McShane is the coolest in "Sexy Beast". The scene where he not only tells Gal that his cut of the caper will be 10 pounds, he makes Gal make change when all he has is a twenty is just brilliant.

not really america, but it is in a different reality.
As was mentioned before it is based on the Book of Kings in the old testament- the story of David & Goliath, and the king- Saul (and Sammuel, the prophet)
some of it was filmed in NY; the kings's palace is actually a museum Sands Point on Long Island.
I dvr'd it; I'm watching some of it now.

summary of show
http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/06/nbcs-kings-scri.html
Very well written script by Michael Green (episodes of "Heroes," "Everwood") recasts the Biblical story of King David in modern times. Sort of. The “Kings” universe is essentially the United States, only ruled by a corporate-backed monarchy. This wildly fictional setting is the show’s greatest challenge -- to not let the strangeness of its parallel world distract viewers from its story and characters.
The casting of Ian McShane as the country's beloved ruler, King Silas, is perfect, and one wonders if some of his dialog was rewritten once he was brought on board.
"Speak in riddles, Reverend, you’re liable never to get your point across," Silas growls, and one can hear that regal "Deadwood" thug Al Swearengen.
The story (skip this graph to avoid general outline spoilers) tells of a noble young solider, David, who rescues the king’s son from captivity in a foreign land (slaying a high-tech Goliath is involved). Declared a hero, David is brought home to the king’s palace, falls for a goodhearted princess, alienates the king’s ambitious heir and is thrust into a web of rival agendas. Clearly, Green is keeping the story beats traditional here, which helps offset the oddness of the setting.

I watched this last night, and surprisingly-- I liked it and am looking forward to the next ep.
It's not in my top 5 tivo requests, but it's definitely requested, mostly cuz I think if I miss an ep I'll be lost.
Loved McShane in Deadwood, and he doesnt disappoint here.
It takes ALOT of belief suspension, and the acting/writing is only so-so, but it's simply enjoyable and pretty watchable.

I watched the pilot and first regular episode last night and today - so far I think this is a great show. Of course, I really like offbeat stuff like this as a general rule (alternate realities, retelling mythology, etc.).
Ian McShane is great as King Silas and Chris Egan does a solid job as David (even if he over-acts a touch now and then).

I don't know where Gilboa is, but I don't think it is in the Middle East. The kingdom is supposed to be an analog for the United States and Shiloh is like New York. However, the use of Old Testament names for locations/nations makes it a little confusing.
I have been searching for info but so far I haven't found anything about geography or the planet in Kings. It could conceivably have different continents, weather, etc. and not be a direct representation of Earth as we know it.
I guess they will eventually reveal that stuff.

Anyone know the Kings and Deadwood connection?
First you have Swearengen and the style of speech, then you add Langriche and finally Silas Adams this week?
I can't see any crossovers on the writing/ directing/ casting side. Maybe the EP was a big fan?
Any ideas?

I don't think there is any obvious crossovers, outside of maybe appreciating the same actors.
I just finished watching the 7/11 episode and more than ever I appreciate the quality of this series. Maybe it's just as well to look at it as a long miniseries. It seems that there is maybe 1 episode that was changed/pulled. The next 2 episodes will be the last-

Out of curiosity though, did they ever explain what the daughter's secret was? I don't recall which episode it was, but there was a scene with Silas and the daughter and he basically implied to her that if she didn't stay away from David then it would be a shame if he found out about her secret.

She had a childhhod cancer that should have been terminal, but made a "miraculous" recovery after praying to god and promising all of her happiness and love only to him- ie, she'd never fall in love or marry.

yes, I agree that the last 3 episodes have been great.
For those who gave up on it, you should look at it as if it was a mini series.
the acting is still very good, and it is an interesting premise.
I do sometimes get tweaked though when it varies from the biblical line
(no daughter, Jonathan and David best "friends") but that is very very minor.

Watched 5 episodes of this over the weekend getting me up to #9.
Kings is really really good. It's a modern day fantasy with some wonderful acting. The only reason I can see for it doing so badly and being canceled is that it's just too fancy for regular network TV folks. Everything about it would turn people off. With all of the speeches given and the style of speaking they have it is just too much for the public to handle.
Good stuff.
How closely does the plot of the show parallel The Bible?
How closely does the plot of the show parallel The Bible?
the main points of the bible story are King Saul (Silas), who god once favored, than no more. Sammuel is god's prophet. Saul's son in the bible is Jonathan, who befriends David, and David, rather than Jonathan, becomes king as is god's will.
in the TV story a lot follows this, except instead of Jonathan being the friend to David it is a daughter, while Jonathan/Jack in the tv story wants the power himself.
I watched the last episode, and again, I'm sad this is no more- especially since they basically set up for a 2nd season.
