my dog had a stroke on saturday night. we took her to the vet and he said strokes aren't as bad in dogs as they are in people and she would start to get better after about 48 hrs. she's been able to walk around a little today but still has no balance and tends to fall over. she is drinking a lot of water, but the problem is she won't eat her food. she is a 9 yr old golden retreiver.
would it be ok for me to cook up some ground beef, or some chicken and rice and mix a little into her food to get her to eat it again? i'm worried if she doesn't eat she'll continue to get weaker and possibly lose weight and get sick.
anyone ever had this happen to them?

chicken and rice is the best. don't mix it. just chicken and rice. Boil the chicken breasts and cut them into just about one inch cubes. It helps with digestion.
Sorry to hear that. It is always hard when your beloved pet has health issues.

If you want him to eat/put on weight, here is a recipe that is often used for dogs:

My eskie was a picky eater, I used to feed him homemade food... I would fill a pot with water and boil chicken thighs in the water, with carrots and celery. Once the chicken is cooked, I stripped it off the bone. Then add rice to the water and cook until the rice is done.

HGH helped my dad after his stroke. got to keep an eye on them though, they get lost easy after the stroke.

i once thought my old dog had a stroke because he was walking all retarded and sideways one day...turned out he just had an ear infection. it was very scary

If I was sick and dizzy enough to be falling over I don't think I'd want to eat much either- glad to hear your dog is doing better!

thanks,
she was MUCH better today. she had a little spring in her step this morning. she's still not 100% but i think she'll recover nicely in the next few days. we went for a short walk and her balance is improving and her appetite is slowly coming back.

At the risk of getting the shit kicked out of me,STI has a frequent poster who goes by ELDOGSTAR.He is a proffesional dog trainer and is quite knowledgable in all things canine. He is a wealth of information and has answered many questions from me in the past.
I'm glad your dog is doing better. If you need any advice pop over and ask EL.He will be happy to help if he can.

He doesn't have a forum because STI doesn't have 1,785,962 members like .net.There is a "Questions For Eldogstar" thread though.
Sorry for your loss.I felt like an animal for never shedding a tear when any of my grandparents died. When my German Shepherd died though I cried like a twelve year old rape victim.
