Mac. Unless you're a 12 years old boy or a man who wants to relive being a 12 years old boy, Mac does almost all the things you need to do on PC better and with more stability.

Though I will say that there's a sharp learning curve if you're used to PC. I'm still getting used to it and not everything on Mac is better. I just feel there's more better things on Mac.

If you like games tho, you definitely will want a PC instead.

Yes, syntax on the internet has always been an accurate means by which intelligence is measurFAIL!!!

I'm far too early into using a Mac to tell you what specifically is better. As of right now, the only thing I like better is that for people who aren't fond of picking apart their machines and buying and building PCs themselves, Mac is nice because they have nice pit crews ready to do the work for you with a minimum of Indian flowchart support. So probably, if you are computer-stupid like I am, Mac is better.

Whoever said intelligence has anything to do with maturity?

Here's the thing: it's hard to compare in objective terms, because we're talking about two very different computer experiences. That is, you compare processor speed, RAM, system bus speed, video adapters, etc. etc., and the two look almost identical -- and, in fact, many PC's will better far more expensive Macs.

It really does come down to a "You just have to try it" thing. I mean, when I want to fix some photos, for example, I can try to use the shitty software that comes with a Windows box. Or I can go out and wade through dozens and dozens of software options to try to find one that doesn't suck and doesn't cost out the ass (that is, something just short of Photoshop.)

If I'm on a Mac, I go down to the dock and fire up iPhoto. That simple.

That's not a silly way to think of a computer. Apple gets something that the PC makers and Microsoft don't: the raw numbers don't really matter all that much. Providing the customer with an elegant, seamless, smoothly functioning OS experience is an important thing in and of itself.

So if you want me to run benchmarks and provide system specs to back up my argument, sorry, I can't. All I know is that on the Mac, I really seem to not have to worry about the bullshit I do on a Windows machine and I can get right down to business. And that's worth the extra (actually n ot that much extra) I paid for my Macbook.

Those Windows commercials are a failure in several ways. First, they're making a point everyone already knows: yes, Macs are more expensive than PC's. If cost is the most important factor in buying a computer, then you're going PC anyway.

But here's the thing, too: Microsoft had what I thought was a really great ad campaign going with the "I'm a PC" thing. They seemed to be standing up for themselves, and saying, "Hey, Windows software is not buggy garbage, it's great, here's even a cute Asian kid using a Windows computer happily." It's what they needed to do: play up the strengths of the system, show that it's good.

With these commercials, they're back to saying "Well, a PC's fine if you can't afford a Mac." The commercials validate Apple's marketing as being the computer that is an object of desire, not just a box to work on. Maybe they're not bad ads for the current economic climate, but they really play to Apple's image in the long term.

And I'd point out one more thing: Microsoft is a software, not a PC, company. How does it help them to run a series of ads that seem to implictly say that the software on the PC is not important?

The aesthete buys an Apple. This dig in the latest Mac-attack Microsoft ad contains a kernel of truth.

Here's the essential choice: A Dell with a pedestrian design but all the fixin's or a gorgeous Apple MacBook that doesn't offer quite as much? (Whether the prospective buyer needs a maxed-out laptop is a pertinent question too.)

The Dell paradigm is how many people define practicality, i.e., you get more box for the money. Hewlett-Packard of course falls into this category too.

I own both a MacBook (an Air) and a Windows machine (HP)--like many people do: a dualism of sorts: one pleases the eye (mind), the other is more utilitarian (matter). This characterization of the two platforms is greatly oversimplified (dare I mention the dueling OSes: OS X Leopard versus XP/Vista), but this is the kind of thinking that drives many purchases.

Without further ado, let's do a side-by-side.
Aluminum 13-inch MacBook

Aluminum 13-inch MacBook
(Credit: Apple)

Aluminum 13-inch (LED) MacBook:

* Processor: 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
* Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 9400M
* Memory: 2GB DDR3
* Hard drive: 250GB 5400rpm
* Camera: built-in camera
* Connectivity:10/100/1000 Ethernet / 802.11n
* Optical drive: 8x (DVD?RW)
* Warranty: 1 year
* Price: $1,599

Dell XPS 13

Dell XPS 13
(Credit: Dell)

Dell XPS 13 (LED):

* Processor: 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo
* Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 9500M--256MB
* Memory: 4GB DDR3
* Hard drive: 500GB 7200rpm
* Camera: built-in camera
* Connectivity: 10/100/1000 Ethernet / 802.11n
* Optical drive: 8x (DVD?RW)
* Warranty: 2 years
* Price: $1,598

A quick glance at the features shows that the Dell beats the Apple. That said, the Dell isn't an aluminum unibody design, doesn't wow like the MacBook, and doesn't carry the cachet of the Apple brand. The latter two intangibles are important for a lot of buyers.

