What do you do more regularly? Illegally download albums and mp3s or actually go and purchase them?

edit: Wrong forum. I should stop drinking or making polls. That should be a poll

I never download anything illegally. Ever.
I spend thousands of dollars a year on music from iTunes and Virgin Megastore.

I want real versions, final mixes, and correct tags. Unofficial sites simply don't provide that. And then there's the spyware issues.

I don't listen to much music anymore outside of the bar jukebox. I listen to 202 and even when I'm home I listen to the shows from audible and some of the fine podcast by the friends of .net

I almost always buy from Amazon or iTunes or eMusic. The only time I'll go to the torrents is to find something that's out print.

If it's a mainstream band on a major label, I leech it off Usenet. If it's an underground band on an independent label I'll support them and buy. If it's a deal like Radiohead or Saul Williams, I'll always pay as much as they ask out of principle.

I will neither confirm or deny reports that I have a half-terabyte drive dedicated to downloadable content on a public forum.

I only "steal" albums of bands that I want to eventually buy but don't have the money to get for the forseeable future. If it's just individual songs I want I'll buy them.

I was using Limewire for the past few years until I saw the news report the other day showing a family who's daughter used Limewire. They had all of the protection that you could have and still an outside expert went into their computer from miles away and retrieved info such as the past 5 years of tax returns etc. Even more - after doing an internet search, they discovered their info (SS#'s Bank #'s) were all over the internet and they had been victims of id theft. It scared me into permanently deleting all Limewire from my computer.

Avoid Limewire and go with torrent sites. Download uTorrent and it will let you search all the major torrent sites for what you're looking for.

I buy on Itunes and will occasionally buy CDs in the store if they are on sale for $10. I have a friend who is connected to the music business and he gets copies of CDs in advanced. So, I get those as well. I remember getting My Chemical Romance's CD "Welcome to the Black Parade" a month before it came out on sale.

I "heard" utorrent worked great and was not a resource hog nor a magnet for malware.

Usenet with a good newsreader is as fast and reliable as you can get.... IMO....

I only "steal" shit that I have had for years but Im too lazy to go digging for them or they have become so scratched they cant be played anymore which is RIAA's biggest bitch the companies make a shitload of money off us having to buy albums we love over and over again. Digital takes that option away which is why they want to control it.

Eh, I don't know how much they're banking on that. What are you doing to your CD's? I can count one one hand the number I've had to replace due to scratching over the last 20 years out of the thousands I've bought, and that was from the old travel pack you'd get for your Discman.

My old discman wound up in Kathmandu. Don't ask me how.

If anyone here that has admitted guilt gets a loud knock at the door, I suggest you don't answer it, and throw your harddrive out the back window.

Well they always want technology that can deteriorate or maybe thats just the tin foil hate theory that I choose to believe.

But I have had to replace dozens over the years and its usually because of just throwing them in the car or loaning them to friends.

I DL a lot of music - anything I genuinely like I go out and buy (and I buy A LOT of albums). I can't imagine paying for digital music, though - it is a virtual product that costs actual money, bogus deal. Often times with newer vinyl releases you get a 'coupon' which allows you to DL the album you just bought - that's the way it should be ... you're just gonna put the record on the shelf and listen to your iPod anyway, right?

Virtual goods. Think about it...

It's definitely the case with a lot of technology, but I've got a ton of CD's that are 15-20 years old and play fine with minimal or no scratches.

Probably not coincidentally, most of the ones I've had to replace were ones I loaned out like you did. Sounds like our friends are the problem.

Download for free.

I love the thought of some "artist" crying in thier Olympic size simming pool because of Limewire.

I will support and pay for up-and-commer bands that I enjoy. Or at least purchase a tee-shirt from them, but bands like Disturbed or U2 can suck my delicious sack.

I cant remember the last time I paid for music.

Sorry but where I grew up, if you paid for something you knowingly could have for free you were considered a sucker.

I figured when I was younger, I overpaid for enough CD's that they dont need to get any more money from me for music.

Yeah I remember paying $18 for CDs inside the Turtles and thought "look at this shiny disc I get!"

It's not worth it....? Do you buy new music? From artists who do believe it is worth it, and who are still making new music?

That's the only place I feel that it really matters. A lot of work goes into song writing, mastering, production, distro, etc - just so you can hear what your favorite artists are up to. It's important to keep them in the game if you enjoy what they do.

Downloading the Eagles greatest hits is very different then downloading the new Zola Jesus, Dum Dum Girls or Thomas Function record.
