As a music lover, I will be out in support of Record Store Day (http://www.recordstoreday.com/CustomPage/614) on APRIL 18th. There is still nothing quite like searching through thousands of CDs, Vinyl Records and DVDs to find a jewel.

Lots of artists will be releasing special vinyl, DVDs, CD's and other things at your local record store on Record Store Day.

Check out the website and see what Record Store Day is all about.

Long live the Independent Record Store!

Don't forget to check out the participating stores with the link on that website.

We've lost a couple of local independents in the past year. I really do love the joy of a Tuesday afternoon getaway break to the record store to check out the new releases.

I will be out that day, cash in hand.

I'm amazed small record shops still exist, but I'm glad they do. Nothing made me happier than seeing Tower Records go belly up. If only people would patronize these local stores instead of using Amazon or iTunes we might actually see a resurgence in music.

Once the small shops and independent labels go, it's all boy bands and techno pop.

I hope you're all happy.

Baltimore might be The independent record store city. I know of three high quality places in the city itself, and there is also a small chain called Record and Tape Traders around the city and suburbs.

I got this in an email from My Morning Jacket about record store day:

hello friends. we are proud to announce and release a lil live ep that was recorded right in our very own hometown of louisville, ky. a few songs were taken from our in-store appearence at our beloved and fabled record haven "ear-x-tacy" and a few of them were taken from our concert at the fabled "waterfront park." see if you can guess which is from which. we are excited to make this a special release that you can only get at your favorite local independent record store, as now more than ever we all need to take the time to celebrate what our favorite local record stores and businesses mean to us - the value of community/human to human non- internet related physical and spiritual contact and supporting the hardworking people in your community who strive everyday to keep it unique and keep it local. we are fortunate in our travels to get to see many wonderful things, but one of the most distressing things is the increasing "normalization" of the world and how all these places are starting to look the same- everywhere you look more and more towns are starting to be filled with the same gigantic corporations, and while some of these huge companies undoubtably provide valuable services, it is so important that we realize that it is our local businesses and people (and natural landscapes, but thats a different letter) that are what make different towns worth coming to...things you can only get in one place, made and sold by people who believe in what they are doing...people who are trying to keep good weirdness alive in this crazy dome. god* bless all of you, and god* bless the world and all that kinda sh*t.

-yer pals, my morning jacket

p.s.- *the word "god*" is used here meaning anything you want it to mean and is a trademark of globo-chem worldwide.

The abridged version is that they'll be releasing an EP on Record Store Day only available at independent record stores.

One other thing I miss about living in CT: Cutler's Records in New Haven (http://www.cutlers.com/). Next door was Rhyme's Records which sold the hardcore, alternative and best of all -- bootlegs.

And for HTG, the Cutler's Yelp review (http://www.yelp.com/biz/cutlers-records-and-tapes-new-haven).

It seems weird that J&R Music in NYC is participating. I guess it technically qualifies as an independent, but it just doesn't seem that way because J&R carries a bigger variety of stuff than most Best Buys.

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. (In other words, we’re dealing with real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).

I guess they get around the "at least 50% music retail" requirement because the City Hall location (which is nearly an entire city block) is divided up into different stores, and music has its own store.

Isn't their City hall location their only location?

I don't think places like J&R and PC Richard should get lumped in with the "corporate giants" no matter how big they have gotten. They are for the most part local, family owned and operated businesses.

I checked the website. There's a J&R Express on 34th Street. Did there used to be some other locations?

just outside macy's cellar bathrooms, there's a sign for J&R music pointing up a flight of stairs.
im assuming thats the 34th street location.

We have an old fashioned private record store on the local college campus. I frequent this place fairly often and I will participate in this event. I am amazed the guy still survives but he told me he trades and sells vinyl all the time. When I was a teenager I used to practically live in record stores and book stores.

I was at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ this morning and the place was hopping.

Lots of great stuff to be had and they were playing the new Bob Dylan record that hasn't been released yet over the sound system.

Hope you all got out to support!

I tried to support, but the one independent record store in my town blew it! They didn't have the new MMJ or the Wilco dvd. I guess they're really independent.

I did my part. Unfortunately, no MMJ as I stated yesterday because my store's distributor (Electric Fetus in Minneapolis) decided to keep them all for their store. But I did buy:

Wilco DVD
Iron and Wine CD
Pavement live LP
Dylan 7"
Whiskeytown 7:
Andrew Bird/Loney Dear 7"
Flaming Lips 7"
Jenny Lewis 7"
