I'm probably looking more forward to this movie more than any other this spring. It's from the director of Superbad, Greg Mottola. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, who is awesome, and Kristen Stewart, who is hot, Ryan Reynolds and the unbelievably great Martin Starr. It comes out March 27th.
It's the summer of 1987 and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), a recent college graduate, is looking for a job. After initial attempts to find employment prove unsuccessful, he eventually finds work at a local amusement park and learns it's the perfect course to prepare him for the real world.
I'm in. I think it looks like a cross between Superbad and Wet Hot American Summer. I anticipate it greatly.
Here is the trailer:
<object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8gc0NaO5lpA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8gc0NaO5lpA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object>
And here is the red band trailer. Ewwwwww cursing!!!!!!!!
<embed src="http://www.buzzcuts.com/player/player.swf" width="400" height="320" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="config=http://www.buzzcuts.com/getVideo/7076" /><img style="visibility:hidden;width:0px;height:0px;" border=0 width=0 height=0 src="http://counters.gigya.com/wildfire/CIMP/Jmx*PTEyMDY2ODA*ODEyMzcmcHQ9MTIwNjY4MDU1Mjc1MyZwPT E4NzYzMiZkPSZuPQ==.jpg" /><img style="visibility:hidden;width:0px;height:0px;" border=0 width=0 height=0 src="http://counters.gigya.com/wildfire/IMP/CXNID=2000002.0NXC/bT*xJmx*PTEyMzU3MTc*MzEzOTImcHQ9MTIzNTcxNzQzNzY4OS ZwPTE4OTAyMSZkPSZnPTImdD*mbz*4NDI2ZWQzMmQyYmQ*ZTE* YWQ1NjkyOGExM2RmMThjZA==.gif" />

They pushed the release back a week. I assume it's because 'I Love You, Man' opens on the 20th and they wanted enough time for the market to see it and have enough time to see this. I was surprised they were opening on consecutive weekends when I saw it, makes sense.
Michael Phillips, who I think is a pretty good critic, gave it a glowing review. Called it the best of the year so far, which is saying nothing.
It doesn't open until April 3, and it's unlikely to be a commercial wow. But Greg Mottola's wonderful coming-of-age romance "Adventureland" gave me more pleasure (along with some serious pangs of post-adolescent nerd recognition) than anything I've seen so far in 2009. Watch for it.
Adventureland Mottola wrote and directed "The Daytrippers" and more recently directed "Superbad." His new film, set in a 1987 Pittsburgh summer suffused in alcohol, marijuana and yearning, stars Jesse Eisenberg of "The Squid and the Whale." Like Michael Cera, he's a Zen master in the art of naturalistic self-effacement; Kristen Stewart is just as good (she was the desert flower in "Into the Wild") as his co-worker at a tumble-down amusement park, where employees pass the time practicing socially maladroit small talk and angsting, often hilariously, about their futures.
It's very low-keyed, and despite the supporting presence of Bill Hader, "Adventureland" lacks the sketch-comedy punch of most contemporary American screen comedy. It doesn't need it. Instead, Mottola and his ensemble succeed on honesty, wit, warmth and a leading actor whose timing is like a Swiss watch with a screw loose.

Opens Friday and I'll be there. I really think it will be funny.
Another excerpt from a review:
I don't know where I thought Mottola was headed after THE DAYTRIPPERS, but I am 100% certain I didn't have him doing for the '80s what AMERICAN GRAFFITI and DAZED AND CONFUSED did, respectively, for the '60s and '70s. There's a danger in overselling a movie as low-key and sincere as ADVENTURELAND, but I'm willing to stand by those comparisons; I watched the film with the least responsive audience imaginable (i.e. junketeers), and still walked out the screening room buzzing. Most importantly, while it evokes its era palpably, it hits on so many basic, universal truths that one needn't have lived through the '80s to connect to the hopes and fears and grave disappointments of its characters.
I hear the music is awesome too.

Me and the mister won Adventureland t-shirts and soundtracks at an 80's trivia night, I got the Games Games Games tee-
The soundtrack listing is:
Lou Reed: Satellite of Love (should go at the END!)
David Bowie: Let's Dance
Big Star: I'm In Love With A Girl
The Cure: Just Like Heaven (eh)
Falco: Rock Me Amadeus
INXS: Don't Change
Outfield: Your Love
Crowded House: Don't Dream It's Over
New York Dolls: Looking for a Kiss
Husker Du: Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely
The Replacements: Unsatisfied
The Velvet Underground: Pale Blue Eyes
Yo La Tengo: Farewell Adventureland
Adventureland Theme
So, based on that, a guy pines for a girl who's attached, and he raps in German.

