http://veryevolved.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/nostalgic_supper.jpg

Ahh the good old days. The music, the sights, the sounds of a place that we can never journey back to. But why do these memories of times past feel so nostalgic? What makes these memories so different from remembering what I had for breakfast last Tuesday? (http://veryevolved.com/2009/02/neuroscience-and-nostalgia/)

Put on the rose colored glasses and get ready to take a trip through our brain, as we examine the science of nostalgia.

Every so often we discuss Hollywood remakes and 9 times out of 10 the standard reply is "Hollywood sucks!" It's just happened recently with Robocop, Total Recall and just yesterday I read "The Neverending Story" is next.

F'n Hollywood I love FALKOR AND ATREYU AND ARTEX NOOOOOO!!!!!

But wait... why should it matter? Who cares? Or rather, why do I care?

It's the thing called nostalgia. Fond memories. It produces good feelings, right? It's a drug. A good drug. But it's all in your head. The study makes a great point:

Our brain isn’t the hard drive of a computer, and our memories aren’t hard coded and unchangeable. Every time you recall a memory it may become subtly altered and associated with what ever it was that triggered that old memory. If this trigger happens repeatedly, then you’re adding new layer of interpretation that will be recalled automatically with the old memory next time it’s called up.

A great example of this in action that also demonstrates fluid nostalgia, is the backlash against George Lucas. A large portion of 70’s and 80’s children had grown up owning Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader figures and playing in the backyard pretending sticks were light sabers. Fond childhood memories.

When the first abysmal Star Wars Prequel was released the strong feelings against the film weren’t just those of disappointment at a bad movie. If it were that simple, we should also feel the same way about Police Academy 7.

The reaction can be partly explained by the sense of attack on our previously fond feelings. Watching the new movie automatically calls up memories from the previous series and all the pleasant childhood playtime memories associated with it. But recalling these fond memories in the context of a negative experience begins the process of re-coding, or modifying our old memories. This is an undesirable outcome for nostalgia as it is usually such a pleasant feeling. Naturally there is some resistance and cognitive dissonance when this happens and the brain will try to avoid it like any other unpleasant experience.

That our brain actually allows this process of modifying old memories can actually be a good thing when it’s used in techniques like aversion therapy to overcome phobias.

So no more complaining about remakes, reboots or a live action Smurf movie.

It doesn't matter.

Because at the Oscars a couple years back, he presented best director to Marty, along with Spielberg and Coppola. Lucas had the balls to reference him never winning best director, as if he's ever done anything to deserve it.

Last year I bought the original Star Wars DVD. It's still a good movie and it holds your attention. I can't say that about other movies of his, past or present.

As to Howard the Duck, it's on Hulu.com, you should watch it. It's not a bad movie. They over-did the special effects, which ran the budget up to a ridiculous amount (for the time) which led to negative press. But it was worth the hour and 45 minutes, or so, of my time.

Remakes are a large part of the reason I stopped going to the movies.

There is a part of me that gets irked when someone takes a fond memory from my childhood and rapes it for money. But overall it's just lazy and I'm not willing to part with my hard earned money for some unimaginative assfuck's remake of a movie that was already done right.

Think up new ideas, faggot. The guy you want to remake had to, now you have to.

I hate GL for the reason I'm SUPPOSED to hate GL:
He's a horrible movie maker.

I don't hate him personally. I don't read articles or interviews with him. I don't know what he stands for (politically). I have no personal connection to the guy.
All I know is, he got lucky with A NEW HOPE.

He's had many many chances to create movies that COULD'VE satistfied a billion fans, and instead he gave us steaming piles of prequel poo.
I don't know one person that didn't sink into their chair during those frist 5 minutes of PHANTOM MENACE and know in their heart, "uh oh. this is gonna suck."

Having said all that, I still dream -every day- of having an actual lightsaber.

He's only direct 6 full length films and 4 of them were Star Wars and only one of them was a good one. The last non Star Wars thing he made was before I was born (American Graffiti) which was a good movie. I am talking about directing, not writing or producing.

He's working on Star Wars in 3-D.

Gary Kurtz, producer/second unit director of Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back, talking about Lucas and his well known obsession with merchandising (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2010/08/star-wars-producer-opens-up-about-how-george-lucas-ruined-everything)...

