What single issue can you pick up and read over and over again, and what is it about that book that pulls you back over and over?

Very few stories are one issue anymore. That makes this a really hard question. I really love Killing Joke tho. I think it defines the Batman/Gordon/Joker relationship. The complete immorality of the Joker, Batman as he stands with one foot on the side of the law and the other in a grey area of the vigilante, and then there is Gordon, the last honest man, who inspite of the horrendous circumstances of this book, represents the letter of the law.
Great art work and story telling doesnt hurt either.
The first super hero comic I ever read had a huge impact on me too,but in the annals of comic history it wasnt even a blip. I also flipped out when the JSA first crossed over in JLA 21 but that book has a second part so it wasnt just a one comic story.

Saga of the Swamp Thing #21: The Anatomy Lesson.
Actually now that I think about it there are a lot of stand-alone Swamp Thing issues that you can go back to again and again.

Robin 129
I wasn't a big fan of War Games, but this issue really showcased Tim Drake vs Robin. The final page with him saying his job was to breath for every so many compressions to keep the girl alive until help arived really showed Tim as a heroe.

I bought this as a kid in the 70's. It was a reprint of an old Hulk comic and I fell in love with Rhino. I loved the story and the art and would read it over and over and over again.
So much, in fact, that over 30 years later I didn't even have to search the title or number of the issue. I still remembered it.
It's long gone, but I bet I could still enjoy it right now.

I liked when comics were about the strength of the heroes' characters and their struggle to prevail. I'm also a mark for The Thing. So my winner is...

When I picked this up I was still going to school at New Paltz. Bought from a comic book shop on Church st (don't know if it is there anymore, used to get my Magic cards there). This is the issue that got me back into comics seriously.

Despite the melodramatic cover, this is probably my favorite single issue. I've read a ton of comics that are easily much better, but I think it's that I read when I was 12 and my grandmother was sick (and soon to die) from a lifetime of smoking ad the health complications from it, and reading a comic where a major character dies of cancer really struck me. It really hit me seeing all of these supposed "super scientists" busting their asses to try and cure Mar-vell's cancer and in the end nobody can do anything except gather around him and silently keep vigil as his body gives up. Helped me deal with a lot in terms of accepting my grandmother's failing health and eventual death.

Man, that was such a great run. David's Hulk stories were usually awas a solid, fun read at the very least. He also did one of the best "issue" issues at that time:

Marvel had a bunch of good graphic novels like this one back in the day.
I never read this one but have heard mentioned many times.

It's a bit dated, but it still holds up as a really good story, which is mostly due to Starlin handling the story. The guy wrote a ton of great classic "cosmic" Marvel stories back in the day.

Starlin is a great writer, I don't think he gets the credit he deserves. I was a big fan of his series Breed back in the mid 90's

I never liked the female Capt. Marvel on the Avengers.

He was a Kree. They're an alien race that were essentially the arch-rivals of the Skrulls ad basically "created" the Inhumans.

IMO, the only Captain Marvel that matters has a big lightning bolt on his chest and the powers of 7 gods.
Billy Baston FTW!!!!!

Peter David is such a freaking great writer. Actually, this reminds me of another incredible single issue comic:

I love when a very smart writer takes an established character that has a certain personality trait that really was never explained (other than the character was that way) and the writer explains that trait. And in this issue, David give a great, understandable reason why Quicksilver is such a dick.

Well, you can have two people face the same situation and react differently, but maybe the answer is, he should be.

I can't remember the issue number and I'm too lazy to look (hell if it's the one above), but there's a Peter David issue of X-Factor where they all go to a shrink and it's just brilliant storytelling.
