'Total Recall' ready for revival (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i205e36d6d97550537a3dcb5babb90fda)

"Total Recall" is totally coming back.

Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films banner are in final negotiations to develop and produce for Columbia a contemporary version of "Total Recall," the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven.

The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.

The movie explores one of Dick's favorite topics, reality vs. delusion, as audiences never knew whether or not the story was a dream. Either way, the movie grossed a very real $261 million worldwide.

Carolco was behind the original movie, which was distributed by TriStar. Dimension picked up the rights for a reported $3.15 million with the aim of developing a sequel. Columbia secured the rights from Miramax, which retained them when Harvey and Bob Weinstein left to start their own company.

Calling Dick's story "prescient," Moritz said he hoped the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects can help tell the "Recall" story in a fresh way.

Toby Jaffe is overseeing on behalf of Original Film. Matt Tolmach and Sam Dickerman oversee for Columbia.

These reimaginings are getting motherfucking ridiculous. There's nothing you can do to improve the original TR.

I was just thinking, what remake has the least years between the original and the remake? I was thinking Batman, but that was 1989, Total Recall was 1990, so 19 years between the two if TR comes out in 2009.. Batman is technically the winner so far.

edit: Batman begins, I kept thinking Dark Knight. So 16 years

Why doesn't Hollywood take a full year and just do NOTHING but remakes from 20 years ago. Maybe that will get it out of their systems, but I doubt it.

Have any of you seen Total Recall recently?

Cheesy. I don't think it holds up at all.

I'm not saying it needs a remake, but it's not like it would be raping your childhood.

I agree. In fact, I'm wondering if this is less of a remake of Total Recall and more of another adaptation of "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale."

But the way they talk about developments in FX makes me think it may even be less like the original Dick story than TR.

I don't know if TR doesn't "hold up" as much as its just a product of the Arnold genre of 80's-early 90's moviemakeing.

On a side note, did anyone see that TR TV series that was out for a little bit?

I actually remember seeing a young Sharon Stone for the very first time in Total Recall. She had a bit part and I seriously recall thinking "this actress is gonna be huge".

For the record.... I think the next time I said that was when I saw Hilary Duff. I guess I'm kinda hit or miss in this department.

Arnold wasn't horrible in that movie, but the kid was a complete douchebag. Talk about miscasting. I wanted him to die throughout the entire flick.

IMO, if the child lead were likable and NOT annoying, the movie would have been 100% better.

When they had a commercial division I did a few jobs there.

From my experience, they wouldn't understand the irony, just the paycheck.

By the way...he's doing a new 21 jump street as well.

I don't think you can count Comic Book movies, they are adapted from comics. Was Tim Burton's Batman a remake of the 1960's Adam West Batman movie based on the Adam West Batman TV show based on the comic? They just keep restarting the franchise. I think they are going to do that with Superman, just start from scratch and forget about the Bryan Singer Superman movie. WB thought it was too gay.

I don't know if I said this in the another thread but I got to ask the great Ray Wise how he felt about the new Robo remake being PG-13. Also that didn't he feel that there had to be an R level of violence to tell that story the way it should be. Let's just say the great Ray Wise was not very pleased, AT ALL!

Exactly.

The effects are awwwwful. That alone would warrant a remake... in my mind I think of the movie as one of my favorite more reality based sci fi movies but upon rewatching it a few years ago.. the suffocation scene at the end is embarrassing.

But Arnie, Devito, Stone - that scene with the psychologist. There were so many great performances and such great mind fucking going on in the thing and it was all pretty believeable stuff. This is the stuff that I dont' think they can pull off again. Who they cast and how it's done is going to have a huge part in whether the remake is kickass or just a paycheck for all involved.

It depends on who they want to tap for their money. If it's targeted to highschoolers and looks like Starship Troopers - it's going to blow hard.

On the flip side, not all remakes are bad, look at the new Battlestar Galactica.

Also I feel the way about making Watchmen into a movie as folks do about remaking Total Recall, it was perfect the way it was so why feel the need to remake or adapt it.

Patrick Totopolous is the lead designer on the Total Recall re-make. I only know this because I'm a fan of the Face/Off show where he appears as a judge. He's done the first two Underworld movies, I am Legend, Stargate, the Cave, Pitch Black. If anything, the creatures and aliens and such should look pretty cool. Apparently Ethan Hawke is in this thing too.
