View Full Version : Rock and Roll Psalms
Fugitive

The Psalms in the Bible are a set of sacred poems that have been collected into sets of Judeo-Christian scripture. The word "psalms" is derived from a Greek word meaning "Songs Sung to a Harp." Psalms have also gone in the other direction, serving as the lyrics or inspriation for raggae songs and classical music.
I was thinking about this close relationship between Psalms and music and wondered, could there be modern day ROCK AND ROLL PSALMS collected together the same way? A lot of people have taken comfort and inspiration from rock lyrics over the years--they've helped a lot of us through hard times. If we collected all those together in one place, that could be a tremendous morale booster that would get people in a mood to support one another and be creative and productive.
A couple of examples of what might make good ROCK AND ROLL PSALMS--
An obvious one form the BEATLES:
And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow
Let it be
Or--more recently--the WHITE STRIPES offered a Rock and Roll psalm about how to think about our problems in the song LITTLE ACORNS:
And another thing
You should have known from the start
The problems in hand
Are lighter than at heart
I could go on, but I'm gonna go ahead and throw it out there--any nominations for inclusion in the ROCK AND ROLL PSALMS book?

Because the Bible teaches through fear (in parts:)
Pink Floyd - Dogs:
"And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone."

You, who are on the road
Must have a code
That you can live by.
And so, become yourself
Because the past
Is just a goodbye.

When I was back there in seminary school
There was a person there
Who put forth the proposition
That you can petition the lord with prayer
Petition the lord with prayer
Petition the lord with prayer
You cannot petition the lord with prayer!

Love this thread. There are many parallels between rock and Psalms already. Bob Dylan is the master of these. Great though.

May the good lord be with you
Down every road you roam
And may sunshine and happiness
Surround you when youre far from home
And may you grow to be proud
Dignified and true
And do unto others
As youd have done to you
Be courageous and be brave
And in my heart youll always stay
Forever young, forever young
Forever young, forever young ...........You with young ones will understand someday..

My time coming, any day, don't worry bout me, no
Been so long I felt this way, ain't in no hurry, no
Rainbows end down that highway where ocean breezes blow
My time coming, voices saying, they tell me where to go
Don't worry bout me, no no, don't worry bout me, no
And I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go.
California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine

People don't know about the
things I say and do
They don't understand about
the shit that I've been
through
It's been so long since I've been home
I've been gone, I've been
gone for way too long
Maybe I forgot all things I miss
Oh somehow I know there's
more to life than this
I said it too many times
And I still stand firm
You get what you put in
And people get what they deserve
Still I ain't seen mine
No I ain't seen mine
I've been giving just ain't been gettin
I've been walking that there line
So I think I'll keep a walking
With my head held high
I'll keep moving on and only God knows why
Only God
Only God
Only God knows why, why, why, why
Only God...knows...why, why, why
Only God knows why
Take me to the river edge
Take me to the river, hey hey hey

And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
Philosophers and ploughmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
You can be the captain
I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart

I'm going away
Where you will look for me
Where I'm going you cannot come
No one's ever gonna take my life from me
I lay it down
A ghost is born
A ghost is born
A ghost is born

"We all got holes to fill
Them holes are all that's real.
Some fall on you like a storm,
Sometimes you dig your own.
The choice is yours to make,
Time is yours to take;
Some dive into the sea,
Some toil upon the stone.
To live is to fly
Low and high,
So shake the dust off of your wings
And the sleep out of your eyes"
-Townes Van Zandt, To Live Is To Fly

No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke but uh
But you and I weve been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hours getting late

Say "I will", for you know you can.
Look for the best in every man.
Meet each thundering knock-out blow,
come back with a smile cuz you know
you get the best of the whole damn show.
That's pep!
