View Full Version : Michael Jackson or Prince

As brought up briefly on Thursday's Show:
Until I see Michael Jackson pick up a guitar and shred like this, Prince will forever own him.

Michael has a ton of great music from the Jackson 5 days ad hist first 3 solo albums, but Prince is just more of an amazing talent.

Other than the symbol name, how else is Prince weird? Likes hot chicks as opposed to boys, seems like case closed

Anyone who says Michael Jackson has never listened to a Prince album.
I know Prince is a capable guitarist. I've been listening to him for 25 years. To call him one of the greats though?

To call him just "capable" or "competent" is ridiculous. One doesn't have to been continually innovative to be a fantasic guitarist and one of the best. It's a very finite instrument in terms of what "new" can be done with it.

Finite? Not at all.
And I don't judge how "good" a guitarist is by how many scales he knows or how many notes he can cram into a solo. Sorry. It's got to have something different.
I'd rather hear B.B. King bend one note than hear Yngwie Malmsteen play 30. It just HITS me.

I never said that! I LOVE the guy! He was the last man on the planet keeping funk alive for awhile.
In all my years of hanging out with and talking to fellow guitar players, however, I've never heard ONE say "I've got to learn that Prince solo!"
I've never had the desire to either.

Prince is not a blues or rock guitarist. Look to the more jam band oriented. He is also emulated among modern folk musicians (ani, kaki king, peter mulvey, etc)
Ah! So folk is where all of today's guitar heroes are hiding out!

I know you meant that as a dig, but the most impressive movement in guitar right now is percussive guitar, which is snuggly in the realm of folk. More proof that outside of classic rock, blues, and r & b, you really don't know what you are talking about.
Besides, Richard Thompson and Yorma Kaukonen are still putting out amazing work while the Rolling Stones havent done anything worthwhile in at least 20 years. Kaki King is one of the most amazing guitarists out there, not to mention folk-bluesmen like Medeski Martin and Wood or Marcia Ball. Folk music has always had superior guitarists, just because you havent heard of them doesnt mean that they dont exist.

What are the good/great albums each did?
Jackson has Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad (although the last is debateable).

I think Musicology is WAY overrated. It was a welcome change of pace from the mostly shit albums he had been putting out, but there's only like 5 songs on there I really like. The rest is really just bland and forgettable to me. Same with 3121, though at least that has "Black Sweat."

I prefer it when an amazing pop song is sung by someone who doesn't like they're gargling small dogs and the awesome music hasn't been turned into a big batch of kinda catchy sludge.
I can only guess this all based on the confusing feelings that overwhelmed Gvac when he was confronted with this:

Michael Jackson is a performer. He has a lot of help writing his music and although I'm not 100% sure, is probably given songs to sing by people. He sings very well but it's not his work all the time.
Prince sings and plays the guitar very well. He is also a very impressive song writer.
That just puts Prince over the top for me.
If this were a "Who Raises the Best Bee Keepers" or "Who Has Slept With The Cast of Stand By Me" competition, I would HAVE give it to Michael.

MJ is a bad muthafucka though. NOBODY else can do what he does vocally on, say, "PYT". Nobody. Maaaybe Freddie. And even that's a maybe. Nobody can go from baby-voice to powerhouse without even flinching like MJ.
Having said that, Prince is an alien. If you roll deep through his catalog you'll see a guy who really can create.

.
Ya think Prince could hammer that vocal?
I disagree.
At least... not without going into falsetto.
MJ's vocal midrange is 2nd to none on that song. He starts out rather "wimpy" and adds more and more bite as the song goes on. He starts adding a little more rasp with each passing line (thanks for the guidance, Quincy).
Then he hits his stride. By the end, he's wailing. Full-voice.... tons of power.... tons of affect & style. If you've ever heard another vocalist attempt to sing it, their limitations are immediately brought to the surface.
Prince is the shit, but his vox are always rather slight. Amazing singer in his own right but, that high-midrange just isn't there.
Again, this is a tough one for me because I love just about everything those two have done. Even (especially!) their lesser known works.

It's the benchmark.
I'll assume Gvac's "fezident is mentally unstable" thread will be appearing shortly.

That's the beauty of MJ's performance.
Much like Eddie makes playing guitar sound so amazingly fluid.
That vocal is a masterwork. There are, literally, thousands of various nuances that he's adding almost with each word but, he makes it sound effortless.
It's the benchmark.
Yea sorry bro. Like I know what "moves" a person is a personal thing, but I just don't see it in this one. I've been moved by other Michael Jackson songs more, not just other artists too.

But you DO all realize that vocal tracks are heavily heavily sculpted, right?
There are many many many times when a one ONE SYLLABLE word is actually a comp of three different takes. This is common.
You do realize that people (like myself) sit in the studio for many many hours & days just cobbling together a single phrase, right?
You are aware that producers spend MONTHS comp'ing a vocal?
The layers go into the hundreds on a 4 min pop tune. And that's not including virtual tracks. My Chemical Romance has over 190 tracks running simultaneously. Over 80 of them are vocal. These things are heavily heavily comp'd.
Engineers will take the tiny "tick" of your lips parting from one word, and add it to another.
Are you saying that Quincy Jones, or Mutt Lange, or Rob Cavallo are wasting their time? Or better yet... are "mentally unstable".
A simple chord on a guitar is sometimes recorded a single note at a time, stacked together, so every note in the chord is heard at the same time, rather than simply strummed. (this is so the chord "explodes" at once, instead of hearing the teeeeeny bit of time it takes for the pick to go from the first string to the 2nd string. Your ear DOES hear these things.... regardless of if you're aware of it.
I was at the 5.1 remixing sessions for THRILLER about 3 weeks ago. The engineers are STILL raving about the production work that went into that record. The fact that average listeners are unaware of the painstaking process that created it is a testimony to how well they did their jobs.

See, that kinda shit doesn't impress me.
When that much is being done to a track, where does the machine end and the artist begin? You could make ME sound like a popstar with enough layers, tracks and filters.

fezident is terrifying.
Next we're going to find out "Leave Me Alone" contains the code for Enlightenment.

Honestly, even taking away all the weirdness that they both have, Prince is far and away the winner. But MJ does have the better selling album and wins solidly in a contest of weirdness
Prince has a new album coming out, but only at Target: https://www.lotusflow3r.com/th3b0mb.html Is it good to have an exclusive deal like this?

I love Off the Wall and a lot of Thriller. I also love a bunch of the Jackson Five records. That being said, Prince wins easily. He is a creature sent from a distant galaxy to fuck the face of rock and roll.
