My dad called me just a little bit ago and told me that my cousins wife took her 4 year old daughter to her doctor this morning cause she had frequent urination problems. Immediately, they rushed her to the Emergency Room downtown and admitted her.....they checked her blood sugar level and it was off the charts.

here she is....

My cousins little girl is a full blown diabetic.

I'm looking for symptoms and things that can be beneficial to my Cousin....I know this isn't a good thing at all to hear, but how bad can it be? I dunno if I'm just so much in shock that I'm just not seeing the worst part of something like this on a child or this is something that can be controlled......I'm heartbroken.

Anyone been through this?

im very sorry to hear about your niece. im glad they could figure out what the problem was. i dont have any experience with it myself, but i had to be checked a lot because there is history of diabetes in my family. from what i do know, they have made some pretty drastic improvements in dealing with diabetes. hopefully she can overcome this and still live a very full life. and, she is a very adorable little girl.

Sorry to hear.

My nephew has it and wears an insulin pump. The beginning was a little rough (mostly on my sis and brother inlaw) till he and his parents got accustomed to everything but once they got used to the pump and a revised diet it really hasn't been a problem for him. he's about 15 now and has had it for as long as I can remember with no real issues.

I wish everyone involved all the best.

im diabetic. its not the end of the world and you are lucky shes young enough when diagnosed that shes not set in her bad habits like i was. it will be easier to control. the insulin pump is great, im working towards it myself. she will need to count carbs, watch her sugar intake, check her blood sugar and probably take 2-4 shots a day, which i can testify that the needles are so thin that she will barely feel it. im sorry to hear this happened and it is a pain in the ass to manage, but it is manageable and she can live a long healthy and enjoyable life with diabetes. PM me if you have any questions and i will do my best to answer. but i am not a doctor. go to dr. steve for that shit!

Is she Type 1 or Type 2? Type one is usually Juvenile Diabetes and has to be treated with insulin, type 2 is brought on by diet habits. At 4 I'd say it's a better chance of Type 1.

Here's the leading website in research and information for the subject.

My sister developed juvinal diabetes at about that same age, in the mid/late '70's way before the insulin pumps of today. She's now 37 y/o with two kids and so far none of the problems that can come with the disease. Monitored and managed carefully, she should have a long and healthy life.
