Come on H, for every Halladay and Greinke you give me, I could rattle off tons of names that go the other way. We're talking about Joba and Hughes here, so we'll just have to wait and see if Joba is in fact the non-asian Irabu or not later.

But everyone is acting like Joba has been bad as a starter and he hasn't. He has good numbers for his age and experience. He's been demonstrably better than Hughes starting. Joba's main problem thus far is going deep into games, and yes, it's a serious issue. But until his last couple starts his ERA was consistently under 4 and last year it was under 3. He had the best strikeout to innings pitched ratio on the staff, better than CC or Burnett. There is a lot of things to like about his performance thus far.

Now that I see Joba is starting tomorrow I think starting Aceves was a really stupid idea. You can't expect Joba to go deep into a game at this point. If he only goes 5 who is available to go the last 4?

Joba will through 7 innings tomorrow night, strikeout 6, give up 3 earned runs and throw 119 pitches.

Or he'll barely make it through the 5th. I don't know I think we're due for one of those flashes or brilliance tomorrow night.

Player A: 134.2 IP, 50 ER, 123 H, 62 BB, 138 K, 3.34 ERA

Player B: 146.1 IP, 65 ER, 122 H, 65 BB, 150 K, 4.00 ERA

The stats of two players in their first 24 starts. Remarkably similar but neither set of stats is particularly mind blowing. Player A is Joba Chamberlain. Player B is Tim Lincecum.

Which is not to say that Joba will ever be as good as Tim Lincecum. What it does say is that Joba is doing perfectly fine for his age and experience.

I hate that the Red Sox have K.C. to deal with before the break while the Yanks get the Angels, who always play them well. If only Tampa Bay would actually lose a game here or there I'd feel much better

Obviously loving the way theyre playing recently, but I just hope to stay healthy and keep the momentum up over the break. angels tigers jays could be a rough stretch.

Also, I almost think its a good thing about their 0'fer against the saux so far. The janks will even it back up. If they're tied up now theyre gonna separate in the second half.

Doctor Z
07-11-2009, 08:39 AM
Yeah...

I'm more pissed that we lost than anything. Considering how well we've played lately (13 of 15 before last night), it's frustrating as hell that all that winning only translated to sharing first place for about 20 minutes... especially when we were up 4-0 in our game, and the Sox JUST scraped past the fucking Royals 1-0. What the hell do we have to do to legitimately take over first?!

Doctor Z
07-11-2009, 08:41 AM
Oh right... win a SINGLE FUCKING GAME against the team ahead of us.

If we had just won TWO of 8... we'd be in first place. 2-and fucking-6 against the Red Sox this year would be good enough for first.

The 88 Mets won 10 of 11 vs the Dodgers in the Reg season.. Lost to them in the playoffs.

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish the yank's texeira, jeter and rivera the best of luck

Perhaps not, but they would probably have enough sense not to boo the best player on their team (if not the game) for popping out or hitting into a double play to end an inning or game as the Yankee fans do with ARod.

Let's not make this into a "who's the smarter fan base" competition because that's not what this is about. It's about the fuckin pissy, entitled, holier than thou attitude red sox fans sometimes carry.

Punched that up for ya a bit.

Interesting that you're jumping all over the Red Sox fans being pissy when this all started by me coming in and saying "Good luck to the yankees and the AL".

Who's actually being pissy? And seriously, yankee fans get upset EVERY game they lose because THEY'VE been raised to expect a winning season every year, in effect feeling entitled. That's human nature, pure and simple, and I can understand that. But it's time to get over it fellas, 9 seasons is quite a learning curve.

Before you go calling other fan bases names, I suggest you do what Michael Jackson suggested, and start with the fan in the mirror.

Completely agreed. Im 100% on francessa's side on this one and I always have been. He was electric in the 8th and the logical guy to replace Rivera...why fuck that up w/ something that just might work?

I think you can buy/trade for guys who can be servicable rotation guys - arroyo /vazquez/washburn. Id much rather have cc, aj, and vets who might not have great era's but are proven winners if we can shorten the game w/ a ridiculously good pen.

Its more than alarming that against the phils, saux, tigers, and angels the yanks are 5-15.

Also I think that if Girardi doesnt get out of the first round hes gone, and more than that- if hes embarrassed in 4 or 5 games in the ALCS against the saux he should be fired as well.

This has nothing to do with the actual people in Boston or in NY, I figured you'd be smart enough to see past that. Do you honestly believe in your heart that I dont think people can watch baseball games in their home markets? This has to do with the "out of market" fans so to speak. Since we dont have to take full responsibility for the things we say if we just include the word MANY before it, heres my experience with MANY out of market Red Sox fans.

"Fan": 'Oh yea, I love baseball too man.'

Me: "Cool, who's your favorite team?"

"Fan": 'Red Sox, big time'

Me: "Oh yea.....thats cool I guess. By the way, who's your starting shortstop?"

"Fan": 'ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......Nomar?'

Me: "He certainly is, good guess. Hey, did the Sox win last night by the way? I forgot to check the scores."

"Fan": 'Oh, i have no idea.'

Me: "No worries. Do you remember who they were playing?"

"Fan": 'No clue, sorry.'

And i apologize for using the term 'you' in describing the lame fan base that is "Red Sox Nation", I meant it in the editorial context not personal.

Well yeah...BOTH teams have bandwagon fans. Cmon.
Walk up to anyone in midtown manhattan wearing yankee apparel and ask them who the manager was before Joe Torre; youre gonna get some interesting answers.

And there are post 1996 Yankee fans: the ones who don't know who started SS before Jeter.

The Yanks have very consistent numbers this season against both power and finesse pitchers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=NYY&year=2009#power) as well as both ground ball and fly ball pitchers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=NYY&year=2009#gbfb). Against rookie pitchers their numbers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=NYY&year=2009#times) are basically right in line with those stats:

The record doesn't tell the whole story. What if most of those wins were won with the Yanks only Scoring 1 or 2 runs?

i don't know, but i assume from your research they were scoring about as many as in their other games. yes, the w/l record isn't everything, but the impression i got here and elsewhere was people think the yankees are losing to these pitchers and it's not the case. that was the assertion i was trying to disprove.

Fair enough. And yes, the stats show that they are hitting pretty much the same across the board in most situations, rookie pitchers included.

Everyone knows that Wins and losses and batting average are more than enough to evaluate any player.

And don't get me started on that worthless bum Adam Dunn. Not an ounce of clutch or grit in his entire body.

I judge a player on RBI and how I feel they perform in the clutch in the handful of games I've watched this year.
