I might be selling mine.
FYI this will play from a FAT formatted HDD.
I had a external sata drive (750gb) to use with it. which i also am looking to sell. no HDD though. just the sata external enclosure.

I'd say just go get yourself a PS3. I know it seems pricey considering what you're looking for...but that's basically all you really need for the full package.

it would be even better if i could just upload the movie onto a flash drive and play it off that
does the Philips DVP5982 DVD allow you play video off a flash drive?

Phillips makes a great dvd player. I bought mine years ago solely for playing divx files. It is fantastic.

For playing files off USB it's really good - it's played just about everything I've thrown at it. For playing DVDs though mine is so horribly slow that I want it to die so I can replace it with something better. Retail DVDs take up to 45 seconds to load up on mine before even getting to the FBI splash screen. The remote leaves a lot to be desired (then again I probably shouldn't expect a lot out of a <$50 unit.
Once you get it discs going the picture is great - more than adequate upscaling.

Check some more into the LG.
get model number and stuff.
then go over to avsforum and search for that number and then google.
See what files it supports. I know philips and divx are in cohootz but im not sure who LG is paired with you know (Windows media stuff maybe(but i think thats sony))
Other than that look alright.
also see if it's firmware can be upgraded like the philips.

stick with phillips for divx, they'll play almost anything.
If you don;t want to wait you can get the newer ones with usb, hdmi, 1080p upscaling(useless imo) for less than 50$ at costco. they're kickass
