You are the harbinger of death, Alex Rodriguez - you will lead them all to their end.
I'm requesting the other to be closed and start fresh with this.
It's rare I watch ESPN highlight shows, but last night was an exception. I turned on Baseball Tonight and they were talking abotu A-Rod's surgery.
The talking head actually had the gall to say that the "Yankees are scrambling to save their season."
Last I checked, the season hadn't started yet.
What's more, A-Rod is going to be back, at the latest, by May.
Do you know what I remember? When Jeter messed up his shoulder the first week of the season in 2003 and he was out for 2 months.
Yankees went to the World Series that year.
Anyway, it's your new Yankees 2009 thread. Have at it.
Thanks for someone finally requesting this.

That's rather bold given what he's dealing with.

Yankees went to the World Series that year.
That team also had a much better lineup. This lineup sans ARod or with a hurting ARod is pretty questionable at this point outside of Tex.
I'll miss the great tags of the old thread.

I won't fulfill the BDC prophecy, but his doctor said post-surgery he should be back by the end of April. That's six weeks.

Isn't 6 weeks the best case scenario number? And I heard a doctor say he'll probably have to go through rehab starts, etc.

Rodriguez will have the surgery at 7 a.m. today at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo. Philippon said Rodriguez will be out 6-9 weeks.
That puts Rodriguez back in pinstripes as early as April 20 or possibly as late as May 12.
The Dr. said after the surgery it was a success and A-Rod should rehab fairly quickly.

Rehab starts for a position player are different than a pitcher. At most, A-Rod would probably see 5-6 games in the minors.
So again, seeing him back in May isn't that much of a stretch.

Nope, tickets go on sale to the general public on Tuesday now. :wallbash:
Who would've guessed? (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3996672&name=stark_jayson)
The most-heard observation about the Yankees this spring: That team could have serious, and potentially fatal, defensive issues. They're range-challenged in left, in right and at shortstop. They have reliability issues at second. Alex Rodriguez is now a major question on every level. And nobody knows what kind of defensive catcher Jorge Posada is capable of being over the long haul. There are rumblings the Yankees are poking around again on Mike Cameron's availability.
And the word from Doug Melvin's office: (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/41531567.html)
I've seen a couple of Internet rumors today suggesting the Yankees might be talking to the Brewers about centerfielder Mike Cameron and/or a third baseman, so I dropped by and visited general manager Doug Melvin during the game against Cleveland.
"We're not talking trade with any team right now," said Melvin.
Melvin said he spoke on the telephone today, just in general terms about their clubs, but said Cameron's name didn't come up and there was no talk of interest in any of the Brewers' glut of third base types in camp.
The irony of this of course is that Brian Cashman could've had Cameron for damn near nothing this off-season, but wanted Milwaukee to pay a portion of Cameron's salary after the Yanks outbid Milwaukee $61M for Sabathia.
Oh Cashman....when will you learn that being a smug prick isn't good business?

There's the press release on what's new and old, food-wise, at the Stadium.
Brother Jimmy's BBQ at the stadium is outstanding. I'm indifferent about Moe's (not a big fan of their burritos but the quesadillas are pretty good) but I'm surprised the Stadium will offer both Carvel and Turkey Hill.
I also wonder if the entire stadium will be Pepsi or if there will be coke offerings in the restaurants.
Coke vs. Pepsi is so stupid. I never understood why a place that services 4 million people a year can't serve both.

If I go way out of my way at Wrigley to the opposite side of the stadium from where my seats are there's a stand where I can get Heineken and Yuengling and such. The only other stand that does that is out behind the bleachers, and none of the vendors carry that stuff around. Just Bud and Old Style everywhere else.

What do you define "good beer" at a ball game? You're not having 4-star dining options. Miller Lite and Budweiser are perfect for the hot sun during a ball game.
I mean, seriously, are you suggesting drinking Stella or Urquell during the game? You say Boddington's and I'll slap you.

OK, I'll accept Yuengling for baseball. But I'd also accept Old Style too, but Old Style isn't available around here so it's more "exotic", I guess.
Heineken is awful.
I'd only drink Sam Adams at a game if it's early or late in the year. If it's too warm, I want something more light.

The Trop uses FieldTurf, not AstroTurf and I will commend them for, at the very least, having dirt basepaths instead of the stupid fucking cutouts. We're working on getting a retractable roof stadium with natural turf built, but until that happens I can't fault them. Honestly, playing in an environment:
1.Where the average Summer temperature/humidity is 96°/98%
2.That is the lightning capital of the world
3.That experiences a torrential downpour every day in the Summer from 3pm-8pm
4.That has mosquitoes the size of UH-60s
I can take the Trop's quirks and accept them as a home field advantage (which they certainly were last year).

Yanks introduce class-segregated dining at new stadium
The New York Yankees released their list of dining options at their new stadium a couple of days ago, which will include everything from Cuban sandwiches to sushi, as well as a cooking station run occasionally by former Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. The new cuisine isn't for just everyone, though: The New Stadium Insider blog notes a curious clause in the team's fan guide:
The food court located near Section 126 on the Field Level offers guests a taste of New York with a variety of concessions, including Boar's Head deli sandwiches, Famous Famiglia pizza and Asian cuisine. Please note that only Field Level and Legends ticket holders have access to the Field Level. (http://www.fieldofschemes.com/news/archives/2009/03/3604_yanks_introduce.html)
Field Level seats start at $90; having eaten Famous Famiglia pizza, I'm pretty sure it's not worth the price. More worryingly, NSI notes that the fan guide says that fans (or in Yankee newspeak, "guests") "are welcome to watch batting practice from their seat location," which implies that the long tradition of all fans being able to go down front to seek autographs before the game, and later being shooed away by surly guards, could be at an end.

