CINCINNATI -- The New York Yankees (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy) acquired infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3966) from the Cincinnati Reds (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=cin) on Friday, giving them a versatile player who has appeared at six positions this season.
The Reds received minor league catcher Chase Weems in the deal.

Michael Kay just said something actually pretty smart. Every series should have 5 umpires, so each one gets a night off and the 5th umpire should be up in the press box doing the official scoring because he has no alligiance to the city he's in.

God bless The Onion:
Derek Jeter Makes Easy Play Look Easy
NEW YORK—Thanks to his vaunted grace and tremendous skill, Yankees captain Derek Jeter was able Tuesday night to make a pop-up to shortstop look as routine as it actually was. "Look at him effortlessly settle under that ball and close his glove around it as it falls slowly in," gushed Yankees radio announcer John Sterling, who also had the privilege of broadcasting Jeter's catch of a soft humpback liner in 2002. Teammate Robinson Cano added that "watching him day in and day out, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that everyone makes that kind of play all the time… It's a joy just watching him glide up the middle, catch the ball on a stolen base attempt, and lay down the tag as if he's done it a million times before, which he has. What a teammate." Later in the inning, Jeter made an easy play look difficult with that jump-throw thing he doesn't need to do.

Kim Jones just said that in all 15 innings of yesterday's marathon, not one ball was hit at A-Rod. He didn't have to field a single ball.
Well then what the hell was this?

Last night's game is probably the best regular season game I've ever been to. I feel so lucky to have been there... I must say, I have never screamed that loudly at a Yankee game in my life. The place was electric. The place was loud. It wasn't as loud as old Yankee Stadium, because acoustically that's impossible. But it was fucking loud. Lost my voice. Came into work an hour late. God bless the Yankees.

when was it the most loud? tex hitting the HR?
Doctor Z
08-10-2009, 08:33 AM
From Damon's HR on, it was insane. A-Rod's shot was really loud too because it finally broke up all the tension from the scoreless tie. But yeah, I guess the single loudest moment was Tex's HR. The crazy thing about his HR is, it wasn't known right off the bat that it was going out. I don't know if they captured this on TV, but the ball was hit SO damn HIGH that no one thought it had a chance. It cleared the foul pole in height, at which point everyone assumed it wasn't gonna get the distance... but I guess the fact that Bard throws like 99 had something to do with the fact that the ball somehow carried out. Not only carried out, but reached the second deck.
And while it wasn't as deafening at the cheering, the chanting that went on during Mariano's top of the 9th sent chills down my spine. Literally 50,000 people chanting "sweep" in perfect unison. It was fantastic.

Doctor Z
08-11-2009, 08:47 AM
Honestly, I don't think there was a letdown at all. We lost, yeah... but was it a letdown? We had our very questionable 5th starter going, and only lost by 1. Aceves showed us another fantastic relief appearance. And there we were again, in the bottom of the 9th with the winning run at the plate and a chance to win. We're not gonna come through every time, but it seems like lately we're always in it with a shot to win.

Here's something I started thinking about yesterday, because I just traded for him 2 weeks ago in my fantasy league at the deadline, and Abraham was kind enough to bring up in his blog today so I wanted to find out what you guys thought. Since some time has passed are you glad or still pissed Cashman didn't make the move for Santana? I was and still am very happy he passed on him. But let's take a look at some things. For the Mets he's 29-16 with a 2.78 ERA and over 401 innings he has allowed 362 hits and struck out 352. That's pretty damn good. Truthfully though it stops there. I know when all that went down in 2007 we had some people here that were quite pissed he wasnt a Yankee. The average speed of his fastball has gone from 91.8 in 2007 to 91.0 in 2008 and was 90.6 this year. He's been what seems like a high injury risk the whole time and he's still owed $98.5 million over the next 4 years. So now that we're a couple years into this move, did Cashman make the right choice?

Doctor Z

If it's borderline, it could be a strike or a ball. That's when it comes down to umpire consistency. He's been calling that pitch today, and didn't there. So it should've been strike 3.
Not to mention, when a pitcher is dealing, he gets the borderline calls.

I' m not really bitching. I'm just saying the team is even better with a fresh melky and the speed of Gardner. Esp when the playoffs come in the late innings. Gardner could be what homer Busn was to the 90's team, as far as a wepon pinch runner.

Lol, what? I can't disagree with the article? Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it is gospel to me.
I don't buy that Boston is struggling mightly with who will be the 40th person on their roster for the rest of the season.
This has a minor, minor, minor impact on the Red Sox. However, who it really hurts is Carter and the Mets.
My point is not that what the Yankees did is illegal or against the rules of baseball, but it was a classless and petty move that ultimately has a huge impact on a 26 year old career minor leaguer that would have gotten some MLB AB's.
EDIT: ALSO, why do you think the Rangers or the Rays didn't claim Carter? They'd have more interest in hurting the Red Sox for the rest of the this season, wouldn't they?

Holy SHIT... Right off the bat, I was 100% sure that was gone. It had the sound and the look, I was sure of it. 9 times out of 10, that ball is out of the park... This fucking wind, man...
Gotta give A-Rod credit though. He's been huge with the walk-off HRs this year, and I really thought he just hit another. Unfortunatley, the weather wasn't on his side tonight.