Perceived performance is also an intangible. The question of which of two comparable systems is faster is often based on one's individual definition of performance.

So, which computer carries the day? I'll let the reader decide.

how do you people have such problems with windows?

I don't have problems with Windows. I still like Mac OS X better.

You don't have problems with Windows because you know what you're doing. You probably have auto updates turned on, you probably back stuff up, defrag, and know to either not download stuff from skeevy download sites or at least be careful. Take care of Windows, and it won't crash, and it runs fine.

But Mac OS X doesn't require that much maintanence, which is why I recommend Macs to people who don't want to do all that work, or who I think can't/won't.

And you keep bringing up performance stats, but I can tell you that my Macbook is a 2.0 core duo with 2 GB of RAM, and my PC desktop is a 2.4 quad core with 4 GB of RAM, and my Macbook does many things, such as opening this site or watching a video, quicker and more nimbly than my PC does. And I do do all the maintenance I listed above.

Sorry, I haven't run benchmarking. And, yeah, there are things I do on my PC I wouldn't try on my Macbook. But it's my experience that Macs are just easier to work with. You have more time to just work or look at porn on a Mac.

I would say since those builds are decently similiar i would assume so. vista/ and or xp are a bit slower opening programs due to the fact that they themselve consume more memory for other needless things than a mac would. So it can keep prefetched data in the dimms and access them faster.

but as of Computing it should perform better on your pc.

I have posted this at least once before in explaining it to CCC.

Macs and PCs are the same internally minus a little chip that acts like a second BIOS that allows OSX to run. That is why I can not install OSX on my Lenovo laptop without some serious hacking that could compromise the OS.

OSX is a UNIX based code, different than Linux, and very different than Windows. Windows over the ages has become increasingly bloated; quick example would be to look at Vista and see how taxing it is out of a fresh load compared to XP Pro. Windows also needs a lot of little things running in the background that uses available memory. OSX does similarly but a lot less of resident memory programs exist versus Windows, so things will load faster and use less CPU clock cycles. Also, out of the box OSX has a huge advantage because of all the software included in the load. For Windows to operate on equal footing we must add software.

Windows set the standard back then, Apple with OSX set a new standard and created a trend. Now MS and others are trying to catch up.

At the end of the day, I am a power user who can keep my Win XP Pro system running clean and efficient. I maximize my RAM and CPU cycles by choosing what loads when the computer starts up, and I am big on security so I do not worry as much about malware.

In the end, it is what you choose to spend your money on. I choose the PC platform and yes I am familiar with Macs and have a working knowledge of that and 2 Linux builds so I know what I am talking about.

I haven't owned a PC for a good 7 years, so I can't make a head to head comparison but I'll tell you what I love about Mac: I don't have to worry or think about anything, ever.

This MacBook Pro is a year old, and yeah, it was pretty expensive but I use it for work so it's a business expense. I need it to capture 30-40 mb raw files quickly, process them into 90-100mb tifs and then retouch them, at times with several layers.

I don't know if a PC could do that reliably or not but I've never had one problem with software or hardware connectivity once the whole time I've had this computer and that's all I care about. I don't want a computer I have to think about. I just want it to work.

The iLife package, for one, which has just about everything you'll need to edit music, photos, and videos. It contains Garage Band so you can record and mix music.

No expensive programs to buy like a Gates machine.

Also, buy any keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, etc. and the Mac instantly recognizes it. You don't have to go and install drivers; they're all already there.

And, like we've said countless times, it just WORKS.

You don't have to constantly update, defrag, etc. to get the goddamn thing to do what it's supposed to.

It's seamless and flawless.

You like building your own computers and constantly fixing them when they break down. Good for you. Ditto for your shitty cars.

Well some of us are fancy men who don't like to get our hands dirty. We like to plug things in (or turn on the ignition) and use them until they're no longer satisfactory.

Then we simply buy a new one. You, on the other hand, somehow think you're more "manly" or "macho" or somesuch nonsense because you keep throwing money into an old shit heap and get it to run again. You think it's great; men like us Apple guys find it embarrassing.

