Is there any style of music that was better when it was first came about or has it all improved with time?
I think most "original" rock music doesn't hold up but most older blues sounds cooler than most of the new stuff.

i think most of the time
You are right, the Roots are better than any other music. What they are doing as Fallon's house band is anybody's guess.

There's probably never been a statement on this board that I disagree with more.
Country music.
The current version couldn't be any worse or more bastardized from its original "roots".

A-fucking-men.
About 15 years ago MCA put out an incredible album simply entitled "Rhythm, Country, and Blues." They paired up country acts with soul singers, and you had combinations like Lyle Lovett and Al Green, Conway Twitty and Sam Moore, and George Jones and B.B. King.
It's one of my favorite albums of all time.
There was a PBS documentary that accompanied the release of the disc, and I remember the soul singers saying they paid very close attention to country music back in the day because they viewed it as "white people's soul music." I thought that was an amazing description.
What a shame that it's become bubble gum pop with a southern accent.

Country music might be the defining "gotten shittier over time" music. As far as rock I just feel like you take Peggy Sue and compare it to something like earlier Aerosmith and Peggy Sue sounds silly. Not saying I'm right just interested in other opinions. My grandmother thought it was ALL shit since Glen Miller.

Compare Charlie Parker and Thelonius Monk to the experimental jazz and jazz fusion stuff today, no contest. And then there's smooth jazz, ugh.
As far as country goes - if you compare it to the CMA stuff, yeah the old stuff was much better. However, I think "alt country" holds its own. It's a progressive sound that stays true to its roots. The problem is that it often gets lumped in with the over the top, "irreverent" crap (Southern Culture on the Skids for example) and music that is really the CMA sound but the performer isn't quite marketable enough.

Rocket 88 was charted on the R&B section. It came out in 1951 and is considered by many to be the first rock n' roll song. The guitar is great on this song. Jackie Brenston sang and Ike Turner was involved. It was his own band the Kings of Rhythm that recorded Rocket 88 for Chess Records. The song still holds up.
And it's obvious where its roots lay.

I don't think you can improve on this. I even like the poor audio quality.

i've been trying to think of examples where the "roots" of any music is worse than current
the only thing that comes to mind, only because it was an R&F discussion, is "Van Halen". Ron said that everyone who came after Van Halen was influenced by him..if that was the case than its gotta be them. I can't listen to any Van Halen music, i think its cheesey and stupid. All VanHalen songs sound like a bad song out of an 80s movie to me
