defined "cool", and if not for his bad knees, he would have conquered the NFL and it's records. One of the best.
Willis Reed: "The Captain", the heart and soul of the Knicks. Smooth shot, could bang with the best of them(Chamberlain, Russell, Lanier, Unseld), would have eaten Patrick Ewing for lunch.
Finally, Mickey Mantle: Caught him at the end of his career(1965), but man, the bat would fly off his bat and what charisma! "The Mick" is my all time hero.

My list includes:
Tom Seaver and the Mets.
Lynn Swann and the Steelers.
And even though I will be the only person to know him
Bruce Boisclair-Mets
I don't know why, maybe because I had his autograph.
After all I was a kid.

To a kid, your favorite athelete catching a ball or winning a game is a hero, and I think thats a good thing in most respects.

When I was a little kid there wa nobody bigger than REGGIE JACKSON. He*was* New York. He had his own cady bar for christ sakes! When I was 8 years old he came to my baseball camp. I almost shit myself when I met him.
Later on it was Don Mattingly. He was the entire package. He played hard everyday and was a leader for his team. He's also the last Yankee Captain that they had, 7 years later.

A DINGO ATE MY SIG PIC!
For baseball, Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox.
He's the reason I became a Sox fan. When I was in Little League I had a Jim Rice glove and wore number 14. I played outfield so I tried to be a great hitter and fielder like him.
For basketball, Kevin McHale. Bird was the star but McHale was gawky yet still did the job down low.

My first sports memory was of Graig Nettles' impersonation of Brooks Robinson in the World Series...I wore #9 on every baseball jersey I ever owned until a certain first baseman made me switch to #23.
At the same time as Mattingly, I was a huge fan of Kirby Puckett. I was short, fat, & had a really good tan, so for a few years "Kirby" was even my nickname.
For football, I was a Bears fan, & how could you not love Sweetness?! But I was also a Giants fan, and white, & was never going to be a runningback, so I latched onto Mark Bavaro. My career as a Tight End only lasted a year, but midget football didn't care what # you wore, so I wore #89 at Left Guard for the next three years.
Until last week's Sports Illustrated came out, I felt really good about the fine, upstanding citizens that I had chosen to idolize in my sporting youth (damn you, Kirby!).