“I could see where (http://widget.uproxx.com/b/3/http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2010/08/star-wars-was-born-a-long-time-ago-but-not-all-that-far-far-away-in-1972-filmmakers-george-lucas-and-gary-kurtz-wer.html) things were headed,” Kurtz said. “The toy (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2010/08/star-wars-producer-opens-up-about-how-george-lucas-ruined-everything#) business began to drive the [Lucasfilm] empire. It’s a shame. They make three times as much on toys as they do on films. It’s natural to make decisions that protect the toy business, but that’s not the best thing for making quality films.”
For Kurtz, the popular notion that “Star Wars” was always planned as a multi-film epic is laughable. He says that he and Lucas, both <nobr style="color: rgb(43, 101, 176); font-weight: normal; font-size: 100%; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Sans-serif;" id="itxt_nobr_8_0">USChttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif</nobr> (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2010/08/star-wars-producer-opens-up-about-how-george-lucas-ruined-everything#) film school grads who met through mutual friend Francis Ford Coppola in the late 1960s, first sought to do a simple adaptation of “Flash Gordon,” the comic-strip hero who had been featured in movie serials that both filmmakers found charming.
“We tried to buy the rights to ‘Flash Gordon’ from King Features but the deal would have been prohibitive,” Kurtz said. “They wanted too much money, too much control, so starting over and creating from scratch was the answer.”
“Star Wars” opened with a title sequence that announced it as “Episode IV” as a winking nod to the old serials, not a film franchise underway, Kurtz said.
“We had an outline and George changed everything in it,” Kurtz said. “Instead of bittersweet and poignant he wanted a euphoric ending with everybody happy. The original idea was that they would recover [the kidnapped] Han Solo in the early part of the story and that he would then die in the middle part of the film in a raid on an Imperial base. George then decided he didn’t want any of the principals killed. By that time there were really big toy sales and that was a reason.”
The discussed ending of the film that Kurtz favored presented the rebel forces in tatters, Leia grappling with her new duties as queen and Luke walking off alone “like Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns,” as Kurtz put it.
Kurtz said that ending would have been a more emotionally nuanced finale to an epic adventure than the forest celebration of the Ewoks that essentially ended the trilogy with a teddy bear luau.
He was especially disdainful of the Lucas idea of a second Death Star, which he felt would be too derivative of the 1977 film. “So we agreed that I should probably leave.”

Im still annoyed with Lucas but I rally hate these die fans who show up to everything and buy everything.

Case in point, there was the annual Star Wars celebration thing this weekend, I know because a Facebook friend put up constant updates, but what really annoyed me was they announced the blue ray release of the movies and showed a deleted scene never before shown and people in the audience went bonkers seeing clapping and hooting an hollering.

FUCK YOU, Lucas is just taking your money for the umpteth time with this shit. I would bet my life the last time the DVD was released of these movies a discussion was had on what not to include so that a future set would have more extras

Looks like Lucas is fucking with the movies again with the upcoming BluRay release

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! (http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/08/confirmed_george_lucas_ed_with_the_original_trilog .php)

If your response to this is a big, hearty "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" then you and Darth Vader have something in common:
<IFRAME height=390 src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/eGaSxSuB2vY" frameBorder=0 width=640 allowfullscreen=""></IFRAME>
Because that's what he's yelling now when he pitches the Emperor down the shaft. I'm afraid this is no joke -- several people/sites have gotten their review copies of the Star Wars Blu-rays in, and they're all saying the same thing. Oh, plus:

• CG Yoda is definitely in The Phantom Menace now, whether that footage I previously ran was old or not
• Obi-Wan's dragon call that scares off the Sand People is fucking insane
• R2-D2's rock covering on Tatooine is now physically impossible for him to get into
• Jabba's palace door is now ridiculously large
• EWOKS BLINK

If you can ignore how creepy that last change is -- and man, I expect it to be really fucking creepy -- and focus on the issues at hand, it's worth noting that Lucasfilm has not denied any of these changes, since they popped up on the interwebs last evening, so... yep. All true.

Can I get real for a minute? I think most people would agree this is a pretty terrible addition to make. Darth Vader's wordless betrayal of the Emperor has always been one of the original trilogy's most powerful moments, because you genuinely don't know what Vader's going to do, and you have to envision the turmoil going on underneath that mask -- which is so much more effective than him reliving his goofy "NOOOOOOOOOOO" yell from the end of Revenge of the Sith. This is a change, like so many of these Star Wars alterations have been, that has genuinely lessened the movies. They have made them worse.

Seriously, I really think that is the reason. I can come to no other conclusion.

I'd say 90% of the casual movie-goers who saw EP3 probably had no opinion on the "Noooooooooo!!!" one way or another. To include it in the Blu-Ray of EP6 would achieve nothing. Why even bother going through the trouble.

However, the 10% of the "fanboys" had nothing but disdain for the "Noooooooooo!!!!" and flooded the intrerwebs with vitriol for it and for Lucas over doing it. To now add it to EP6, after the fact, is for no other reason than to slap those fanboys in the face. What other possible reason could there be? And, I think that's why he does most of this shit.

Adding the "NOOooo!" to that scene is not only not necessary.... it actually undermines the plot. When Vader turned back to good, and decided to slay The Emperor, it took The Emperor by surprise. Having Vader say "NO!" two times is a serious tip off to Palpatine that Vader is having a change of heart.
There is simply no reason to ruin a complete scene where all the characters actions are justified. NOW... the scene is actually worse.

Speilberg did this when he "fixed" ET.
In the original, the kids are running for their lives away from the authorities who are carrying guns. In the special edition, Speilberg replaced the guns with flashlights. This completely changes the dire & dangerous tone of the chase.

Fuckin' directors are batshit.

