I tried to do a system restore.
I ran virus scan= ok
It tells me to reboot system, and try again.
went to security settings and tells me security settings not set, restart system !!
Any way around this to try a restore?

When Windows is starting up, right as you see the MS logo, hit the F8 key a couple times. A screen should pop up in black and white, there is an option to choose for "Safe mode" so you'd select this option. You can then attempt a system restore without the assailant drivers or what ever causing the problem interfering. If this does not work, post back here.

Amen. I had to get a PC because I really like to game, and half my time is filled with worrying about getting hacked and working very hard to stay virus free. Also my Macbook hasn't crashed in at least 8 months. I have had my PC for about 2 months and every time I plug my head phones in it crashes. :(

Fuck Mac, nothing but an overpriced fad system with an Unix code OS. Yes the OS is great, but why pay more money for PC components when you can get a similar Win based system for $200-500 less?

Not to mention she was not asking a Mac question.

To follow-up what boosterp said, you may want to start system restore from the Command Line if regular Safe Mode doesn't work. Using commands can often be more successful if you are having trouble getting a useful result when trying to restore from within the OS. Here are the steps:

1. Restart your system
2. When the system first boots, type F8 to bring up the boot menu
3. Select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option
4. Log-on as administrator if needed
5. At your command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
6. Hit Enter
6. This will open the system restore wizard…

There is also a way to manually restore from the XP Recovery Console, again using commands. However, it has been a little while since I have done it and I would have to do some searching for that info.

Good Luck!

Good point, but you can open the system restore panel from the start menu. As for the manual way, I am not certain what kind of user she is so the manual mode may be too daunting.

Yeah, but it seems like there is a glitch that is getting in her way and gunking up the software. Starting in Command Line would be the last "normal" shot if trying Restore from regular Safe Mode doesn't work. I was just tagging your post just in case starting in Safe Mode doesn't do the trick either.

And you are right - the Manual method is a little more advanced. Not hellilshly so, but more than your normal user would get into.

Jesus can we stop with the mac ruuuules, PC drools argument in every computer help thread? There is a mac vs PC thread if you mac users want to yell about your 2" penises.

Anyway its not argument, if mac was that much better it would have 90% of the market now wouldnt it?

My $1000+ less custom built PC DESTROYS anything most macs can do.

Normally, the majority of people that post "buy a mac" have no clue how to work with real hardware, software, etc. It's a "comfy and cozy" machine.

I know this because I use both all of the time. I accomplish MUCH more on my monster pc boxes I make.

Got to the safe mode screen- WHen I hit safe mode- The screen was filled with driver information but would not go to safe mode screen.
Only was to continue was to hit "go toprevious good mode" or something to that effect.
Still could not do system restore
Thanks in advance !! ( HElp!!)

Mendy, do you have a tech savvy friend? You will need them to make what is called a boot disk for your operating system. What happened is that you are missing part of the start up programs that begin Windows, this is why you could not go into safe mode. What a boot disk does is makes it so that you can boot up (get into) safe mode and restore to a prior working condition. Another option which may be daunting is to use the repair feature that comes with your computer's Window's disk.

There is additional info that I need and you are welcome to pm me so I know I can email or give you my cell number in order for me to talk you through a few steps and diagnostics. I have some questions also such as did you install anything before this problem to include Window's updates? I also want to know about your security software.
