Note to self - Never piss off a Turkish barber. May result in slit jugular followed by face flambé' and Vulcan neck pinch.

Turkish shaves... They give you that fresh "sucker" look.

I think I would rather get a Colombian Necktie.

I got a shave at the barber today and it was great even though there as no threading or flames involved. Ilove the hot towel on the face and the face rub.

Should I be getting an erection watching that? :smoke:

No savage is coming near my neck with a straight razor nor my face with a flaming torch. I could use a neck rub tough.

^^^ ditto to all of that

I occasionally shave with a straight blade at home but frankly its a pain in the ass, 99% of the time is a merkur safety razor that does a kick ass job

Weird, you'd think a professional could get the job done right with just the straight razor alone.

Personally, I like a Merkur HD razor with a turkish Derby double edge blade, badger brush & some quality soap or cream, preferably Tabac, Proraso or Derby, with some Tabac or Musgo Real aftershave, maybe some Skin Bracer or English Leather if I'm feeling like an old man in the morning.

Motherfuck a Mach3, the Gillette double edge razors are still tops.

Biggest problem with getting a Turkish Shave? They only give them in Turkish Prisons.

It does look pretty cool. The threading part looked a little painful. That guy was wincing pretty hard core.

Side note: Does a shaving video really need the same sound bed as a W hotel lobby?

damn, i thought this thread was about turkish slaves (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E03E1DE143FEE3ABC4C52DFB166838B 699FDE).

OK Safety Razor guys, I need some info. I have thought about trying one for a while because I have sensitive skin and have traditionally had trouble with disposable razors. From what I have read an old fashioned safety razor may just be the ticket.

So what is the best Shaving Cream to use with it? From a practical use standpoint is it worth it to go mug and brush or will canned shaving cream do the job well?

And RE: the video - what the hell was going on with the flame and then the thread/rubber band/whatever that was?

It seems to be used to singe the fine hairs on your ears, or if you have ear hair (I am starting to get some). I actually found it by searching for a way to get rid of the hair I am getting.

Check this out, there are some cultures, including African American that still cut hair with the singeing method. Basically the flames quickly curl the hair or cut it off completely.

Also, here (http://haircuttingfun.livejournal.com/tag/hair+singeing) is the blog of a woman who had her hair cut and they singe the ends of the hair to seal them. Apparently it makes the hair very smooth and silky.

As much as I love getting a shave with a straight razor (especially for the back of the neck), part of me is aways nervous that I'll be the unlucky person in the chair when the barber finally flips out and starts going Sweeney Todd on everyone.

Funny thing about sensitive skin is that almost everyone seems to have it. The mug & brush works better for me only because I'm putting a bit of effort into what I'm doing. The main thing is to wash your face with a hot towel, rub the cream in well, shave with as little pressure as possible, wash your face with an ice cold towel afterwards.

I got my main razor from http://www.shavingessentials.net/ (They throw in a shit load of random samples, unfortunately half of the ones I got were rose scented & went right into the trash). Old Gillette's are all over ebay, but too many of them are way overpriced. The problem with all of this shit is that there's a lot of variables, it takes a bit of effort to figure out what works well... but once I figured out what worked for me, shaving became an enjoyable every day thing instead of an awful twice a week/month experience.

The Merkur HD razor goes for about $30, and I got a box of 100 Derby blades with a tube of cream at shavingfactory.com for less than $20 (with a coupon code I can't remember). The double edge blades sold in most stores are all made by the same company, they're mediocre at best.

if you want to read what the really obsessive people are into, check out the badgerandblade.com forums.

sorry for the long post, gonna go fuck my face up with a straight razor for no good reason now.

I can't say that I have sensitive skin so not sure my comments are going to be of much value but the reason I switched from disposable razors to a safety blade is because I'm a fricking simian and grow a 5:00 shadow by noon. If I skip even one day safety razors clog up way too quickly and its a pain in the ass to have to rinse after making a 1" path. That said since going this route I've yet to have an ingrown hair after shaving. As for what's the "best" soap unfortunately the advice is to keep trying a brand till you find one that works. Personally I get the best results from Acca Kappa Ceder.

The other online store you might want to check out is www.mensessentials.com

IMO mediocre is a far too charitable way to describe Gillette, et. al that you'd find in walmart, etc. I've tried them once and would have had better results shaving with a cat's crusty asshole.

Well IMO the best cream is to lather yourself up some yourself.. It may take a little to make some but its way better than anything out of the can.. I use a comination of a shaving soap and cream... You can find many video's on YouTube on Uber Lather.. Its a little work but its the best thing since sliced bread.. Also if you look at it from a wallet standpoint it will be WAY less than anything from a can.. You can get a Puck of Col. Conk shaving soap for $4. Try it out and you will love it!!

You just want to get your face and shoulders rubbed by a strange Middle Eastern man.
