We are due for a biggie in Florida. I expect a few 2s or 3s every year, but pretty relaxed the last couple of years. So I am already stocking up for the monster hurricane Joaquin.

The name Frederick was retired after it hit here in 1979. I'm suprised they're still using Fred.
Are they that hard pressed for F names?
I predict Peter 'n' Rose as consecutive hit kings somewhere along the Gulf Coast... but don't BET on it!

really early or really late--the hockey season started in October, the college football season doesn't start until august.

Hurricane experts at Colorado State University have scaled back their prediction for the Atlantic and now say this will be an average season with 12 named storms, including six hurricanes. They say two of them could be major.

Forecasters predict the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season will be "near-normal," with four to seven hurricanes likely, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday, less than two weeks before the season begins. Ha! It's still May, and there's a depression in the Gulf right now!
Not a good sign for things to come.
We started getting rain bands coming onshore from the east today.
The Hurricane Hunter will be sent out to check it out soon.
Not sure if it will develop into anything with any high winds or anything close to a storm category, but this thing sure is acting "Tropical".

Season's first tropical depression forms off Atlantic coast (http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/weather/05/28/tropical.depression.one/index.html)
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- The first tropical depression of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season formed off the coast of the eastern United States, forecasters said Thursday, but was not expected to threaten land.
Tropical Depression One was about 310 miles (500 kilometers) south of Providence, Rhode Island, and about 635 miles (1,020 kilometers) southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Thursday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Well the season has decided to come around. The first named one is now over the Atlantic.
Hello Bill!

Ana is named, and still out there too. Looks like she's headed into the gulf, but not projected to amount to much.
Claudette was the last of the three to form, and she's already come and gone. Came ashore just east of here overnight, but no one to the west of it felt a thing.
Hoping that Bill stays in the Atlantic.

Looks like IDA is headed this way, and will make landfall sometime overnight, or early tomorrow morning as a Tropical Storm.

Typically the "season" ends November 1st, but it's not that uncommon to still have a few pop up in November.
The water temp is working in our favor, and helping to weaken the system. It was up to a Cat 2 just 24 hours ago, but max winds are now below hurricane strength, and with how fast it's moving, the wind shear and colder water, not likely that she'll have a chance to strengthen before she makes landfall.
Shouldn't cause much widespread damage, but those of us just east of the eyewall will probably have a long night.

I tried to exploit Ida and get some good waves for surfing tonight. Didn't work out all too well.
