Per the AintItCool News article: (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40461)

Syfy -- unlike the generic entertainment category “sci-fi” – firmly establishes a uniquely ownable trademark that is portable across all non-linear digital platforms and beyond, from Hulu to iTunes. Syfy also creates an umbrella brand name that can extend into new adjacent businesses under the Syfy Ventures banner, such as Syfy Games, Syfy Films and Syfy Kids.

My response is:

Huh?

Every network eventually will go through an image makeover. I can see this working because if you type in Sci-Fi in a browser, you can get all kinds of different hits. This way, they're separating themselves from all other science fiction sites.

I don't like the new name, but then again, I didn't think SPIKE would work either.

Remember when Spike Lee sued the Spike network? Wait till Sy Syms hears about this. It'll be a shanda.

It's basically branding. The same reason why "Taz" became "Tazz".

I have a feeling this will last as long as "The National Network".

I was hoping for SciFact. Enough with the alien fairytales, lets dull some shit up.

HA! Doubtful. So terrible. One had Ian Ziering from 90210 as a Spanish conquistador fighting a T-Rex. I think it was called Aztec Rex. Someone dropped cash to have that made.

There is the Science Channel. Which actually has some great sci-fact shows.

No, that is not cool.

(FYI, I burst out into laughter because I was sure you were lying when I first read this.)

Someone on AICN's forums nailed it...

It's a mockery that USA can have such amazing programming, whilst Sci-Fi, outside of BSG, really has nothing outside of Ghost Hunters.

It's just Starbuck and Mansquito.

No I petitioned to have that channel renamed to The Egghead Network

Can we petition to have "Sirius/XM" changed to "Crappy music I can get elsewhere so stop fucking with 202, your only good station?"

I just think SyFy is very lame.

I hope this is the downfall of the network. Once BSG is over with there will be no reason to ever turn it on.

Furtherman

Downfall... really? The fact that BSG even exists is testament to a network that a quality show CAN be done.

I feel Eureka is one of those shows and look forward to it returning.

If they would scrap the embarrassing ghost shows and original movies, they could continue with original programming. The have some new shows coming out and they're always worth a look.

True, but seeing their other programming I often think that BSG was a miracle for them. A one time event, not likely to happen again.

Quite a few years ago they had a show called Exposure, It consisted of short independent films of different subject matter. About 80% of each show was quite good.

But lately SciFi just seems unwatchable, especially the way they take the coat-hanger to their programming like Comedy Central does with so many commercials.

the worst thing about sci-fi is that they'll put shows that were cancelled on nbc on their schedule, apparently just to fill time. why would i want to watch a show that has no sort of conclusion after watching it for several weeks?!? they might as well show the first 60 minutes of random movies without showing the rest!

after the BSG finale this friday, they won't have much left. i'll give Caprica a chance when it eventually comes on (2010?), but they're still showing Stargate episodes from 5 years ago as part of their prime time schedule!!! wtf???

Wow... way to insult your audience....

"The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular," Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel, told TVWeek. "It's somewhat cooler and better than the name 'Science Fiction.' But even the name Sci Fi is limiting."