This.

Lucas hasn't cared about the quality of a project in thirty years. As soon as he learned the word "merchandising" it was all over. That's why you have Ewoks in Episode 6.

When they were making the last Indiana Jones movie, didn't Lucas say something to Spielberg like "it doesn't matter if the story is garbage. They're still going to come see it."?

Vader saying "no" wasn't added to improve the film. It was added to change the film. So that a controversy started that would generate a buzz and so that a new Star Wars product was released that collectors HAD to have.

Fuck the legacy. Fuck integrity. Lucas isn't an artist and hasn't been for quite some time. He's a business man and his focus is on moving product.

Here's most of the changes discussed here.

1. Greedo shoots first again.
2. R2D2 is impossibly hidden in the rocks.
3. Obi Wan's over the top crazy dragon scream.
4. Blinking Ewoks
5. Vader's Nooooooooooooooo.

George C. Scott does not approve.

Steven Spielberg defends George Lucas over Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - kind of. (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=32315)

I'm very happy with the movie. I always have been... I sympathise with people who didn't like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin. George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn't want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in - even if I don't believe in it - I'm going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it. I'll add my own touches, I'll bring my own cast in, I'll shoot the way I want to shoot it, but I will always defer to George as the storyteller of the Indy series. I will never fight him on that.

Also, Spielberg takes full responsibilty for the single stupidest scene in the history of cinema, and he seems really proud of it too:

What people really jumped at was Indy climbing into a refrigerator and getting blown into the sky by an atom-bomb blast. Blame me. Don't blame George. That was my silly idea. People stopped saying "jump the shark". They now say, "nuked the fridge". I'm proud of that. I'm glad I was able to bring that into popular culture."

Obi-Wan is from Jon Stewart (http://www.toplessrobot.com/2011/12/men_are_from_mars_obi-wan_is_from_jon_stewart.php)

http://www.toplessrobot.com/kenobicard1.jpg

Not that I would ever accuse George Lucas of making up Star Wars details as he goes along but...OK, I would accuse him of that. But every now and then such on-the-fly backstory leads to some amazing bit of trivia, like the fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi's homeworld, Stewjon, is named after Daily Show host Jon Stewart.

This apparently stretches back to Celebration V, a Star Wars convention where Stewart interviewed Lucas and asked about Obi-Wan's home planet. Lucas jokingly replied that it was called "Stewjon," but the joke didn't end there. Stewjon is apparently now part of official Star Wars canon, to the point where it's listed on Obi-Wan's Clone Wars trading card. Some other Star Wars sources still describe Obi-Wan as a Coruscant native, so you can go on believing that if you like. But I'll stick with the Jon Stewart version.

This leads us to one important lesson: if you become famous for incisive news-comedy and ask George Lucas enough questions, you might get a fictional planet named in your honor. And they say journalism's a useless major.

Hey kids! Here's a totally real trailer by the Star Wars people aimed at kids who were too young to see the Phantom Menace when it originally came out in theaters.

As you can tell by the announcer's attitude the movie is "edgy" and "in your face". You've heard the expression "let's get busy"? Well this is a movie that gets "biz-zay" consistently and thoroughly. It's proactive. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.

As was pointed out on another site, when the announcer says "Hurry up Qui-Gon! You don't don't want to be late for the celebration." Qui-Gon was already dead, and his body was burned up, by that point in the movie.

Hey, kids! Funeral Pyres are just like big campfires. Don't forget your Marshmallows and S'mores!

If they ever rebooted the SW franchise (sequel, reboot, remake, prequel....)
I'd want it to be MORE gritty and LESS "spacey". I know it's trendy to make everything more dark and serious these days, but... with Star Wars... it could actually WORK. I don't really need a "dark" Spiderman. But with SW, there's potential there for a serious movie to poke it's head out from all the day glow blue balls of energy, and green lawns and rolling hills, and shiny buildings, and flowing robes, and mirrored spaceships, and proper English speech and manners.... etc etc.
They've made 6 movies... and 4 of them have been basically kid's films. Make another one that is for adults. Give it an R rating! Make a real fuckin' movie.

Now George is saying Greedo always shot first.

The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn't. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.

Stephen Whitty at The Star-Ledger must be reading this thread. Here's his review of The Phantom Menace 3D:

http://www.nj.com/entertainment/movies/index.ssf/2012/02/the_phantom_menace_3d_meesa_no_like_big_doo_doo_ye s.html

Lucas has, at times, been a great filmmaker, and a technical visionary, but I think he missed his true calling as a cook in a cheap restaurant. Nothing is ever wasted; everything is constantly re-sold.

The best part about the whole George Lucas/Star Wars thing is that the fans are continuing to reward him for making crap. The advantage he has over his fans is that he can make a crapload of money making the mediocre material and then when he senses his goodwill is fading to the point of affecting the money... he will make "The Real Prequels" and public apologize to the fans, and when those prequels are released, they will suck too. And the fans will swear to god that they are good until a YouTuber makes another two-hour movie review about them.
