so my computer is acting screwy since getting a virus. ive tried all the anti virus and spyware programs and it still hasn't solved the problem. i would like to reformat my computer but have never done it on my own. i don't feel like paying a shitload of money for someone else to do it when it seems can be done on my own. i found this tutorial and was wondering what some of the computer savvy people around here thought about it.

So you want to start from scratch, just because you like the brand new feeling of a freshly reformatted pc? Or has spyware and viruses made your pc virtually unusable? Then the following tutorial will help you reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows. I personally reformat my HDD and reinstall windows at least once every 3 months. Please note, I am not responsible for any damage although I don't see how you can possibly damage anything whilst reformatting. Follow these steps exactly and you should be fine.

Step 1: Make sure you have your Windows XP disk. I personally delete everything I don’t need, and uninstall all programs that I don’t use. I then make a list of all the programs I still have installed and download all the installers I will need. Also download Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware but do not install them. I then backup all my important data and all the installers onto a portable hard drive – if you don’t have one you can build one (see HERE how to build your own external hard drive cheaply) or you can use DVD’s or CD’s. Make sure you have everything backed up and then disconnect the portable hard drive.

Step 2: Insert your windows disk into the Master CD drive (if you have more than one) and turn the computer off. Make sure you are disconnected from any networks. You will need to have your cd drive selected as your first boot device. If it not already selected, you will need to go into your bios and set the boot priority to cd/hdd, then with your Windows cd in your cd drive, save and exit bios.

Step 3: Turn on your computer. A screen will come up saying “Press any key to boot from disk”. Press any key (where’s the “Any” key gone?!). Now wait about 10seconds for the setup utility to be loaded. When asked if you want to set up or repair, hit Enter to set up Windows. Read the license agreement and hit F8 if you agree. If the setup program detects an existing installation of Windows and asks if you want to repair it, hit Esc to skip the repair. The setup program will ask you where to install Windows. Highlight the existing "C: Partition1" partition and hit D to delete it. Hit L to confirm. Next, hit Enter to install Windows on the "Unpartitioned Space". Format the space as NTFS - You will get an option to choose full or quik format. My experience is that quick format is for disk that have previously formatted. If the disk has not been formatted, then you will have to use the standard format option. Usually you will get a popup message "This disk can not be quick formatted" or something along that line. Then continue the installation. Please note: During the installation process, your computer will reboot. You will then see a message to press any key to boot from cd. Do not press any key a second time, otherwise the installation will start from scatch again. Complete the next several screens on the setup process and make sure you do not leave the administrator password blank. After following these steps, setup should be complete.

Step 4: Firstly you should install your antivirus software, Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware. Also enable the windows firewall by going to Start>Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Connections (icon on the bottom-right)>Right-click the Local Area Connection>Properties>Advanced tab>Check the box next to "Protect my computer and network...">OK. After this has been done, install all updates from the Microsoft website (including windows XP service Pack 2). Then install all drivers from your motherboard utilities CD. Now it is time to install your programs.

Step 5: Enjoy the brand new feeling of your Reformatted PC

the only problem i have is that i couldn't find any disk for having driver utilities in any of my computer stuff, just the windows xp disk. do i need to have a driver cd to complete a reformatting?

I would make a slipstreamed SP 3 disk if I were you, but I am a geek. It makes things much easier and will include pretty much anything that you would need to get the machine running.

http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstream-service-pack-3-into-your-windows-xp-installation-cd

It will really save you the headache of going through hours of patching post install. I have a SP2 slipstreamed disk I use when I format (haven't had to since SP3 came out) and I am so glad I did it. It's really easy to make and will make everything better when you go to do the format.

Do you have a pretty standard PC? If so Windows should have everything you need. Driver cds are just needed if you have some wonky hardware but as long as you can get online after the format you really need nothing these days and can download everything.

you will be able to get all your drivers off the internet.

If you so happen to have a pc that needs a driver for the network card you can go to a friends house and put them on a flash drive.

Most of the time you can go to the manufacturer's website to get all the drivers you need.

I reformatted a friend laptop and thats what i did. I didnt need a driver for the lan connection to work.

now that i finally read all that:

Just take what you REALLY need off the pc. then get a xp cd insert it and follow directions. easy as PI

Have you already reformatted it? If you have not I have a ton of advice how to save it. I just did so on my gs's laptop and saved her a bunch of lost data and time and she had 3 trojans.

Yeah it has set up residence in your restore file, its why windows suck, they are popular enough for people to write viruses to infect, unless I missed it, do you know what virus it was?

The short answer is no.
WinXP has enough drivers in it to run your LAN card (if it is part of the motherboard) which means you will have internet once the OS install is over.
If you have a "major brand" PC (Dell, Gateway Acer, HP, etc) most of those companies have the drivers online for each computer they have sold.
For instance, Dell includes a "service tag" sticker on each PC and laptop they sell. When you go to the customer support section of Dell's website, it will ask you for that service tag. Once you have entered it, it will display all the drivers for that machine. Download them one by one and reinstall.

Do you have a disk partition software disk? If you do, that is what I would recommend. Blow away all partitions on your drive and then do the install.

BTW, you running NTFS or FAT32?

I was just curious. When you go to format the drive before install, the WinXP disk will ask you whether you want it to be Fat32 or NTFS. I recommend NTFS-the individual file permissions utility is quite nice.

when i start the comp with the xp disk in, it says to press any button to start setup, then during the setup installation, it says one of the sys files is corrupt and that's as far as it will take me

The disk is either dirty or damaged. Clean the disk and try again. It's not reading the file correctly.

If the disk is damaged, you can try to call Microsoft and get a new one. I did-it took a while for a techinician to make the call, but when he did, a new one (with a fresh key) was in my mailbox 4 days later.

Can I borrow your XP disc when you're done? (http://ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77913) It probably wouldn't help, though. I still can't get it to boot from a CD, but I'm thinking of wiping out the hard drive with a non-important comp and going from there.

I'm just glad that one isn't mine. But I've never had my ass kicked by a comp, and it's making me very very angry. You don't want to make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

so i did this, and it seemed to work until this screen popped up:

STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll

any idea on what this is or how to get past it?

No, XP is always NTFS, nothing less.

Since this is likely happening during load up and since NTdll is an important system file you may be screwed if it will not load correctly. I would either get MS to send you a new disk or do a google search and dl the file into your system32 folder. It is likely easier though to get a new disk, torrent one and tell MS that your disk is not recognizing the key you entered which they will give you a new one, or try the very hard way like I described with replacing files.

so the reformatting is working correctly as of now. i ran the install again and it came up with no problems. i deleted the partition and it is now formatting a new partition. let's all hope this keeps working.

i dump my drive at least once every year. i have a tendency to go where im not supposed to be, so i do this to keep my drive clean.
all i do is drop in the system recovery disk, and reboot. keep clicking next and voila- about 2 hours of work is what it takes for me to reformat and set up all my proggies and settings.

i also wish MS had an "up-to-date" option for their updating system.

meaning, i wish i could up front agree to all the bullshit, and walk away from the comp as it installs the updates, reboots, and continues until its current.
nothing worse than having to sit there while its updating, because it asks you if you wish to reboot now a couple of times during the updating.