The process of expanding or replacing RAM in a Mac is almost identical to doing it on a PC, by the way.

What makes me scratch my head about this thread is the vehemence here. So some of us bought a Mac. Who cares? Why is it a big deal to you? Why can't you accept I do know computers, and I do like Macs better? Aren't there far better things to get angry about?

I hear about "Mac fanboys", but I don't see any attack from a Mac user that's as angry or offended as the PC attacks I'm seeing here. Except for Gvac, many of us say we have PC's too and actually do think Windows is a fine system. So I don't get it, dude. It's almost like a religious attack.

Oh well, I'm done here. I'll just continue enjoying using my Mac. Have a nice day!

My take is that you buy what you can afford. Macs are expensive and for what most people use a computer for, they are overpriced. If you can afford one, go for it. If not, a PC is a perfectly reasonable choice.

And BTW, you can get plenty of good software for a PC for free and not steal a damn thing.

You can actually get a lot of nice software for Mac for free -- Firefox, Open Office, all kinds of things.

And if you do want to steal Mac software, that's certainly an option too. ;)

The process of expanding or replacing RAM in a Mac is almost identical to doing it on a PC, by the way.

Which is a lie.

I feel that Mac does better at bundling it's software too. The same companies that sell for Windows seem to just do a better job selling for Mac packages that work well together. This is an informal opinion, mainly an observation.

It ever occur to you that maybe you're the one being a wee bit condescending and are just getting back what you're giving in bucketfuls? You're just another sneering engineering cocksucker who thinks he's better than everyone else because he knows how to tinker with the naughty bits of hardware that is going to be obsolete in a few years- much like your life.

I never once said I was better than people because of the price differential between a macbook and a pc of the same level. You're just projecting your own financial insecurities and resentment of the fact that some people don't have the same problems you do.

Anyway, I have to go buy a limousine and set it on fire now. TTYL

Mac. Unless you're a 12 years old boy or a man who wants to relive being a 12 years old boy, Mac does almost all the things you need to do on PC better and with more stability.

I use both Mac OS X and Windows XP. I will not touch Vista. I love Apple's hardware but wish it was cheaper (this is why I still have a really old Mac). There is a lot of great hardware if you go with Windows.

I don't really understand why this thread was started this year, seems like it should be from about 10 years ago.

I haven't spent any time or money trying to 'restore system' or clearing out the hard drive on my Mac. Not once.
My PC was a fucking disaster. Having a PC is like buying a cheap house, buying nice things to furnish it, then not being allowed to install locks. You just cross your fingers and hope no one robs your belongings and shits all over the carpet.

I hear this arguement all the time. Yet I've never really had an issue with a PC

So basically Macs are made "Dummy proof"

So basically Macs are made "Dummy proof"

Not really: if you were learning both systems from zero, OS X isn't that much easier to use than Windows in many ways (but, then again, if we're going to play this, then Ubuntu wouldn't be that much more difficult to learn, and it's free.) But it's been my experience that a bad user can fuck up OS X much less than they can fuck up Windows.

To give a prime example: if your grandma gets a scary message flashing on her screen reading "SECURITY WARNING: YOUR SYSTEM IS INFECTED" at a random website, and clicks on it and downloads the handy "Antivirus 2009" software she is offered, she has just put a very nasty piece of malware on her Windows box. On a Mac, she just wasted a little bit of disk space.

In my continuing to show both sides of the coin, yes I am a PC guy; I also offer this tidbit.

I spent $3k building the computer I am typing on now. It has 2 processors each dual core. This computer can do things like multilayered photo shopping, decompiling a DVD and cutting the bullshit previews in order to copy them, etc a lot faster than most consumer computers. Some of the software I use is free and some costs money. If I add all that up, could I get a Mac, cheaper with similar software? I am sure I could, but being a PC fan, this is what I choose.

I do not understand why the language is used in attacks in some of the above posts when it boils down to personal choice. Would I pay a Mac price for what my 17" Lenovo laptop costs? No, but that is my choice. My laptop is not for editing photos, copying DVDs, etc. My laptop is for portability, the net, watching movies on the go, a third computer here at the desk to listen to R&F and O&A, and a few other tasks. Again, it is about choice.

If this were politics I could understand some of the flaming, but choosing a platform on a computer is not about ignorance, not always about arrogance, it is simply a personal choice.