I just can't bring myself to do it. Probably not even on cable. I tried once to watch Superbad and to paraphrase Ronnie B, "It was so bad that I walked out on it. Just got up off my couch and went out into the yard for a while" Intolerable dreck, as I remember it.
But that's just me.

I am reposting this from a FB comment to hammersavage.
I didn't focus on hating her(St but i definitely thought that they really couldn't work out that "chemistry" between her and James. I really really felt that this was more of a high school vibe than people who were supposedly in/graduated from college. (aside from looks wise, attitude and stuff)
The parts i can remember laughing at the hardest (i cackled 3 times but it's ok because there was only 1 other person in the theater aside from us) was the pirate banana, "yet he still retains his shapka(i think)" and Frigo pissing on the window.
Loved loved the music, goes without saying and i would say it's rewatchable but it was definitely like Nick & Nora "cute" and less Dazed & Confused coming of age.

See I felt it was way more Dazed than Nick and Norah. That's actually the movie I thought of as I left the theater. The way James changed over the summer was very coming of age but not heavyhanded. I felt like these were mature people but it did kinda feel like high school because it was the summer between school so I get that aspect.
I appreciated that the humor didn't try and shock me. Any other movie, Frigo would have been in every scene trying to Stiffler it up. He had his moments but it was the little things. The banana thing, the 'James is it? Am I pronouncing that right?' line. Just actual dialogue in actual situations. Again, not overly funny but they had a story to compensate for it.
I thought Jesse Eisenberg was great but I'm a fan of his. She wasn't great but didn't take away from anything for me. I'd totally pick Lisa P. over her.
And the music was just fabulous. The Replacements, Bowie, Lou Reed, The Cure, Big Star, Violent Femmes. Just tremendous and music that made sense with the characters and in the scene and in the time. You can tell that this music really meant something to Mottolla at that time in his life. Some standard 80's that was played off of and had a meaning. Really impressive useage of music.
And 'Satellite of Love' gets major play. Very pivotal in the film.
So a big thumbs up for me. Probably my favorite of the year so far although that's not saying much. Not overly funny but pretty honest and real and again, the music is worth it alone.

I didn't really "feel" for James or Em, her bad acting threw a lot off in the beginning. This movie wasn't consistently funny, that's not saying it has to be overly humorous or inyourface but there were A LOT of lulls in the movie. That made it vastly different from D&C.
I didn't see a huge character development from anyone, i dont know if that's because i wasn't invested in any of them (maybe Joel) or because it was just so typical of what was going to happen (You cannot argue that their relationship was totally in sync with N&N).
I am also so tired of Ryan Reynolds, he just needs to beat it. I also didn't get how they didn't bring any sense of closure to the driving incident the day after with the dad because it really felt like they were going to go somewhere with that and completely dropped the ball.

I'll give you she wasn't great but I didn't feel any lulls. I don't think the first time I saw Dazed I laugh nearly as much as I do now. My familiarity with the characters over time made that movie funnier and funnier. I'm not saying this movie will be as much of that for me but I think it's that type.

I thought James changed a ton. His family let him down and he had this fucked up summer and he was a different person at the end of it. I would have liked more from Joel and her homelife actually.

I was never a huge RR fan. I liked how he was not a total dick but not really a good guy in this movie. The dad thing was inexcusable. They show his face in recognition of the bottle and never really resolve that. I mean I guess he never copped to it and that led to James wanting to leave more but I would have liked to have seen that. Right you are Ninny.

I mean i guess if he did own up to it that it would have changed the ending entirely because James would have had the money to you know but still, how dick is that? I like to believe that even in a messed up family that shit like that wouldnt prevent what it ultimately did.
Would it really have ruined the ending though? I guess it would have made it anti-climactic (no pun intended) but it wouldn't have destroyed it.

I enjoyed this mostly for the affectionate nostaliga and the continual Lou Reed motif. The fact that it was largely character-driven probably means it will pay at the box office. Even though I'd be deprived of the ability of transmitting these current thoughts, I wish I could go back to the time when the movie was set. I'd rather play ski-ball at a crappy carnival instead of playing text-tag all night.
Ryan Reynolds I thought was a pleasant surprise in a nuanced turn as a serial philanderer. The only cast member who really went for broad humor was the guy who kept sucker-punching Jesse Eisenberg in the crotch. Kristen Stewart is really beautiful but after this and Twilight I'm beginning to suspect she may never amount to much.