Anybody here going to the 4/3 exhibition game? aka - the real first game at the new stadium.
I just did a ticketmaster search for handicapped tickets to the first game (the exhibition game vs. the Cubs) and the "Opening Day" game. Both games had 2 tickets available for the handicapped section right behind the plate (Section 118, I believe). The difference...exhibition game: $50, regular season game: $375 for almost the exact same seat. Damn. It's going to be tough to go see a game this year. Maybe I should go to one of those last two exhibition games.

Interesting Daily New article on Jeter's future replacement at SS. Which might be next year.
Ramiro Pena coming up fast at shortstop for Yankees (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2009/03/28/2009-03-28_ramiro_pena_coming_up_fast_at_shortstop_.html)
Pena has always demonstrated world class defense since being signed by the Yankees out of Mexico in 2005, but his improvement with the bat is what's elevated him to legitimate major league prospect status.
"Best looking young shortstop I've seen in a couple of years," said one National League scout
Jeter really worried me with his defense at the WBC. I think its about time he moves to LF.

Pena is a flashy player with the glove, but he is absolute shite offensively. Rey Ordonez had a stronger bat than Ramiro. Good luck with that.

As I said in the previous threads to Dr Z, the stadium looks pretty much exactly the same on TV in right and left field.
It's centerfield, as Hbox alluded to, which is gonna take a lot of work..
The scoreboard is RIDICULOUS, but in a good way. But it's just "closed" in, as opposed to being open air in sections of the stadium like Citi, Citizen's bank, etc.
I also don't like the Navy blue bunting. They should have kept it royal blue. There's almost too much navy in the stadium now (the seats, etc.)
Other than those quibbles... wow. I can't wait to go.

the navy was intentional -- they wanted the stadium's color schemes to match the uniforms
i was watching the phi/atl game last nite, and noticed how many folks were wearing red -- do that many people wear navy to a yanks game ...?

The new stadium is terrific. I don't recognize it, and I don't feel at all like I'm in the old ballpark. Outfield wall dimensions aside, barely anything about it is the same. It doesn't carry over any of the old stadium's aura/feel... they didn't even get the shade of blue right. It's practically purple. But objectively, it's a very nice place. Screen in center is in fact ridiculous.
Doctor Z
04-06-2009, 09:42 AM
Also, post-game is where you really start to miss the old ballpark. You step outside the stadium, and the baseball atmosphere of the old park is GONE. The bars, shops, general baseball town feel across the street from the old ballpark is non-existent at the new ballpark. Nothing across the street, except one bar called "Dug Out"... some 99 cent stores. What a difference a block makes.

Walking a block to the right isn't going to make that big of a deal. And I'm sure the street vendors will get the idea to move down the street.

I'd be happy with 161-1 (everybody makes mistakes). 160-2 would also be acceptable.

The last time I heard Jerome was after the Yankees let Pettitte go to Houston. He lost his mind worse than usual and said he would never call or watch the Yankees again. Not sure if he ever called after that.

It's "Carton" not "Carlton" (like what you put eggs in, not the dorky male cousin character from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.)
Just remind yourself that they pay Craig to talk out of his ass and he obliges beautifully.

The only host that puts him on his Sommers. Sommers has a sounder for him and everything. (Twlight zone theme)
Last I heard him on was last year some time, but they had mentioned him being ill.
Could you imagine a Real World/Road Rules style challenge between the R&F/O&A oddities, the Wack Pack, and the WFAN crazies?

He should be starting over Nady. I like Nady a lot, but Swisher is better at the plate and in the field. And I'm not just basing this on Swisher's first few at-bats of the year.
I wish one of them could play CF. I might have posted this once before last week. Sorry if I did.

Yes, Swisher hit .219 last year, but he hit the ball harder than in any other season of his career, with a 20.9% line drive rate. Coupling that with the lowest BABIP of his career (.249), and it looks like Swish suffered from some big-time bad luck.
And even though he hit .219, he still managed an OBP of .332 resulting in an IsoD of .113, slightly better than his career average. That means even when balls aren't dropping for Swish, he can still walk his way on base. That's a huge difference between Swisher and Nady. If Nady isn't slugging, he's not much offensively.
Oh, Swisher is a good defensive corner OF. Nady is not.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swisher made a nice play in the sun near the wall today. Abreu and maybe Nady wouldn't have handled it.

I think I am going to start a drinking game so we do a shot whenever:
(1) someone freaks about the April baseball performances as "must-win" games
(2) anybody says "it's a marathon, not a sprint" (Suzyn & John have said that already)
(3) Sterling does any of his "signature" calls ("It's Robbie Cano, don'cha know?") ...
There are more, but it's only April yet.
But, with those 3 alone this week, I would've been puking within 5 minutes.

that probably would have gotten them 1/3 of a new stadium. even the marlins' new digs is already estimated to be $634 million. considering its not supposed to open till 2012, who knows what the final cost will be. 250 mil doesnt buy what it used to......see Rodriguez, Alex.

Actually, in KC, that might have been enough.
PNC Park, Minute Maid Park, Comerica, and a few other stadiums were built at or below 300 million dollars. Of course, that was back in 2000, so who knows how much the economics have changed since then.

Building a baseball stadium varies from place to place, due to amenities, location built, real estate market, etc.
I have no doubt you could build a ballpark in Arizona for extremely cheap right now.
I mean, the BOB was built for 355m. With how depressed the Phoenix market is, I think you could build for less than that. But again, who knows.
